healthy homes in SH

The project this semester focuses on creating healthy homes in Shanghai. However, before we could begin our research, we needed to gain an understanding on what constitutes a healthy home. As a group, we created a mind map, providing an organized look at what, in our opinion, contributes to a healthy home.

stakeholders mapping

Our next approach to design a healthy home was to create a stakeholders map. Through this stage of analysis, we aimed to understand the roles, views, interests and relationships of power of the involved actors. We decided to focus on the Local Government, the Sponsors and the Real Estate Developers because we believe that they are the most influential partecipants within the stakeholders analysis. This is due to their monetary power and as a consequence, to their influence on the decision making process.

our healthy (?) homes

Instead of looking at healthy homes as designers, we decided to take a critical look at our own homes as residents. This allowed us to examine healthy homes from a new perspective, analyzing what was, or was not, healthy in our daily lives. From this analysis we found some interesting points to work on: - Multifunction spaces should be designed in order to accomodate a diverse range of activities, that shouldn’t be in contrast - The shared spaces, if well designed, are good for the community feeling - There is a general issue about the quality of life ( quality of air, quality of water, quality of natural enviroment)

our methodology After gaining an understanding about HH, we began to narrow down our focus to identify what we could improve. The next issue we faced was where should we focus our project? Through discussion, revision of our mind map and research, we concluded that we would concentrate our project on a lane community due to its tradition and community-based structure, providing a strong foundation for a HH. As designers, we need to create based on the wants and needs of the people, giving way to the next stage of our project. At this juncture in the design process, we wanted to interact directly with the people of the lane, providing a first hand experience with the life of the lane community. Questionnaires, personal interviews and general observations were utilized to produce a comprehensive list of points of interest based on the information obtained on site.

make people do

Finally a workshop was created for the people of the community. We gave them the materials and we provided the services that we thought could be interesting for them. We asked them to tell us what a HH was to them, And told them to build their own ideal healthy house. A blank shit of paper was presented to those in attendance with the intention of building a three dimensional model of the lane community.

guidelines

The three main points of interest provided by the members of the community are the following: - green space - drinkable tap water - community space Our previous ideas were confirmed and reinforced. We know that these three main guidelines are not 100% innovative, but their power stands in the fact that the partecipants were aware of the importance of the quality of their life. That is such a surprise in the chinese enviroment.

1

our vision we want to design a possible solution to the problems we discovered in the research phase our solution is a combination of what the people who attended the workshop adore and what they really would like to have keeping the lane model - and its values, traditions and atmosphere- we want to build a brand new healthy lane we want to restore the original community feeling, sharing healthy habits and making them an interaction and socialisation opportunity we want to help creating first of all little social and sustainable living habits, introducing step by step new solutions

Local Government

They build 高巷, investing their own money. Once ready, they sell 高巷 to privates or public organizations.

They finance and promote 高巷. Usually they are companies interested in sustainable/healthy projects.

It buys 高巷 to rent it and get money back. It is a strong financial investment for the society.

concept our idea is to make the old lane becomes the new lane introducing some innovations step by step using inside the lane some industrial design solutions is the first step, so solve minor problems and regaing little by little the old community feeling we designed a lane module that, repeted n times, builds a brand new lane - otherwise it’s even possible to use this module inside old lane, to make it become step by step innovative and updated

4

the old lane the old lane house is usually a building with maximum 4 floors, a terrace and the entrances are placed along the narrow between one house and the other the old lane has some problems, such as the lack of green spaces, sunlight and parking we worked on a new architectural model, with shared facilities and wide community spaces in order to build an healthy social home

The module will be a case study and more and more buildings will be built in this way. The real estate interested will become leader in the market.

This will be a reference compound, because it combines real desires and feasible solutions. They will be able to spread this model in various cities.

éŤ˜塡 will be loved. Chinese and western people will finally live together in an healthy enviroment. It makes citizens more aware about sustainable issues and it provides a multicultural experience.

future opportunities healthy green district habits * * the most interisting thing would be to build entire healthy district in town, all linked, able to create from little to big community

teaching sustainable behaviours is very hard, but for the ones living in the community it would be easier to understand their importance and they could be the first to adopt them. And then one step would have already been done.

self sufficiency * with the spread of vegetable gardens and the installation of solar panels, éŤ˜塡 could aspire to become 100% self-sufficent. With the diffusion of the model inside the city there would be, in this way, a less consumption trend.
