In this Issue Street Photography is a very powerful way to express your love for photography and showcase your talent as a photographer and storyteller. Las Vegas is full of Lights, Casinos, Live Shows... but what must people don’t notice when photographing Las Vegas is the wonderful photo opportunities all around them. The people you encounter in the street, wether they are street performers or just interesting people with funny expressions, they are all around us. Through this issue you will be walking with me as I cross the Fremont Experience from East to West and photographing interesting people along the way.

Also in this issue, I will share my suggestions and tips while shooting street photography, my choice of gear and lenses along with information about the pictures themselves and a description of the image you see. No two days are alike in Las Vegas, experiences vary depending on the time of day and day of the year. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy my photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. -Alex Tapia

“Enter Here”

Must of the interesting stuff happens at night in Vegas, so keep and eye on your ISO and your Aperture, using a flash is Wether is true or not that Las Vegas is the “Street a big “Don’t do it” in street photography unless the photos are Photography Capital of the World”, we have to agree, there staged. are some very interesting sights to photograph here! Try to use a mid to large zoom lens to avoid being too obvious I have been to many large cities like New York, Los Angeles, while walking around, some people get intimidated by a Chicago, San Francisco… but none is as interesting and full camera. of life as Las Vegas.

Advise: Don’t rely on the Histogram while shooting RAW images, the Histogram is generated in-camera and only applies to JPG files

I tried not to get too close to the subjects, some times if they see you taking a picture, their behavior may not be as natural.

Different from the previous picture, sometimes the subject is That is where having a small camera like a mirrorless or point nice enough to smile if he spot you taking his picture. That is and shoot with a large zoom comes in handy. not always the case and that is why it is better to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Use a Zoom Lens to have the flexibility to get close to the subject without the need to physically get close to the subject‌ I now, it sounds weird. But trust me, a fixed focal lens will work but will make your job much harder.

Many people did not noticed, but when I was photographing this young kid playing the “drums”, I noticed he was really into it, giving his whole soul to his performance. It was very fulfilling to watch, I’m glad I was able to capture his expression which is the main subject of this photo. I also used a slower shutter speed to be able to capture the movement of the drumsticks, a higher shutter speed would have frozen the movement and give the impression that he was just sitting there without movement.

Not much need to be said about these pictures. There was a By using Auto White Balance, I was able to keep the ambient girl dancing on top of the bar, I bumped up the ISO, color of the scene, it may look a bit red or yellow but it gives increased the shutter speed and fired away. the viewer an accurate representation of what the photographer was seeing in that particular moment. You may notice that I used AWB on these photos, there is a reason for that, while walking on Fremont you will notice that I decided to make the photo below black and white to reflect there are thousands of LED and fluorescent lights of many the mood of the image. colors all around, there is no way to compensate for all that It is one of the sad realities of Las Vegas, not everybody is color, it will look red now, but it will look blue a few feet having a good time‌ down the street.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to experiment with black and white images. Some Photos show better emotional response in black and white.

For the photo on the right, I may have gotten too close to the subject, I thought that since he was holding a big sign he was just calling for attention and would not mind me taking his picture, I was wrong. he gave me a look, put the sign down and walked away, not sure why, maybe he thought I was a Patriots fan.

Ok, how can I not take some pictures of the Casino signs in Las Vegas? Yes, my main focus was the people, but you have to see the big picture, some people will not know you are in Las Vegas unless there is a picture of a casino or some crazy neon signs.

When it comes to street performers in Las Vegas these two are on a whole new level of crazy (in a fun way). I had to take a photo of these guys, not only it was about 49ยบ/F. In Vegas, but these guys had very little close and had some crazy dance moves. They get my high five for style.

Will you like to duel a storm trooper with a lightsaber or maybe have the one in a lifetime opportunity to kick somebody in a sensitive area? Yes, you can do that in Vegas. It is interesting how creative people can get in order to get some cash in Las Vegas, you find all kinds of interesting characters, from street performers to just strange people. All makes for an interesting photo and the opportunity to capture a memory.

Some of my favorites photos are of people taking photos. not sure why people insist of taking pictures with their iPads, like if taking them with their cellphones wasn’t bad enough. To me, these make for an interesting picture, it shows the point of view of a third person in the photo, the expression of the people and the scene around them. I also used AWB in this photo to capture the ambient light from the surrounding neon lights. The tungsten tone of the photo helps the viewer understand the mood of the scene and also take away the sense of how cold it was that night. If I wanted to show that the night was cold, I would have used Tungsten balance but then the picture would have had a sad and cold tone to it.

Not only you will find street performers in Las Vegas, but you also have the change to experience and photograph live concerts.

When Photographing singers with microphones, make sure you shoot from a 45ยบ angle, if you shoot from the front the microphone will cover must of their faces.

From the Cover Sometimes when shooting street photography you come a cross a scene that can be described without the need for words, I believe this picture is one of those times. I used my Zoom lens, so I was far enough not to be noticed, that allowed me to take a series of photos of them without being spotted. On these set of photos I used Auto White Balance, just like the pictures before, I wanted to reflect the ambient light from the neon signs of the nearby casinos,

Since there is a very busy background, I opened the aperture enough to get a good defocus of the background to avoid getting the subjects lost in the scenery. I also had to increase the shutter speed quite a bit to avoid motion blur since the girl was moving quite fast and making lots of hand gestures. Because the shutter speed was high, I had to compensate by increasing the ISO also. The result was a set of images that capture the moment and open the imagination of the reader on what is happening in the picture.

Something I did not expect to see while walking in Vegas was a celebrity. -“News reporters are not celebrities you may say, but they are on our TVs every night and are easily recognizable, so, to me, they are celebrities to some extent.

stay as far away as possible so I would not disturb their work, she did noticed me taking pictures and was nice enough to give me a slight smile and continue working.

But I was able to take some pictures of her before she started her report. Now she is even more famous because I am sure I saw Tiffany Lane from the local news channel talking about you did not know who she was before you saw her in this the black Friday deals and shopping madness, again, I tried to magazine!
