4 What’s Up For Kids

August 2015

Letter from the publisher Ahhh– summer and the living is easy. A few more weeks of fun in the sun and no homework, strict bedtimes or carpools. September can be like January 1st, a time to regroup, get organized and hit the ground running. It’s a time I’d get school supplies for the kids, and new calendars and colored folders for me to manage the family. This year, I’d like to suggest we get out of busy and set some boundaries. Here is what I mean… I recently read a preview copy of “How to Thrive in a World of Too Much Busy”. It was a great book that reminded me to take a step back and remember I do not always have control, nor do I necessarily always want it. It made me question “when is enough, enough.” It reminded me to set boundaries with my time and make conscious choices about where and when I will commit my time. It reminded me to schedule some time just for me– schedule unscheduled time! Author Tony Crabbe suggested asking yourself these questions whenever you are considering saying yes– first, what am I giving up by making this choice? and second, what else could I do with the same amount of time and attention? Being fully present in the moment, allows us to find joy and connect in experiences we might otherwise miss. How many times have I seen a family sitting at a restaurant, all of them with their heads down on their smartphone? I can’t tell a lie– I know our family has done the same! But I now make it a point to leave the phone in my purse and only check the email when that is the single focused task at hand. I try and really enjoy each and every moment I have with my kids, my husband or friends. It certainly makes it a much more meaningful interaction. What boundaries are you willing to set? Can you do it? Or are you just too “connected”? I challenge you to get really present and live in the moment– as we all know life can change in an instant. Until next month,

Paws Up Resort Vacation

Camping? Yes– and no! An experience like no other! Fresh mountain air. A rolling river. A butler, a cook and your own... TENT? Yes, a tent that includes a fabulous experience on a 52 square mile (that’s 37,000 acres) ranch. I recently visited The Resort at Paws Up outside of Missoula Montana. From the moment I hit baggage claim, I knew this would be an experience like no other. Bob from the bell staff greeted us to take our bags and got us settled into the car for the 35 minute drive into the mountains. With ice cold water and fresh baked cookies, we were set. Upon arrival at the ranch, we were greeted by friendly staff who checked us in and then drove us to our home for the next 2 days. While they have many accommodation options to fit all types of travelers (homes, estates and tents) we chose the luxury camping. We stayed at Pinnacle “camp site” which includes 6 luxury tents (4, 2 bedroom tents sleeping up to 4 and 2, 1 bedroom tents each with a king bed.) We were immediately greeted by our Camp Butler Jake who gave us the tour of our site. The tents include big comfortable beds, large bathrooms with heated slate flooring, a porch and many other amenities not usually found in a tent! Breakfast and dinner are served in the camp pavilion- an open building with tables, a fireplace and views of the surrounding area, literally plunked into the middle of nature. While the cook has his special for breakfast, he’ll make just about anything. Dinner was a 5 star, 4 course experience with beverages of your choice as well! For a change of scenery, there is a restaurant at the main reception area as well. Evenings are spent by the camp fire with s’mores or on the big couches in front of the roaring fire in the camp pavilion connecting with new friends.

Special dining options are available including the chuck wagon dinner. After riding out in a horse drawn wagon, we enjoyed a BBQ buffet with elk, ribs, chicken and more– plus entertainment with campfire stories and music. While I didn’t have my kids, it was clearly a family favorite! Daytime activities are plentiful. From canoeing and river rafting to sporting clays and a cattle drive, there is something for everyone. I chose the sporting clays and headed to the range with Jimmy, JT and Brendon. With little to no experience shooting a 20 gauge rifle, they had me hitting the clay birds in no time. Got little ones? No worries, there is a kids camp for the younger crowd and babysitting for the tiniest campers. This gives mom and dad some time to enjoy adventures of their liking, while the kids experience the outdoors on appropriate terms. The staff was friendly, helpful and plentiful. To get from our tent site to any of the activities, we simply pulled out our smartphone and accessed the Paws Up app. From there we could message the staff we needed a ride, confirm our activity or inquire about a special service. The Resort at Paws Up was fairly easy to get to from LA. A short flight from LAX to Seattle followed by a quick change of planes to Missoula. We left at 6am and were on property for lunch (we wanted to make the most of our time!) During certain times of the year, there is also a direct flight available. While some would refer to this as “glamping” (glamourous luxury camping), I think it does it a disservice. For those who want to truly experience the beauty of nature but are not of the “pitch your own tent” type, this is a fabulous choice. Montana is beautiful, with areas untouched by man. The soaring bald eagle in the vast blue sky, the 3 sets of mountains surrounding Paws Up, falling asleep and waking up to the rush of the BlackFoot River right outside my tent- my time at Paws Up is at the top of my favorite vacations, and I have no doubt would be your favorite as well!

Parent’s Corner A New School Year = A New Child What will the new school year hold for your child? Will this be the year your child has the perfect teacher for them? The one that will SEE your child and appreciate their attributes? Will your child blossom with new friends and new learning opportunities? I hope they experience all of the above! I’ve been thinking about the same things so, I wrote a letter to my kids that I may just decide to bring out in the future from time to time. Dear M and T, As you enjoy the last few weeks of summer, I hope the anticipation of a new school year fills you with excitement. I hope you will become even more of the amazing human beings you already are. Please know that a simple smile can be the start of a new friendship. Try to put more faith into what you have to offer than what others are willing to give you. Be willing to help someone, even when it’s not cool. Find subjects and activities you enjoy and don’t hesitate to ask for help when something or someone challenges you. This is an opportunity to re-invent yourself, not into someone else but into someone that’s a little more brave, willing to try just a bit more and ready to go with the flow when needed. You have everything it takes to be successful this year; successful in your own way. Dad and Mom are here for you to share in your joy and your sadness and when we aren’t there, use your happycalmchild tools! After all, I created them for you. Please consider writing your own letter to your children. Share your hopes with them. Hopes and dreams for a young soul finding their place in this world. They need to hear how much faith you have in them and that you trust they will find their way. Michele Pullo created happycalmchild out of the needs of her own family and friends to have simple, tangible tools to help our children self-regulate their emotions, focus and ease anxiety. She works with both children and their parents through live and virtual classes, talks, webinars, family workshops and a private family program. She’s combined evidence based stress reduction tools with effective parenting techniques to give parents the support they need. Her experience as the mother of a 9yr old with ADD and a spirited 4yr old keeps her in the trenches with you! Michele’s background working with children, teaching Yoga and Dance along with 25 years of study on Stress Reduction Techniques, Movement for Learning and the Mind/ Body Connection helped her create a structured, easy to follow, fun curriculum that gives kids the tools they need while giving parents the results and support they’ve been looking for!

The Organized Family When 5 Minutes Counts! Question: What could I possibly accomplish in a mere five minutes? Answer: More than you think.

Here are some tips to get you moving toward an uncluttered home. 1. Move old newspapers to the recycle bin. If you have not read them in two days, the news is old. The newspaper can always be read (later) online. If it was that important you would have already heard or seen it on the TV news or radio... 2. Sort laundry in baskets so anyone can “do a load”. Use laundry baskets to sort whites, colors and dark items- avoiding piles on the floor and in the way. Toss in a load when you can. 3. Load dishes in the dishwasher. As you prepare a meal, run water over the cookware and the soiled dishes in the sink. Loading the dishwasher and cleaning the pots will be so much easier. No dishwasher? Soak them anyway for easier washing later. 4. De-clutter the kitchen junk drawer. Be brutal! Most of the things residing there are useless anyway. Items to keep might include: scissors, stapler, paper clips, food packaging labels, adhesive tape, a few bag twist ties (I said a few!), sticky notes, writing pens and a ruler and/or measuring tape. Toss or recycle the rest.

18 What’s Up For Kids

August 2015

5. Sort mail. Discard/recycle store ads if you know you will not need them. You can always check online for their sales. Only save the grocery ad from the store you frequent. With high gas prices, you cannot afford to drive around town to save a dollar. 6. Purge store coupons. Coupons accumulate and become useless clutter. Only keep the ones you know you will use. Use a pen to circle the expiration dates. Keep them handy near the grocery list or in the car. More will be in the mail next week. 7. Water household plants. Keep the watering can and fertilizer handy for quick use. Save time by using a soil meter to indicate which need watering. 8. Take out the trash. Grab the largest trash container and walk thru the house emptying the smaller wastebaskets into it. Keep a supply of trash bags in the bottom of each trash can/ recycle container for easy access to replace a full or soiled bag. 9. Remove trash from the car. Turn an empty tissue box into a trash bag container. It will hold 6-8 plastic grocery bags, making it easy to clear trash/clutter from your car every 2-3 days. 10. Pay two or more bills. Pay online when you can. Otherwise keep your bill paying supplies handy; bills, receipt folder, pens, postage stamps and stapler. NOTE: Set a timer to stay focused. Quit when the bell rings. Do five more minutes if time allows. Bit by bit you can do it!!

Book Review

Boys Camp from Skyhorse Publishing

Two great summer reads for kids ages 7-11 from Skyhorse Publishing! Boys Camp: Zack’s Story and Boys Camp: Nate’s Story. Fun, learning, and friendship bloom at Camp Wolf Trail in these stories of growing up in the summer sun. In Boy’s Camp: Zach’s Story, by Cameron Dokey and illustrated by Craig Orback, being at Camp Wolf Trail is a dream come true for city boy Zack. Finally, he’ll have the summer of fun he’s always dreamed of. But nature has surprises in store for Zack. Animals, weather, and even the earth itself don’t behave the way he expects, and especially not the way his favorite book, The Outdoor Adventure Guide, has described. When catastrophe strikes, will Zack have the courage and problem solving smarts to lead his friends to safety? In Boys Camp: Nate’s Story, by Kitson Jazynka and illustrated by Craig Orback, Nate has returned to Camp Wolf Trail with a secret: he’s a Bird Nerd. At least that’s what the kids at school call him when they tease him about his love of birds- from observing them, to learning interesting facts, to drawing them in his secret notebook. Nate confides in Vik, but can he trust his new friend, the cabin jokester? Tension grows before an overnight horse-riding trip when Nate discovers he has another secret. He is terrified of horses, even Herschel, the bony old horse assigned to Nate from the group of rescue horses the campers ride. When danger strikes, it’s up to Nate to face his fears! Both books sell for $9.95, for more information visit www.skyponypress.com. Boys Camp: Zach’s Story (IBSN:978-1-62914-805-2) Boys Camp: Nate’s Story (IBSN:978-1-62914-806-9)

On Dad’s Watch Saved By The iphone by Michael Malgeri Aren’t smart phones great!? I’ll bet some of you remember when we used to call them “car phones.” Mine broke once and AT&T told me to wait in my car for someone they’d send out between 8 and 5. That’s a George Wallace joke but statute of limitations laws have me covered. Along with not being much of a joke originator, I’m sure not the first to observe that most of what we do with our “phone” is so “non-phone.” No one picks up these days!!! When I want to talk to my son I have to send a public Tweet to hashtag #FromMikeysDad and hope he’s searching for it. This is getting way off the intent of this story, which is how our phones can be lifesavers at times. Just ask my kid. I’d just picked them up from school so I knew both were in the house. Even though we have a tri-level, yelling has been the standard mode of communication from basement to bedroom. However, on this occasion, I received a text message saying, “R u there?” I was surprised to get at least one full word, but a little concerned about getting a text versus a holler. “Yes.” I can spare two extra letters. “Can you help?” Hmmmmm. What, is the kid stuck under a pile of toys in the garage? I didn’t panic. “Sure, wat up?” I sacrificed an “h” to be more cool. “Cn u brng sm TP 2 the dwnstrs broom?” “Sure! :) “ A smiley was definitely in order. Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also written a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. Visit http://www.kids4biz.com.
