Alene Smith's Architectural Portfolio

Page 1

INTRODUCTION

This portfolio illustrates works done by Alene Smith during the past 5 years. I am a Jamaican who is pursuing my Masters in Architecture at the Dessau Institute of Architecture at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany and currently on a six months exchange program at the California Polytechnic State University(Cal Poly). I am the holder of a Bachelors in Architectural Studies. My years in the field of architecture has allowed me to embark on various diverse projects. Each project in this portfolio has a different design approach and consideration. The settings of these projects span countries in Europe, South America and the Caribbean.

The design development for each project focused on the climatic conditions and how these work together with material choice, placement of spaces, orientation of the building, structure, foundation type and the tectonics in the design. The tropical climate of the Caribbean posed challenges associated with the effects of having direct sunshine all year round. The knowledge that the effect of the sun on the each cardinal side of the building creates the need for shading devices, required creative sustainable design options. Additionally the effects from natural disasters such as hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, landslides, floods and torrential rains all create an awareness in the designing of buildings in the Caribbean. On the other hand The projects located in Europe emphasised the history of the surrounding sites, as well as climate. The climate being basically the opposite of the Caribbean required that the building be kept warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Analyses was done on each area, their history, background, people, culture, climate, surroundings and various aspects of the sites themselves to create designs which suited the needs of the client.

The contents of this portfolio show how best I created designs with all the above considerations of the macro context and climate as well of those of the micro context and climate, including each site and their immediate context coupled with other design considerations for each project.

I believe the experiences gained from designing a variety of projects in various countries and climatic regions has been beneficial to my architecture experience. I am confident that this experience has set me in good stead to be an asset to your company.
