THESIS

SOCIAL HOUSING AREA EX-ITALGAS S. MARTA, Venice (VE), IT

The thesis project aims to take action over a wide area, today closed to the city of Venice, the ex-Italgas area in Santa Marta, in order to allow the housing development in Venice and solve the housing necessity for the most disadvantaged people. Following the municipal master plan directives, the project opens the area to the city, working on the creation of new urban spaces through the improvement of pedestrian and also water mobility, thanks to the creation of new water canals, and aims to the area riqualification, not only through new residential buildings and related services, but also re-using the existing industrail buildings. Designing new urban spaces, historical urban texture of Venice is reinterpreted: the historical Venetian narrow road is proposed as a link to larger spaces , where new homes can look out , giving urban texture a greater scope and better lighting. All new residential buildings are composed by different type of apartments, which fit together in different ways , creating every time new solutions . Apartments are mostly with independent access and are on two split levels , thus allowing the interlocking with other types . At these types there is that in single staircase , which connects more apartments , designed as spaces more flexible and for so designed as open spaces in which the functions fade into one another. The student house joins the new residences as a space dedicated mainly to the students of the nearby University of Venice : accommodations , designed for individual students or even in pairs , are designed as stand-alone units that, individual or aggregated, fit into the main volume of the building in which fit not only the services reserved to the students , but also public services for the community .

THE EX-ITALGAS AREA IN VENICE SANTA MARTA COVERS A SURFACE OF ABOUT 70,000 SQM AND OCCUPY A STRATEGIC POSITION FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY TO WEST. THE MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES AROUND THE SITE, IAUV AND CA’ FOSCARI UNIVERSITY , PORT AREA, THE NEW CITADEL OF JUSTICE, THE NEAR PIAZZALE ROMA, OFFERS MANY INTERVENTION PROJECT POINTS. PREVIOUS ANALYSIS CLEARLY SHOW THE BREAK OF THE TYPICAL HISTORICAL TEXTURE OF VENICE, AND MOST OF ALL IT’S REALLY EVIDENT THE BIG EMPY IN THE CITY TEXTURE COMPOSED BY THE PROJECT AREA . ANOTHER IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THE GREAT DIMENSION OF THE AREA, CURRENTLY OCCUPIED ONLY BY ABANDONED INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS AND ELEMENTS THAT GREEN HAVE TAKEN OVER. THE STRATEGY ADOPTED IS THE PRESERVATION OF THE OBVIOUS DIFFERENCE OF SCALE OF THE AREA IN THE CITY TEXTURE, AVOIDING THE TOTAL CONSTRUCTION AREA, AND MAKING IT A GREEN LUNG FOR THE CITY OF VENICE, MISSING OF SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC GREEN AREAS.

FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS OF P.R.G. The intervention project proposes the realization of 6 residential buildings with stores at ground floor in order to stimulate area Santa Marta development and so the settlement growth of Venice, by now hit by a significant decline in local population. These new residential buildings are composed of various housing types of different sizes to better meet the needs of users to whom they are intended, mostly families, young couples and students. These types combine “interlocking with each other , giving each time new different compositions , respecting the Venetian residencial tradition, although through its reinterpretation and actualization . The result is the creation of 73 apartments in total , most of them with independent access, divided according to denominations of 1 , 2 or 3 bedrooms , as well as the common body scale type with flexible open-space apartments.

ACCADEMIC WORKS

ARTIST’S RESIDENCE AND ATELIER, area San Lorenzo, Rome (RM), IT

The artist’s house is a project for the course of architectural composition . The project area is located in the historic district of San Lorenzo , characterized by the presence of craftsmen and artists . The project p develops the concept of the house-laboratory, where, however, the functions do not find a clear distinction , but rather blend into one another in a continuous dialogue . Recovering the historical typology of courtyard building, the residence develops as a solid carved into differently for each floor . The different functions are located on different floors of the house , but thanks to the presence of voids , both internal and external , each space is in continuous communication with the others : this solution allows to live the internal environment as a space in which each function is well defined although placed in an open space constantly constan in communication with the rest.

TERRACINA ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, Terracina (LT), IT The archaeological museum of Terracina is located at the archaeological site of Terracina, an important historical center for the presence of important archaeological remains of the Temple of Jupiter, dating from the time of Magnagrecia . The project area is situated on the top of a promontory from which you can admire the city of Terracina below . Because of the steep slope of the site , the project develops not only above ground , but also under. The compositional idea was born from the aggregation of simple shapes , rectangles , which appropriately rotated and wedged between them give rise to the footprint of the project . In each block find place different activities , while the connecting elements between the various elements are inserted between the overlapping blocks . The museum is on different levels , both internally and externally: outside this feature allows the realization of squares at different heights in which it is possible to carry out activities in accordance with the function occupied by the corresponding block. Internally , however , the constant changes in elevation create a dynamic space , thanks also to the presence of large glass windows that frame views always different and changing during the day .

SOCIAL HOUSING IN TOR BELLA MONACA, area Tor Bella Monaca, Rome (RM), IT The project for the construction of new residences in the neighborhood of Tor Bella Monaca , in the outskirts of Rome , is part of a larger project for the redevelopment of the area . The existing residential buildings , dating back to the '70s , are today degraded and no longer respond adequately to the housing needs , inevitably changed over the years. The project p area , located north from the more significant existing residential building, sees the construction of new residences according dynamics totally different from existing ones : the new residential complex , curve shaped, is emptied within, creating a court that is both public and private, accessible from the ground level , where shops and commercial activities find place. The two wings of the building , where the apartments, mostly dedicated to families, are located , are connected by bridges crossing the courtyard , creating a dynamic space . The study of the urban texture is not only about the new built , but also the existing: the project aims to connect the new with the old through the realization of both vehicular and pedestrians route, passing through the entire area and the buildings ,and the redevelopment of the inner squares of the existing building in green areas and meeting places for residents .

EXHIBITION PAVILION, area Piazzale dei Cinquecento, Rome (RM), IT The exhibition pavilion in Piazzale dei Cinquecento is a project for the course of Technical Architecture. The project p area is located opposite the railway Termini , the main junction of city railway mobility, and is today occupied by a parking exchange. The theme of university course required the design of an exhibition pavilion with flexible spaces for the realization of exhibitions and conventions of different nature. The project includes , in addition to the exhibition hall and the spaces linked to it, screening sc room, a small auditorium and dining space which can also be used by those who are not directly affected by the exhibitions held in the pavilion . The presence of historic buildings and especially the important presence of Termini station have been taken into account as a significant presence in the project : the pavilion , curves shaped and elusive , wants to move away from the neighborhood urban and suggest the idea of a dynamic and moving building, but stuck, caught. The extreme dynamism that characterizes the area , important junction of urban mobility and therefore characterized by the constant movement of people throughout the day , wants to be reported in the composition concept of the pavilion, a moving and dynamic creature, but stuck, even if only for a moment.
