Sustainable Chemistry Research Center
Competition Place: Straubing Author: Rafael Moneo Arquitectos Collaborators: Alessandro Labriola, A.MartĂnez Dates: december 2014 - february 2015
The competition was abut the planning of a Sustainable Chemistry Research Center in Straubing, as a part of a network of renewable resources research centers already operating in this small German city. The project site lays a wide area facing the river Danube, and occasionally interested by floods. For this reason, the proposed building is elevated from the ground on concrete pillars, and integrates in its south side the existing water containment wall along the road. The main functions of the building (laboratories, classrooms and offices) are hosted in three separate wings that converge in a central hall. The South-East exposed facades are protected by a wooden frame, which reduces direct solar irradiance and overheating and inspired by the existing landscape of big trees growing along the river area.

Rambla in Bari Trade Fair
Realized Place: Bari Client: Fiera del Levante; Apulia Film Commission Authors: M.Sàito, M.Quarta, N. Stefanelli, Alessandro Labriola (collaborator to design and construction management) Dates: july 2013 - september 2014
This urban plan involves the main axis of the Bari Trade Fair “Fiera del Levante”, which is transformed into a pedestrian “Rambla”, furnished with trees and stone benches integrated in its design. The flooring is realized in an artificial stone cast in place, and produced mixing white concrete with shards of many types of stones from Apulia. The project also involved the construction of a small metal and glass building for security services at the entrance, whose design is inspired by the nearby pillars realized by Saverio Dioguardi, one of the most important architects from Bari of the first half of the XX century.

New Public Library The planned building occupies a green area, with two levels divided by a steep slope, used by the people of the village of Briosco for leisure and events. The new library is discretely insered in this context, in addition and not in place of the traditional use of the area. All the functions of the new library are situated at the ground floor, with transparent curtain walls that put them in direct relationship with the exterior green area. The spaces of the library are divided by concrete walls, which hold the covering and the green roof, thanks to which the building is integrated in the surrounding landscape. Each hall is defined by wooden walls and false ceiling, so that they look like wooden boxes insered in the concrete structure like books in shelves. The design of the wooden brise soleil system goes across the division of the concrete walls, and reunifies the whole facade.

THE NEW FACTORY A FACTORY FOR CULTURE The theme of the competition was the reuse of an industrial complex, abandoned after that the production was moved to another site. The proposal aims to turn a building which has lost his function into something that could match the mutated needs of the society: what is now a former factory or a “factory for nobody” could be turned into a “factory for culture”. New functions are hosted in the transformed building: it becomes a factory of art (art school, temporary ateliers and housing for artists, laboratories, temporary exhibition spaces); a factory of events (theatre, auditorium); a factory of ideas (creative coworking spaces). Most of the new facilities are defined by light, flexible and removable systems (movable modular panels fixed to a metal grid on the ceiling of each space): so that they could be easily dismantled and modified in order to satisfy future and different needs of the users.

Ideas for Diaz Square AND WATERFRONT
Project ideas Place: Bari Authors: M.SĂ ito, Alessandro Labriola Dates: october 2013
This projects - aimed to the regeneration of an important public space on the waterfront of Bari proposes a new overall design of the flooring, characterized by the rythmed succession of slightly elevated limestone areas. The paths and the resting area are also defined by the bichromy of the stone used. Statues and installation by the artist Mario Lovi enrich the space, in a fruitful dialogue between art and architecture. The result is a multipurpose space, where adults can meet, sit, watch at the sea and sunbath; while children can play and interact with the artistic installations. Linking Hatsala Campus to City Center
Europan 12 Competition Place: Kuopio Authors: Alessandro Labriola, G.Netti, U.Occhinegro, M.C.Petralla, M.Pignatelli , F.Stefanachi, A.Tassinari, N.Boccadoro Dates: march-june 2013
The theme of the competition was the reconnection between the city center of Kuopio and the Hatsala University, which is going to be transformed into a new cultural center. The two parts of the city are now divided by the railway: we proposed to create an elevated public place, something like a bridge-square, in order to get over the rails. Beneath this elevated square are located a series of facilities for health, wellness and free time.
This space is designed to remind a typical Finnish environment, the forest, with tree shaped pillars and light pouring down from above through courts and skylights. On the upper level, the square is flanked by residential buildings which re-elaborate the shape and dimension of the blocks in the city center. In some points their inclined covering works as a ramp for cyclo-pedestrian bridge to the square.

Eco-lodges for Sustainable Tourism
Feasibility Studio Place: Manfredonia Client: Private Authors: M.SĂ ito, Alessandro Labriola (collaborator) Dates: june - december 2012
This eco-lodge housing modules are designed for a touristic settlement situated in a complex and fragile natural habitat, characterized by the presence of wetland, spontaneous vegetation and protected bird species. In order to adapt to the particular character of the site, the rooms and the common services are designed to reduce as much as possible the impact of the intervention on natural environment. Sustainability is obtained through the use of wooden structure and eco-compatible materials; the modules are lifted above ground by pillars, preserving natural vegetation; the roofs are covered with photovoltaic panels, reducing energy consumption. The enviromental impact is reduced also by he adoption of bioclimatic strategies: brise-soleil systems to control the heating in summer; natural insulating materials in the facade; space between roof and the ceiling of the modules in order to produce natural ventilation.

BENCH FOR STREET FURNITURE
Realized Place: Milan Client: Greenwood s.r.l. Authors: M.SĂ ito, Alessandro Labriola (collaborator) Dates: july - october 2012
A prototype of this bench for street furniture was realized to be exposed in the architecture exposition MADE Expo 2012 in Milan. It is made of planks of composite wood, produced by Greenwood s.r.l., fixed to a metal structure. The light structure is obtained by thin metal plates bent and assembled together, and is screwed to the planks from the back, leaving no screw holes or heads on the exterior surface.

Sport and Free Time Park
Graduation Thesis Place: Lamezia Terme Teachers: M.Mezzina (supervisor); M.Beccu, S.Paris, D.Raffaele (tutors) Students: Alessandro Labriola, D.Grasso, A.Guglielmi, L.F.Lezzi, R.Manicone, E.Talamona Dates: october-july 2011
The final project of the Graduation Thesis was the planning of a “Sports and Free Time Park” in Lamezia Terme, in the area surrounding an abandoned stadium. The renewed stadium becomes part of a wider sports park, in which different sport and free time facilities –such as an open air theatre, a Spa resort, an indoor swimming pool – are hosted under great green roofed metal coverings, perfectly integrated in the landscape. These coverings are designed and dimensioned in order to resist to horizontal as well as vertical actions; with the use of different anti seismic devices, which result of primary importance due to the high seismic risk in the project site. The center of the complex is a commercial gallery, covered by a metal structure holden by tree pillars. Above this covering the main circular path that goes around the site ends in an elevated boulevard, a public space for meeting and free time. Above: structure detail Below: main gallery view
