Cookin’ Corner Building a Perfect Lunch Box By Phoebe Schilla Can you believe it? It’s school time already!! As a private chef I have been privileged to work with a number of really wonderful families. At one time or another they have all struggled to create meals to nourish their kids. This is the common thread that unites all of the people that I work with. No one escapes it. Not even me with my own picky four year old. These are my tried and true tips to help you create the ‘perfect’ lunch for your child.

1.

2. 3.

4.

5.

Involve them! Take them to the farmer’s market to select seasonal fruit. Talk about colors/flavors and textures. If you can, take a field trip to a pick your own berry farm or vegetable farm. Let them eat a white strawberry and talk about how sour it is. Talk about finding the perfect strawberry/sweet pea/ tomato. Accept the fact that they may want to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the next 6 years. It’s ok. It will change. More importantly you don’t have to eat it. My daughter loves the bento box lunch concept and I know a lot of adults who do too. I love having several little things to choose from to eat. If that sounds intimidating and complicated, remember your leftovers. Build your lunches into your dinners. That way lunches are pretty much taken care of. Remember sweets and treats have there place in your child’s lunch too. I have seen too many people—not just kids—deprive themselves then secretly binge on chocolate or other sweet snacks. You don’t want to give your kids an opportunity to start hiding and sneaking food. It’s an unhealthy habit to start. If your child enjoys a diverse lunch then create a menu plan where Monday means noodles, Tuesday means tortillas, Wednesday is wrap day and so forth. You can vary the fillings and sides depending on what is available in your fridge. 6. If your child enjoys ‘food as art’, ie cut outs of cheese, sandwiches or a silly snake pizza, then embrace it, but have them do the work while you supervise. Editor’s Note: Chef Phoebe loved cooking from an early age growing up outside of Portland, Maine. Her mother and aunt were accomplished self-taught cooks who welcomed curious Phoebe into their kitchens. From tapping her own maple syrup from trees in the yard to baking homemade bread, Phoebe learned at an early age about the delicious benefits of whole, natural, seasonal foods. Phoebe lives in San Francisco with her husband and their daughter. In her spare time she enjoys reading cookbooks, traveling, studying yoga practices and, of course, learning about all the latest culinary happenings from around the globe. Courteous & Cool Courteous & Cool This Thing Called Conversation! By Kari Doody

Remember this thing called conversations? It wasn’t too long ago when people were forced to make conversation with others, whether they were in line at the market or waiting for their latte to be made. Now you can walk into any Starbucks and all you see is chair after chair with people on their computers or cell phones, not talking to anyone. Has technology given us a way to escape day to day conversation with people? It's true that our culture has adopted a more casual approach to social situations. Ironically, in the age of social media, when everyone is plugged in to everyone else at all times, proper social skills are being thrown to the wayside. Is it possible that we have too much of a good thing going on? Kids today who text and chat online the majority of the time are missing out on social experiences like the face-to-face conversation, where they might learn important lessons like expressing and reading body language, making eye contact while speaking, and how to deal with confrontation and conflict. It's clear that these kids are “interacting” with others almost constantly through cell phones and computers, but most of them don't even know how to properly shake someone's hand or even say "thank you" when complimented. It is possible to have social skills and stay connected at the same time. However, our kids will not learn how to do this on their own. Teach your kids to know when to put technology away. As great as technology is at keeping us connected to everyone else, using them constantly can degrade our interactions with people face-to-face. Make your kids aware of people around them and let them know that hiding their faces in their cell phones is not what interacting with people is all about. Kari Doody is Founder of the Courteous and Cool Etiquette School. After having three children and sharing stories with other mom’s, she realized that many role models that our children look up to were in the news – and not in a good way. We aren’t born with good manners, they need to be cultivated at a young age and reinforced throughout young adulthood. Whatever level your child is at, she can help them improve their skills and confidence – and they can have fun doing it with my age appropriate games and activities. Family Friendly Travel Charleston, South Carolina Recently I was fortunate it enough to visit Charleston, South Carolina. A city that harbors so much American History it’s hard to take it all in. Founded in 1670 by English Colonists the city then grew from a colonial seaport to a wealthy city. My dear friend from High School lives and works in the city so I felt like I had the upper hand in getting a local’s prospective. It is a city that is complete. I stayed at the beautiful yet family friendly Charleston Place Hotel by Orient Express, located within walking distance to all the shopping and museums. Beautiful Plantations and Ft. Sumter are just a few of the sites to see. We took a carriage ride so that I could gain prospective of the countless streets and alleys that seem to melt together in this story filled city. Connecting service on Delta Airlines thru Atlanta was the most affordable way to travel there and a car rental is not needed if you want to stay in the city limits. Various hotel accommodations exist from luxury hotels to local B & B’s. If you want to feel the unique southern hospitality take in Charleston and walk the streets, taste the magnificent food and slow things down a bit, something we can all benefit from. 10 Reasons to Ditch the Super Hero Cape NOW! Repeat after me: I can’t do it all, but I can have it all— without superhuman powers. Here are 10 reasons to ditch the superhero cape right now, and be happier than ever. 1. That cape really clashes with your newest power outfit 2. Accept it: it is physically impossible to do it all 3. Save your sanity, because it is, however, very possible to go crazy trying to do it all 4. It will likely get caught on something when you try to lean in (ala Sheryl Sandberg) 5. If you’re out saving the world, that leaves no time for achieving your own goals 6. Being a delegator, rather than a doer, actually gets you more control 7. Something’s gotta give, and prioritizing adds years on your life 8. Sometimes, failure is the best thing that can happen to you 9. Accepting help doesn’t make you weak, it makes you smart 10. Taking off the cape puts you one step closer to figuring out the recipe to your secret sauce

Go ahead, disrobe. Feel the relief? Now that the weight of the world is off your shoulders, it’s time to thrive both at home and at work. Meet Emma Kenney from the movie EPIC! By Cindy Donnelly The movie EPIC was released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on Blu-ray and DVD on August 20, 2013, and I recently had the chance to chat with the delightful Emma Kenney, the voice of Marigold Girl in the movie. (You may recognize the name as she also stars on Showtime’s hit series Shameless.) I asked her what she thought kids would like about EPIC and she enthusiastically explained that it is a “fun story of good and evil, set in a magical forest.” She felt both girls and boys would appreciate the fantasy and the action of the flower fairies and the tiny warriors riding on saddled hummingbirds through the forest. Emma stressed the film was not just for kids, but that all ages would enjoy the story, and the many funny parts. Emma’s favorite characters were Mub and Grub, a humorous slug and snail pair that play an important but hilarious role in the story. I learned that this was Emma’s first full length film, and the voiceover work took place over a one-year period. In the studio, director Chris Wedge (who also directed the Ice Age franchise) would explain how he wanted her to say her lines, and they would work side by side in the booth going over each line 20 or 30 times with different emotions. Emma said that it was very exciting to work one-on-one with the director. She indicated she never worked directly with the other actors, so I asked what it was like to see the film for the first time in its entirety. Emma said it was “very exciting, it’s such a great story,” and added that every now and then she would realize it was her voice she was hearing. I asked if she had any advice for kids that are interested in acting and without hesitation she said, “go for it, it is so creative and fun.” After pausing, she recommended taking acting classes and attending acting summer camps, too! I saw this film in the theater back in June with my husband and two kids ages 18 and 7, and all of us enjoyed it! For more about my interview with Emma Kenney or to download some wonderful bookmarks and games from the movie, see my blog post at www.whatsupforkids.com dated August 20th. (Thank you to Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment for providing the photo of Marigold Girl and Mother.)

Health & Wellness Health & Wellness The First BIG Roadblock For People Who Want to Exercise Whether you are currently exercising or not, there are several emotional and mental factors that become obstacles in creating your new habits. The first, and one of the biggest, is that people often commit to too much too soon, fail and get discouraged. There is common the term in the weight loss industry that we are all familiar with “yo-yo dieting”. People often start, then stop and repeat this pattern over and over. January 1st is an iconic day for most people to hop on this yo-yo diet train and the fitness and weight loss industry capitalize on everybody’s emotional desires to want to change and make this year different. If you're the person who just says, “I'm going to do this. I'm going to commit all or nothing,” I'm here to tell you that all or nothing will never work when it comes to your health. The reason why the majority of people fail on these types of programs is because you haven't factored in the realistic way to get exercise into your life. Set yourself up to win. Feel into what you would like to accomplish and if it feels good inside and you silently say to yourself “I can do that”- then that’s the first right step. If you set up a goal and you automatically feel resistance, your heart sinks or you start to get nervous, then the choice you are making is too much for you right now. Look at each week individually and make a plan for that week first. Give yourself the opportunity to try it out and see how it goes. Schedule it on your calendartreat it like any other appointment or commitment. If you wait to have time- you won’t find it. JJ Flizanes is the Director of Invisible Fitness. On Dad’ On Dad’s Watch s Watch Teen Girl By Michael Malgeri Yesterday our daughter turned 13. Don't ask me how that happened! Despite my attempts to slow things up by jotting down her weekly antics, and those of her menacing sidekick, time has flown like the wind. Jeesh, in another 13 years I'll have to take her off my health plan. In honor of reaching the teen milestone, here are a few life highlights for the kid who has more nicknames (Dom, Dom Dom, Domalama, Domster, Dominator, Kiwi, Keester, Weester... to name a few) than Obama has golf scorecards. Although she exhibited freakish strength as a toddler, she wasn't able to compete in the 2004 Olympics because the weightlifting venue didn't have diaper-changing facilities, nor could the schedule accommodate her afternoon nap. By age six she'd already redefined the word "sister" to mean "heroic companion" and "devoted pal". By age nine she smashed the record for "consecutive days waking up with a smile" and as of today, there's no end in sight. By age 12, despite an elegant physical metamorphosis, she's managed to retain the look of a giant baby...just check her hands, but don't get crushed. At age 13, she possesses the world's biggest heart, one locked forever, transcending space and time, with yours truly. Happy Birthday sweetheart! Daddy loves you! Editor’s Note: Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also written a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING Home Cleaning Mistakes! Very few folks enjoy cleaning. Yes, cleaning house is never “fun.” So here are a few negativities and mistakes to avoid...for success. Go for it, and plan a fun activity when it is completed! NO PLAN. Planning includes having systems in place making it easier. Example: Keep cleaning supplies under each sink. When the bathroom mirror needs cleaning, the cleaner, paper towels are right there. Keep clean trash bags in the bottom of each trashcan so when you pull out the full bag a new one is there. AVOID HELP. At our home the motto is: “We share the fun and the dirt.” Make chore lists for all according to their ability level. Help can also mean hiring a cleaning service to visit regularly. Whatever works for you. NO TOOLS. Having the proper equipment avoids procrastination. “I can’t reach that high.” Buy dusting wands in various pole lengths. For blinds, high furniture or light fixtures. Disposable dust cloths/mitts for cleaning surfaces and not just pushing dust around. A spray of cleaner on the broom bristles can catch dirt rather than spreading it around. And a mop with disposable wet sheets are great and yes…disposable. NO BREAKS. It usually does not need to be done all in one day…unless that is your plan for all to pitch in on Saturday and “get ‘er done.” If so… play music when cleaning, stop for coffee or a cold drink. Dance around. Otherwise, just do “some” each day: mirror one day, set of blinds another, kitchen sink another, etc. You are more likely to do more when you break it up. WAIT TOO LONG. The longer you put off cleaning, the worse it gets and may take longer to complete. Doing something each day is a motivator. You can do this and you will enjoy your clean home! Then celebrate…why not? © Quick Tips For Closets Ann Gambrell 2013 Ann Gambrell is an organizational consultant and speaker available to inform and entertain audiences. Family Friendly Travel 10 Top Tips for Attending Large Venue Events With Kids Attending a Music Festival with your kids is one of Fall’s greatest treats! Here are 10 top tips to attending a large venue event with children in tow. 1. Check out the festivals you are interested in attending to ensure they are kid friendly. The Montreal Jazz Festival I attended this summer has tons of accommodations and activities for children. (www.montrealjazzfest.com) 2. Purchase CD's prior to attending the event so your children can familiarize themselves with the music they'll be hearing. 3. Review the performance schedule and map of the venue online. That way if a nap or meal schedule needs to be adapted you can plan accordingly. 4. Keep the whole family to be well hydrated and full-bellied. Pack water or juice in a Hydro flask (www.hydroflask.com). Protein bars, nuts, dried fruit, and whole fresh fruit are great snacks. 5. Rent an "off-road" stroller to handle the rough, grassy terrain that makes up lots of festival sites. 6. Music at festivals can be very loud, even far away from the stage. Protect your young one's hearing with ear plugs or earmuffs. 7. Be prepared for any kind of weather, day and night. Bring sweaters, hats, (hair ties), sunscreen, raincoats and bathing suits. 8. Purchase a rubber bracelet and write your child's name, your name and cell phone number in case you get separated. Or you can buy ones already made at kidsafetyband.com. 9. Always know what your kids are wearing. In the morning snap a picture of your child with your cell phone camera or digital camera to help you remember. 10. As soon as you arrive at the festival point out a festival staff person and let your kids know they are safe people to turn to in case of an emergency.
