MASSING
COURTYARDS
CIRCULATION
This facility has been designed to provide refuge to the Orange County community and to create spaces where both employees and clients feel comfortable and safe. The project, located in Irvine, California address the needs of the community by creating a holistic environment to serve the different stages of behavioral health. The project is comprised of two main masses, one for the county health clinic and the outpatient departments such as wellness center, crisis stabilization unit and substance use disorder and the second for the residential units. These two main areas are separated by outdoor courtyards while a central circulation spine keeps them connected. The main entrance to the facility, is a high glass wall that has been set back into the building. This glass wall helps blur the indoor and outdoor separation and creates an open and spacious lobby. The openness of the space and the lack of visual obstructions is further emphasized by the garden that is located on the opposite side. The front setback furthermore provides a safe waiting area for both the federal health clinic and the wellness center. While the outpatient departments are transparent, the residential facility emphasizes on the safety and the security of the residents and the staff. The residential facility has been designed to create an interface between the shelter created within the interior of the building and the mental, emotional, and physical nurturing aspects that the outdoor spaces, like fresh air, sunlight and vegetation provide. Each division of the residential units have their own courtyard and garden spaces. All the bedrooms in the residential facilities are located on the outer perimeter of the building while the public spaces such as dining rooms, living rooms and activity rooms are on the inside, facing the garden. In conclusion the design, while satisfying the requirements of the project, takes into consideration the natural innate sensibilities that every human needs and creates environment that fosters healing and wellbeing.

Great Park Aquatic Center Topic Studio: Sport Architecture Spring 2021 | Instructor: Marc Shulitz Group: Jun Dinh, Natalie Simba, Roman Huante Location: Irvine, Ca. The facility was designed based on two key ideas: The first is a plan organization where a central bar of program provides back of house necessities for the public, athletes, administrators, and recreational visitors. The second key idea is to create an exceptional experience for the visitors as they walk toward the building. Along this elevated promenade, visitors can catch a glimpse of aquatic activities below such as recreational swimming and deep-water solo climbing. The roof of the Sports City Aquatics Center is designed to respond to the programs within. It does so through the utilization of a space frame which provides the ability to create an undulating surface that responds to height requirements and hierarchy of the program.

Small Lot Subdivision Spring 2020 | Instructor: Roberto Sheinberg Location: Los Angeles, Ca. Small Lot Subdivision The project has been designed to adapt to the neigborhood while its trailblazing elements stand out. Each unit incorporated components of the neighboring houses. These elements vary from partial sloped roof to the exterior horizontal rain-screen system. Additionally the project showcases different strategies to acknowledge and reduce the environmental impacts. The sloped roof, while it helps the design to fit in, also provides a suitable surface for solar panels. Each building is also equiped with rain-water collection system for irrigation use. The green roof further helps reduce the carbon foorprint. While privacy is an important aspect of the project, a sense of community is also an integral part of the design. there are three main public spaces allocated for different uses: a large space dedicated to kids’ play area, a second space for gatherings and bar-b-ques and a third spaces for pets.

House for Mechanical Engineer Spring 2018 | Instructor: Paul Chiu Location: Glendale, Ca.
The house for a mechanical engineer is designed to roflect the occupation of a mechanical engineer. The design is inspired by different parts and components of a vehicle, the two main areas - public and private - take on the role of 2 different parts that are connected through a belt. The public spaces are located at the front of the house while private areas are in the back and a main central circulation connects the two. The circulation is the mechanical artery, a modular system that connects different parts of the building. A self supporting screen system has been designed on the west side of the property. This screen has been designed to slide open and close. This allows ample sunlight during the day and privacy for the residents at night.
