2nd Year MArch: Fall 2015
Students were assigned Paris as site to develop a group proposal that would address the current refugee crisis. The concept includes retrofitting an office building from the 60’s to accomodate aproximately 3000 Syrian refugees. The main public area consists of a ramped gathering space and becomes a melting pot between both the French Syrian cultures. The public areas are covered with an iconic shell structure made of ETFE and bamboo structure, for easy and fast construction. In collaboration with: David Moore, David Varner, Ivana Nikolic, Heather Potts, Alicia Rabadan, Erika Hogan, Jialu Li, Lawrence Dossche, Kaitlyn Slowikowski, RenÊ Lopez, Geoffrey Rees, Xiang Li.

The West perimeter serves as main entrance for students, while a promenade that integrates both pedestrian and bike circulation connects North Avenue and Central Park, hosting student’s artwork, semi-permanent exhibitions and a pop-up market for music festivals held in the park. Three entities and two main entrances provide flexible public access. The art gallery and studios face North, the central general classrooms are embedded in a garden, and the theatre/gym component face Central Park.

Visitors that enjoy “displayed artwork” at the art gallery are simultaneously “on display”. The floating and protruding concrete mass that contains the main art pieces, defies gravity and becomes a main structural event on the façade. The central concrete volume separates from the ground to allow view to a garden from Peachtree Street. Two structural walls, one containg service and circulation, are tied to a waffle slab system that evenly distributes weight.

THE CONCEPT generated to distribute a diverse program of 63,000 ft2 was solved by centralizing a program (the pool) and surrounding it with the rest of the programs. The parking and basketball court were placed in the south façade to take advantage of the terrain’s slope. In collaboration with Mario R. Rodas
