Letter From The Publisher: Publisher I’m so excited it’s spring time! And no, not because of the great weather (do we really ever have bad weather here in Los Angeles?) It’s my favorite time of year because it’s our EXPO season! I get to connect with many of you, our readers, at our live events! Our Summer Camp EXPO is Saturday and Sunday, March 10th and 11th. Saturday in Palos Verdes and Sunday in Santa Monica! We have over 50 summer camps for you to come explore with your kids! And then our 15th Annual What’s Up For Kids Expo is Saturday, April 28th at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center! (15 years—can you believe it?!) Our children have some many fabulously fun opportunities here in the South Bay – and beyond. We have local day camps with everything from tennis, to the beach, to science—and sleep away camps from sailing to horseback riding to just plain fun! All three of my children have attended day camp and sleep away camp. Camp is an opportunity for your children to experience independence and gain confidence in a safe, nurturing and FABULOUSLY FUN environment! Be sure to say “HI” when you stop by the Expos! QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING What Can You Do in 5 Minutes? By Ann Gambrell 1.

Move old newspapers to the recycle bin. If you have not read them in two days, the news is old. If you are computerized, you can get the news online.

2.

Sort laundry in baskets so anyone can “do a load”. Take plastic laundry baskets to sort whites, colors and dark items.

3.

De-clutter the kitchen junk drawer. Be brutal! Most of the things residing there are useless anyway. Necessary items might include: scissors, stapler, paper clips, food packaging labels, adhesive tape, a few bag twist ties (I said a few!), sticky notes, writing pens and a ruler and/or measuring tape.

4.

Sort mail and discard the unnecessary mail. If you know you are not buying anything from that store in the immediate future…recycle the flier/catalog.

5.

Water household plants. Use a soil meter to determine what needs watering at the time. Keep the watering can and liquid fertilizer handy for quick use.

6.

Take out the trash. Grab the largest trash container and walk thru the house to empty the smaller wastebaskets into it. Keep a supply of trash bags in the bottom of each trash and recycle container for easy access to replace a soiled bag.

7.

Remove trash from your car. Turn an empty tissue box into a trash bag container. It will hold 8 plastic grocery bags, making it easy to clear trash/ clutter from your car. Toss it in a trashcan when you reach your destination. If the bags are handy you are more likely to use them. Keep it where you can see it.

8.

Pay two or more bills. Keep your bill paying supplies handy. Check your online bill paying status. Purge your email junk/spam folder. Check for valid emails and delete those remaining.

9.

Give yourself a 5-minute time out! Relax with permission.

NOTE: Set a timer to stay focused. Quit when the bell rings. Do 5 minutes more if you like. Bit by bit you can do it!! Ann Gambrell is an organizational consultant and speaker available to inform and entertain audiences. She facilitates weekday and Saturday Clutter Support Groups and teaches organizing classes through the Torrance Adult School. To learn more, phone Ann at 310-212-0917 or request her for FREE monthly email tips email gambrellann@aol.com. You will be glad you did.

Cookin’ Corner Cookin’ Corner Red Lentil Soup By Nancy Newcomer I love to make food that looks pretty. As of late, I've fallen in love with red lentils & turmeric. Who can resist the orange hue of the lentils and the deep golden color of turmeric? Simply Gorgeous... yet, not just another pretty face. Packed with protein and antioxidants, my Red Lentil Soup is both nutritious and hearty. An extra plus: it's gluten free and vegan when made with veggie broth. Red lentils don't need to be soaked overnight so you'll save a lot of prep time, too. Try this. Make a double batch--it always gets snapped up quickly. Enjoy! Nancy Newcomer PS It's always twice as good the second day after the spices and flavors blend together.

Red Lentil Soup Serves 6-8 1 1/2 TB olive oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 carrots, finely chopped 3 stalks celery, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely minced 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp red chili flakes 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp sea salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 cup chopped tomatoes -use canned if not in season 1 cup lentils, rinsed and picked through for stones 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (you may sub Italian parsley if you’re not a cilantro fan) 6 cups veggie or chicken stock 1 cup fresh spinach chopped Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium heat. Add onion and leek and cook until softened. Add carrots, celery, garlic, chili flakes, cumin, turmeric, paprika salt, and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes and continue to stir. Add tomatoes, lentils, cilantro and vegetable stock. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, until lentils are soft, about 30 minutes. Add chopped spinach and let it wilt -about 1-2 minutes. Feel free to sprinkle a little more paprika to make it pretty Serve.

Longtime Santa Barbara radio personality, Nancy Newcomer is a food blogger and an accomplished cook & creator of simple, healthy meals made from fresh, organic ingredients. With an emphasis on gluten free fare and local farmer’s market bounty, her Facebook food blog, “Back to the Kitchen: Healthy Living with Real Food” is followed by people in over 22 countries. Check out Nancy’s new website, www.NancyNewcomer.com where she shares recipes & shopping tips and continues to advocate cooking “real food “ recipes and having sit down family dinners.

On dad’s watch Coming Clean Not long ago was the 8th anniversary of "On Dad's Watch." After a lot of soul searching, I've decided to come clean with my readers...I have no family and these stories are written under heavy sedation from an insane asylum...FOOLED YA! I'm joking of course, however at times, given the rambunctious tendencies of our children, especially in the early years, a home for the mentally traumatized seemed like a comforting option. Joking aside, it truly is time to disclose a matter, which has brought no small amount of challenge and the greatest of love to our family. Our son Michael has Tourette’s. For those of you not familiar with the affliction, it's a psycho-neurological condition that causes varying degrees of tics and outbursts of defiance. In his case, he's somewhat mild on the former and loaded up on the latter. Medically speaking, HE CAN BE A ROYAL, RELENTLESS PAIN IN THE A**!!! That was a rant of love of course. Put yet another way, it's a condition that likely would have gotten him plenty of wallops from well meaning but sterner parents had he been born a generation or two earlier. I hinted at the issue in "The Riverdancer's Secret." (http:// www.kids4biz.com/odw/odwarchives/odwarchivesbox.php?date=061211) That's the name given by Lisa to his lovable hop, skip and jump tic that he relies on every day for some yet to be discovered reason. Also, if you found yourself saying, "God, why do they put up with those shenanigans", you now have the answer. We learned about his condition when he was eight years old. "On Dad's Watch" began a couple of years prior. I'd been looking for a way to cope with his intractability and writing certainly helped until we found out the reason for his behavior. Had Lisa chosen the pen as an outlet, given her daily battles to educate, civilize and otherwise save our son, she'd have written "War and Peace" many times over. It's important that I mention a young lady, who by any measure of loyalty and love would perennially be crowned "sister of the year." Dominique is and

always will be devoted to her brother. We couldn't be more proud of her for growing up way earlier than called for. The real hero of the story, however, is Mikey. It's only in recent years that we realized what challenges ANYONE would face when consumed by a disease that basically causes even those who love you, to dislike you! I'd be lying if I said the personal guilt I felt upon coming to that realization was unbearable. Hey let's face it, he was driving us CRAZY!! There indeed was a lot of guilt, but it was quickly and overwhelmingly consumed by the pride that accompanied it. Like a thunderbolt I was hit with the vision of a child (Continued on page 27)

fighting and screaming from behind a wall that was hiding him from parents who could not see him. But he knocked it down and continues to do so with every challenge he so willingly faces and every goal he so steadfastly reaches. He's a bundle of joy and a hurricane of havoc. So there you have it! Full disclosure. It helps our family to share and for that I thank you all for listening. It would also be gratifying to believe that other families with similar circumstances may benefit in a small way from this story. Ooops it's time for my sedatives...just kidding. See ya next time!
