CHANNELIZATION STRATEGY AND INTEGRATED BUFFER ZONE

Channelize the river as solution to control the flow and to keep clean the river. Actually there are five hand-made bridges, we propose to replace it taking care about the view impact and in same time creating filters that can mitigate in advance the water during the flood time.

Biofilters can be used to purify the water and to control the pollution. The river bottom as well, should be cleaned removing the waste.

PROPOSED URBAN WATER CYCLE

PROPOSED INTERVENTION STRATEGIES FLOOD IMPACT MITIGATION

FLOODING SCENARIO CASE STUDY: INDIA

FLOOD ACTION PLAN

Workshops - participatory approach, community involvement, Awareness/education program - build back better, accommodative construction methods, training courses Alarm system - operations procedure well communicated to the residents, warning sirens available in more locations Re-creating wetland boundaries along the edges of the channel (buffer zone expansion) Best mix of strategies

INFORMAL FLOOD MITIGATION MEASURES AND BUILDING RECOMMENDATIONS

INFORMAL FLOOD MITIGATION MEASURES AND BUILDING RECOMMENDATIONS Indicators to be measured and communicated to residents

Physical measures for Permanent resistance

Physical measures for Temporary resistance

To prevent water entering doors/ windows: - Auto-barriers(expensive) - Water-resisting external doors/windows - Sealant around external doors/windows

To prevent water entering doors/ windows: - Entrance door/window barriers (expensive) - Sandbags/absorbent bags - De-mountable barriers (expensive) - FloodSkirts (expensive)

To prevent water penetrating walls: - Re-pointing, repair of cracks in walls, seal service outlets - Covering weep holes - Wall sealant To prevent water entering service pipes - Non-return valves for wastewater pipes - Seal around service entrypoints.

To prevent water penetrating walls: - Airbrick covers To prevent water entering service pipes - Toilet plugs - Bolt-down inspection covers - Appliance vent covers - Pipe bungs

Resilience measures to limit water damage - Use water compatible building materials - Remove vulnerable items from flood risk (raise utilities and appliances, use removable fixtures and fittings, relocate or cover values) - Expel water (sump and pump)
