INFILL HOUSE IN PRAGUE TYPE/ CLIENT/ TEAM/ LOCATION/ YEAR/ STATUS/

COMMISION PRIVATE ALEŠ JAVŮREK PRAGUE_CZECH REPUBLIC 2013 DESIGN PHASE

Our site is located in a quiet residental area in a suburb of Prague. One of the oldest row houses had been damaged over time so seriously that the former owner had to demolish it completely. The location of the site is very convenient because of a good traffic connection with the city center - both by car and public transport - and village ambience which is perfect for small kids or people who appreciate quiet weekends. Neighbouring houses, which create the street, have really similar structure which is so characteristic for Central European housing. It means small forgarden with some space for parking in front of a house, main garden situated on the opposite side, ground floor contenting mainly social spaces, first floor private spaces, loft and cellar used for storing. My clients came with many requirements which were expectable (for ex. parking space in a garage as well as in front of the house / main garden must be connected with living room, dining room, workroom and storage for outside furniture and garden equipments) but, on the other hand, some of them went against each other (for ex. one fluid space but separate private and social spaces). All this made it quite difficult and complicated challenge considering thin infill site with a local volume regulation.

To fulfill all clients' wishes it was impossible to use ordinary storeys. The solution was found thanks to Adolf Loss and his "Raumplan". My proposal does not offer levels or areas but volumes which are located according to public/private relations. The house provides fluent social space which is linked to private spaces.

CROATIAN RESIDENCE TYPE/ CLIENT/ TEAM/ LOCATION/ YEAR/ STATUS/

COMMISION PRIVATE ALEŠ JAVŮREK ORASAC_CROATIA 2013 DESIGN PHASE

CROATIAN RESIDENCE

Croatia is a mediterranean country. Most of the area is situated along the sea and with subtropic climate offers perfect place for living. That makes Croatia one of the most popular summer destination in Europe. Thousands of tourists visit this country every year. They have two main possibilities how to reach their favorite place for a vacation. People who have already booked hotel or know exact destination use highway, which was built several years ago, but great amout of visitors prefer road along the sea where they can pick up a place according to actual situation or mood. This road traces rocky coast and provides beautiful views of the sea and breathtaking mountains sceneries on the other side. That is brief but significant description of landscape where the plot is located. The site is situated several kilometers north of Orasac (close to Dubrovnik-South Croatia). Southern border of the site is created by a pavement along previously described road. The rest of the site is surrounded by a rocky landscape, especially northern border defined by the extremely steep slope. Western view of the sea is hidden as well by the rocks. The crucial point of design was to find a solution which would allow to open the house to the beautiful landscape with keeping enough privacy and protection against noise from the road. The heart of the house, which is a social space, is situated as far as possible from the road and placed on a naturaly sloping terrain. It allows to connect an interior to the nature around and provides beautiful view of the sea because traffic is almost one level lower than groundfloor. First floor (private spaces) is placed as a simple box which is open to the west and framing sea view over the rocks. First floor has an absolutely opposite logic than groundfloor which is defined only by three simple walls running out from the heart of the house.

HOUSE IN SHIROKA LAKA TYPE/ CLIENT/ TEAM/ LOCATION/ YEAR/ STATUS/

COMMISION PRIVATE ALEŠ JAVŮREK SHIROKA LAKA_BULGARIA 2013 DESIGN PHASE

Village Shiroka Laka is located in the valley of Shirokolashka River (Rhodope Mountains-South Bulgaria-Europe). It is famous for its authentic Rhodopean houses set in tiers on both banks of the local river. The old houses were designed in the characteristic architectural style of the Rhodopes. Under these circumstances I had to make a detailed research about Rhodopean architecture and Bulgarian culture itself. The roots of the Bulgarian culture and architecture were set in the times of Ottoman Empire. The origin of the word "Bulgar" is very interesting too - it means "mixed" in Turkish. They have got such name because Bulgarian citizens are in general mix of The Slavs (European) and The Turks (Asian). European way of creating an architecture consists in "dividing" space. Asian way is the opposite - it comes up with "merging" space. The Rhodopean architecture combines these both different styles. The structure of typical house is based on a square or a rectagle which is jointed with other additional spaces and create characteristic shape. Bulgarians are warm and friendly nation but their houses are extremely private. Bulgaria has serious economical problems and high criminality so there is no surprise that a building looks like a small watchtower and a site is surrounded by a wall. The Rhodopean house has two or three storeys and pyramid roof. Social spaces are located on the first floor. The most important part of the house is a kind of deck called "Chadrak". This is the place where Bulgarians spend most of their free time. The main goal of the designing process was to find a proposal which fits bulgarian lifestyle and could become natural part of local landscape and architecture. The site is situated in a village periphery on the south hillside. This place provides amazing views of the valley and a roof landscape which is created by old traditional bulgarian houses. The dimensions of the whole site are 15m x 15m (obviously size for a house). There is only one access from a road on the southern border of the site. Based on these initial conditions, the classical fence (wall) become part of the house. The square plot is divided, according to cross grid, to four atriums, where 3 of them are private. These atriums allow linking the interior with the exterior and still maintain the intimacy of individual spaces. Last atrium represents entrance and provides a parking place. The main social space is located on the upper floor. Openings are designed according to the local lighting conditions, intimacy and views of the surrounding landscape.

HOUSE FOR SENIORS TYPE/ CLIENT/ TEAM/ LOCATION/ YEAR/ STATUS/

COMPETITION KOMA MODULAR CONSTRUCTION ALEŠ JAVŮREK, KAROLINA WŁODARCZYK PRAGUE_CZECH REPUBLIC 2012 PROJECT AMONG FINALISTS

Designing area is very difficult. The site is narrow and placed on a slope between high buildings and trees. Northern border is created by a parking lot, Western by one-storey building with one of the entrances located straight to designing site. Eastern border is made by trees and private gardens. According to analyses, Senior House should be placed in a gap between two high apartment buildings. Otherwise, high buildings would spoil shadow on designing house and both buildings would cover each other’s views. Thanks to this position, it became possible to use roof of one-storey building and transform it into beautiful garden. Main entrance is located on the southern facade because of a pedestrian path leading to main street and tram stop. Access for ambulance is provided on the northern side, with the possibility to park straight under the building, next to the second entrance. On the ground floor one can find multipurpose room which also can have a function of a community center for elders who live outside the Senior House. Reception, administration and medical rooms are located on the same level. On the first floor, there are bigger flats for couples and for handicapped. Second floor has only small flats for single residents. Communication inside the building is placed on the eastern side, thanks to which it was possible to preserve entrance to neighbour building and to provide parking places for emergency and service cars. One of the main requires of the competition was to use containers as a constructional sceleton. Basic module of the building is made by container with dimensions 3x3x6,5 m. Facade is made of steel panels and glass, except of balconies, which have wooden surface. Eastern facade (communication part) is made by panels of perforated steel. Thanks to this solution, residents have both nice view to greenery in the gardens and privacy. Interior surfaces are finished with wood - warm and natural material gives friendly atmosphere, for some elders it also reminds their own home. Each flat has different leading color, which is visible especially on the corridors - this solution helps elders to find door to their flat.

The main volume of designed house is placed on the edge of one-storey existing building so its western facade has both enough sunlight and privacy.

Transform the roof of one-storey building to a terrace brings two advantages: 1) residents of Senior House have outdoor green space 2) neighours from apartment block have better view - green terrace instead of black roof Competition site’s border comes straight to one-storey building’s facade and owner has an entrance to the building from this side so it was necessary to provide an access.

COMMUNITY ENTERTAINMENT FACILITY IN SOUTH CENTER, BRNO / DANCE CENTRE TYPE/ CLIENT/ TEAM/ LOCATION/ YEAR/ STATUS/

MASTER THESIS FA VUT BRNO ALEŠ JAVŮREK BRNO_CZECH REPUBLIC 2011 COMPLETED 2011

WHY DID I CHOOSE DANCE CENTER? I chose dance center for two reasons. First reason, dance has one big advantage compared to other cultural activities. Dance is about people, relationship, passion, emotion. Others are mainly individual, it means that cultural institute can be substitute for virtual media and even is not propably the best way how to enjoy it, it is important fact. Second reason is clearly pragmatic. It is cultural institute numerosity in Brno.

COMMUNITY ENTERTAINMENT FACILITY IN SOUTH CENTER, BRNO / DANCE CENTRE ORIGIN MASTER PLAN "South Center" area between old and new railway station in Brno is the topic of my thesis. Starting point for us was one of the master plans whichone is focusing on this district. Firstly, the task was to analyze new city structure. After that, it was possible to design park and cultural building placed in neighbourhood of viaduct.

pohled nástupu do vstupní haly od bulváru

New area ”South centre” is a result of moving the railway station.

Brno has the same urban structure of historical center like Vienna => “Ringstrasse”. If origin historical center was rounded by cultural important building, no one should keep this logic.

nu pod viaduktem

Starting point for us was one of master plans, which wants to keep this idea, but unfortunately with several mistakes.

Square under mountain of St. Petr is counterbalance Moravian square. If its Moravian square entrance to cultural-social part of Ringstrasse (Theaters, House of art), Square under mountain of St. Petr is entrance to park and southern part of city.

If we strictly keep the idea of green area in front of former fortification line new city park is created. The park connects Moravian square with new square under mountain of St. Petr and relaxing waterfront belong Svratka river.

The biggest problem is 1.class road which divides Svratka waterfront and city center and also moved cultural building site to disadvantageous position.

“City without smog its motto for all of us! Using concrete with TX Active will help us a lot to be closer to this motto. Probably noone subconsciously connects concrete with any ecological benefit. A goal of our design is to give the clear message about ecological quality of this product. Higher foreknowledge will make higher demand for products from concrete with TX Active in architecture, art and construction. Concrete naturally permits to create products with feeling like a sclupture, even if they are quite small.

If we want to visually define ecology, we need a symbol which immediately evoke ecology. Ecological icon is tree. Tree is connected with creating fresh air for everyone. This simple logic defines function. Our projects is a connection between natural concrete properties and ecological icon.

Revitalization of Římského náměstí (Roman square) in Brno was the topic of competition. The main goal was to find the best scenery which could be presented during whole year. Our project creates two different spaces (market, shop=public and green courtyard=private) according to historical legacy. We propose to give this unique space back to people and reduce car traffic to minimum, just for supplying. Parking is under green courtyard with entrance from Masarykova street. New volumes infill gaps, height and roof’s shape are designed according to origin structure of building.

COMPETITION YOUNG ARCHITECT AWARD 2011 ALEŠ JAVŮREK TAMPERE / FINLAND 2011 SETTLED

TOPIC, SITE, HISTORY Tampere is the biggest inland city in Finland /210 000 inhabitants, land 520 km2, water 170 km2/. The project is located in park Hämeenpuisto in the centre of Tampere, between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Park was designed by C.L. Engel in 1830 and is kept till these days in original state. Park has perfect condition and position in the city centre surrounded by prominent residental buildings, but in spite of these facts, park is almost empty in every season.

GREEN MILE / PARK IN TAMPERE, TAMPERE IN THE PARK? LONDON

TAMPERE

ANALYSIS My analysis of parks in Tampere is deduced from park analysis of big cities all over the world. On the picture you can see the map of a city, aerial view and a photo of a park. The nature (greenery and water elements) is highlighted in green colour. The situation is almost the same everywhere, high building density and only rarely we can see bigger green areas. These areas present the parks. In the pictures it is evident that people use them, although they form only a small part of nature. This lack of green areas in the cities is the cause why people use them so frequently. The necessity to be part of the nature is a human need which has always been here and is going to be here in the future as well. Looking at the pictures of Tampere we can see almost the inverse situation. The greenery and lakes are almost everywhere and that is why parks in the town are not used. It is just a duplication of a purpose which is around the city everywhere. Tampere is a park.

THESIS I suggest to keep the nature untouched and virgin on the periphery, because it is definitely one of the greatest values that Finland has. Artificial parks in centers have to fulfil their purposes (sport, cultural, etc.). The substantial thing is to offer people something they haven´t got yet. Definitely it is not the greenery itself.

SCHOOL WORK TUT TAMPERE ALEŠ JAVŮREK VUORES / FINLAND 2010 SETTLED

Vuores located at the borderline of Tampere and Lempäälä is one of the biggest and most interesting city building projects at the 21st century in Finland. The area is situated in the southern part of the housing fair area (year 2012), between the central square of the area(“Taatanaukio”) and the central park of Vuores. Buildings around it are two-storey and the residents of this area drive through the central square. The housing fair area, “Virolainen”, will be a compact garden city for 600 citizens, where every block is connected to park or outdoor recreation ground. In zoning map 300 m2 is indicated for building floor area at the competition building lot. The site for square is situated on unusual place, because it is not in the heartbeat of town but on periphery. The situation is complicated by road crossing the square. Square should be mainly for people, not for car. Anyway, we have to do it. Push the square on the same height like sidewalk. Square will not be divided to the two small parts. Cars will have to go slowly, because they have to cross “retarder” and easily feel that is a different space not only curve. In the center I put cylinder which works like orientation, meeting point and mainly like sensitive and intuitive solution for people and drivers because the way is clear without special corridors /at night drivers will be following lights between pavement/ Square is not only place. It is a space. When do we use simple master planning rules /what is road, street, square?/ Square starts to be square when it is 3 dimensional. According to this reasons I designed basic volume of house. This volume is bigger than we need for rooms but we have to use this space for /terraces, semi-spaces/ different spaces between inside and outside. Finland is a country where there are often used glazed terraces because everywhere is awesome nature but weather is not convient and this kind of spaces allow and offer new kind of spending time. Next steps of design are visible on small illustrations at the board. The most visible is game with height. The biggest floor areas and spaces need more than classical 3 meters so I designed them according to their function. The second visible things are atriums. They helped to lead the natural light to every rooms which they nedded.

KINDERGARTEN IN MORAVANY / ATX ARCHITEKTI / COURTYARD FACADE TYPE/ CLIENT/ TEAM/ LOCATION/ YEAR/ STATUS/

COMMISION ATX ARCHITEKTI ALEŠ JAVŮREK MORAVANY / CZECH REPUBLIC 2008 COMPLETION 2008

Design of kindergarten’s facade in Moravany was one of the first tasks I got in studio ATX architekti. They gave me this task, because after spending a lot of time with designing facade, they were not still satisfied, so the best solution should be giving it to someone fresh. They told me that investor already bought that facade material and I can work only with two colors. I designed facade according to given restrictions and used natural orthogonal abstract composition.
