Station Pier Redevelopment
tutors: Mark Nixon, George King of NEON
Exploring the inverse of the principle that ‘form follows function’ required a loss of control, endeavoring to apply pragmatic architectural design to a previously determined abstract form. With no set program, various origami forms were explored, ultimately judged purely in terms of their aesthetic value and then post rationalised to determine a suitable program to which they could be then applied. Station Pier is a Port Melbourne ferry terminal that primarily services the Spirit of Tasmania, however functioning as a gateway to the city of Melbourne its substandard services and rundown infrastructure weakens the tourism industry. The architectural application of the finned form (utilised as the roof) establishes a sense of monumentality, modulating light and shadow, transforming the drab terminal into an experience in itself. The clustered teardrop from was utilised as a subterranean market space, providing public space and culture in a dynamic environment. In general, post rationalising form to suit program is not acceptable practice, however as an exercise such an attempt does broaden perceptions of architectural form. 6

Willow Material Research tutor: Dr Tim Schork
The aim of the studio was to explore the potential contemporary applications of willow, a sustainable material, now often considered a weed as a result of its hardiness. The research pursued a combination of manually weaving the willow by hand, as it was traditionally crafted, with contemporary computer aided manufacturing in order to diversify willow’s continued implementation as a structural material. Willow exhibits state retention properties when soaked in water, forcibly set in a form and then allowed to dry. As a woven surface this allows the material to be pressed into a structurally stable doubly curved form. Modules of pressed willow can then be utilised as building blocks to form structures such as the proposed pavilion design. The innovative exploration of willow’s properties and its potential to be married to robotic fabrication revealed potential applications that had not previously been explored, suggesting that the construction of large structures may be plausible with this material.

Monash Building H Redevelopment tutor: Jonothan Grove
Building H is a multi use building that forms part of Monash University’s Caulfield campus. Whilst of a quite simple design, the existing building exhibits poor environmental performance, negatively impacting the comfort its inhabitants. This task proposed a series of active and passive modifications that would improve the comfort of the users and the building’s efficiency and environmental sustainability. One of the primary issues identified was the poor utilisation of natural light, both in terms of glare towards the peripheries of the building and low illumination in internal spaces. A system of shades that actively modulated incident light was introduced on the highly exposed northern façade, in addition to the removal of internal partitions to enhance light penetration, which improved the internal environment. Similarly the careful removal of floor slab enabled natural light to reach the deepest spaces whilst creating pleasant outdoor portals.
14
The creation of buildings and their life-cycle is one of the greatest consumers of our finite resources and whilst they are a necessity, careful design can significantly mitigate their negative impact on the environment.

Kunshan II
tutors: Markus Jung and Maud Cassaignau
The Kunshan Studio was a real time project examining new urban typologies and form for the emerging city of Kunshan in China. The city’s low-lying regularly inundated topography has posed a challenge to its development from an agricultural past to an urbanized community. The city is seeking to develop new urban strategies and models that demonstrate an integration of water management, architecture, urbanism and Kunshan’s cultural heritage. A key focus of Kunshan II was the integration of storm water retention and processing into urban form, minimizing the run off into canals that cause regular flooding. Accordingly, my team explored new forms of water edge typologies that both provided public amenity and resilience to expected flood conditions, protecting the broader urban scheme from inundation. The studio has been a trans-disciplinary collaboration between the Department of Architecture MADA, Monash University and the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities. Since the project’s completion, the government of Kunshan has accepted the proposed schemes as a means to considerately develop the city’s urban form. http://www.kunshanstudio.com.au 22

Components of this project will be displayed at the 16th International Architecture Biennale (2018), Venice, Australian Pavilion.
Swamp City II proposes urban design strategies for managing flooding in the lowlying city of Arden Macaulay, to the west of Melbourne. With the city’s development, Moonee Ponds creek has been constrained to flow directly toward the bay. However this situation allows the creek to quickly overflow its banks and flood the low-lying valley in which Arden Macaulay sits. The proposed strategies makes space for water. Allowing the creek to branch out and meander across the valley, water is brought into the fabric of Arden Macaulay. This is achieved whilst specifying areas of dense development that will be permanently protected from flooding. These islands are made from cut and fill sourced from the lowered surrounding wetland, also forming deep ponds that collect and store water.
30
This characterful, integrated environment, echoing the historic swamp and chain of ponds, effectively provides sufficient land for built form within an existing floodplain, guaranteeing a resilient and enduring future life of Arden Macaulay.

Kings Park Gallery tutor: Sean McMahon
This project was primarily an exercise in consolidating documentation skills. The objective was to experience all stages of an Architectural project including: formation of brief, letter of engagement, Client Architect Agreement, context analysis, design, town planning documentation and application, design development, NCC compliance, and construction documentation, including specifying and scheduling. In order to test these skills, we designed a gallery in Kings Park, Perth. Utilising a diagrid frame as the primary structure allowed a large space to be spanned with a single form, ensuring flexibility of the gallery space within. A skin of variously transparent panels was then draped over this frame, ensuring appropriate modulation of natural light to the gallery and leisure spaces. Primarily considering the structure and detail of the building, the challenge was to rationalise the curving diagrid frame and panels to as few types as possible, ensuring that the project could be feasibly constructed. These components were then detailed, exploring construction methods for which there is little precedent.

Robotic Arm Testing supervisor: Dr Tim Schork
With the installation of Monash University’s new six-axis robotic arm, a small group of students were selected to be trained in its operations and test its capabilities. Such a machine is an incredibly powerful and diverse fabrication tool, primarily allowing three-dimensional milling at an extraordinary speed and allowing complex geometries to be produced.

Whilst the self-storage and industrial units were relatively easy to plan, defined by vehicle access and a desire for regularity of area and form, childcare has quite a contrasting set of requirements. By removing the primary classrooms and play areas from the ground plane, the children are both removed from the physical danger of vehicles and the concrete environment.

This project required the delivery of an unconventional combination of programs previously unexplored by an architectural firm that specializes in multi-residential developments. Retail, self-storage, industrial units and a childcare center were organized onto the large site, defined by an existing warehouse that would only be partially removed.

Working within such a large team was valuable experience, breaking the required documentation down into individually manageable components in order that the detail of the construction was coherently and consistently built up.

Rothelowman Architects
The documentation of this project, for which I joined the team, was an immense task as no two levels of the development were the same. In addition, there were the combined programs of a ground floor commercial space combined with multiple types of residential dwellings supported by numerous forms of amenities, such as pool and function room. Residential setbacks had also had a strong influence on the subsequent form of the building, staggering the massing and resulting in continuous detailing of the changing construction.
