Monsters Monsters! Ciou & Malojo
! Both Ciou and Malojo have a healthy respect for all things and creatures bizarre and odd, for those characters who live outside the social norms and might like to, say, eat children…or like to parade together in pageants of other-wordly creatures…it's all there in their work which is coming to Ireland for the first time, in "Monsters, Monsters!”. White Lady Art is delighted to introduce to you Ciou and Malojo, who have exhibited all over the world, from America to Italy to France, and now to Ireland. They are very well respected artists in the style of Pop Surrealism and Counter Culture art, with impeccable painting and drawing technique and a delicious revelry in everything weird and strange. It will be a celebration of Oddness! ! There are a lot of tattoo references and influences in both artist's work, which you can see in the strong outlines, the two-dimensional aspect of the work, the bold characterization, and the overt symbolism often found in tattoo "flash" - specially designed images meant for quick body art traditionally displayed on studio walls for people just 'walking in' for a tattoo. Swallows, banners with writing, dark subject matter with a humorous edge, are all typical of flash, and of Pop Surrealism which is heavily influenced by counter culture and 'pop' art of lowbrow sources like advertising and entertainment, that originated in America in the mid-20th Century. In Ciou's work there are Mexican Day of the Dead themes, plenty of designs based in Nature, and nods to paganism. It is also romantic, feminine and love is a recurring theme to the work which contrasts intriguingly with the heavy use of black and bright colors. She uses French literature ephemera repeatedly as a washed backdrop to her work whereby you can just make out the French language, adding a firm grounding in her native country but as you cannot read the full text is meant not to isolate the viewer but to draw them into a world made up of unusual creatures and words. Her animals are humanized with faces, and her 'people' have animal characteristics, which marries the two species together and softens the boundaries between all living creatures in Nature. They live together, proud of who they are and parade through the scenes with joy! Anyone who grew up watching Disney characters and Saturday morning T.V. will recognize where Malojo's characters came from! In his world they are like superheroes, muscled, mean, and ready for a fist fight at any given notice. While there is certainly a devilish and mean-streak to his characters, they don't take themselves too seriously, often winking at recognizable symbols of organized religion. Haloes on the heads of rock star pontiffs also have figures of their moral conscience riding on their shoulders, and a distant relative of Felix the Cat appears like Satan playing a banjo coming out of a bottle marked with poison symbols. His characters are funny and it's hard not to cheer for the underdog and hope he enjoys his meal of a small child in "Long Live the Wolf!" as he seems so unashamed and thrilled with the idea. Clown-like "Junior" could be any screaming child in the
supermarket on a Sunday morning…we've all met one. Malojo's characters could be evil but they could also be the extremes of peripheral society, or representations of how we all feel about everything banal or "normal". In a perfect world everyone would have a dog devil on one shoulder and a cat angel on the other telling us right and wrong - but would we listen? His works are for anyone who stopped listening and just did it anyway! A big thank you to Alliance Francaise Dublin for their support with our exhibition.
