THE STORY OF THE TREE ‘Hortus Clausa’ emerged as the opposite of ‘Hortus Conclusus’- lat. meaning the enclosed garden with high walls mainly of monasteries and schools that were full of flowers and trees. Considering the existing school forms, with strict boundaries and limited accessibility, we wanted to reverse the condition, allowing all the inputs of the environment to invade it. The idea of a volume with transparent and permeable base around the unique tree on the land that ‘hover’ in space, allow the continuity of the landscape and creates multiple accesses, views and spatial qualities Legend 1. ...TO ARTISTIC The building is situated in Minsk on St. Francis Skarina Street, which is historically categorized as a residential neighborhood with the potential for “new IT/industrial district development” since the 1980s. However, due to its disconnection from the city and lack of attractions, the area had lost its appeal for the citizens. To address this, a project was introduced to establish an art cluster aimed at revitalizing the area.

The art cluster concept emphasizes collaboration and idea implementation. It’s divided into event space (exhibition, lecture, and recreation) and work space (coworking) by vibrant colored volumes. The project’s core idea is the interplay of volumes, colors, and materials, with each zone having its distinct primary color. The design features colored glass boxes that blend light and airiness with concrete materials and an industrial beam ceiling.

Beyond providing accommodation, the central concept of this project was to establish a dynamic, intergenerational meeting place, fostering a vibrant crossroads of culture. The architectural approach aimed to harmonize the contemporary design with the rich historical context, resulting in a structure that emphasized a well-defined hierarchy of courtyards, public gathering areas, and semi-public spaces. Notably, the facade was designed to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces by incorporating a network of loggias that interact with natural light, enhancing the overall experience. This innovative approach not only respects the heritage of the site but also promotes a sense of connection and engagement, making it a true embodiment of architectural and cultural synergy.
