“Third World� An Exhibition of New Work from Kathrina Rupit & Marca Mix White Lady Art Gallery May 3rd - 25th 2013
The exhibition is titled "Third World" not only to question what the viewer considers to be a third, second or first world country, but also to acknowledge that in some cases third and first world categories can live side by side. This is the case in the birth places of both artists who are exhibiting in this show, Kathrina Rupit (Mexico) and Marca Mix (South Africa). The vibrancy of the colours in both artist's work speaks of hot countries with their own unique cultural contexts that are infused into the themes of the pictures. The "Third World" exhibition is a celebration of the unity to be found in groups of people, despite and also because of their differences, where the individual is to be valued regardless of any form of perceived pigeon-holing. The divide between rich and poor is a constant presence in South Africa, with a balance met where business and communities of multiple ethnicities and beliefs all exist together in a city or township, or live in a tense dichotomy of racial antagonism where certain areas do not mix, or do so with resulting violence. Marca's own experience as a young man growing up in Durban is that street art became a kind of free pass into the largely black areas of the city. In the white population areas the police would be called as soon as the spray cans came out and there was little scope to paint outside. However, the poorer areas were much more available to paint in, and Marca experienced a kind of singular inclusion into the community as his artwork attracted the attention of local gangs who offered their names to be written above the pieces to protect it from vandals. Kathrina's work has an expression of concern that is closer to home in a literal sense, as much of her work has been created to expand on the sensation of prejudice towards immigrants entering Ireland to live and work. From the offset as travel documents are presented at an Irish airport, to later problems that arise, perhaps due to unrecognized educational certificates when applying for jobs, she has expounded on an already sensitive topic that is relevant to all of us. She highlights the question of who has the right to live and work in a chosen country, whose decision this becomes, and the concept of a borderless unity between cultures. As a Mexican woman living in Dublin she has experienced occasional cultural misunderstanding as well as outright racial ignorance, and with this show wishes to step towards the ideal of a unconditional unity. As Marca experienced the effect artwork can have in accessing a previously 'forbidden' area - and group of people without which would have been impossible, together in this show Kathrina and Marca want to both educate and inspire their audience to address these political issues publicly and privately.
