ANNUAL

All in for Dawson All in for Dawson

Dear Dawson Community,

The 2021-2022 school year was truly extraordinary. As we continued to emerge from the pandemic, and although not a complete return to how things used to be, we were incredibly grateful to welcome back many of our beloved community traditions and celebrations.

Now, it’s time to focus forward. The Alexander Dawson School is a dynamic and vibrant place, and we are forming a legacy of thought leaders who will take the bold steps necessary to help shape the future of education. Your gifts given to the Dawson Annual Fund help us continue to offer an innovative educational program that engages and empowers our students and faculty. You allow us to provide high-quality teaching and student support services that ensure excellence in academics and athletics, and a beautiful, secure campus that supports Dawson’s modern learning landscape.

We are delighted to present this Annual Report celebrating the accomplishments of the 2021-2022 school year and will showcase how going “All In” for Dawson’s future allows us to celebrate our present and reflect upon the past year in which fresh priorities emerged and new, valuable lessons were learned. Our desire to work toward the goal of deepening Dawson’s culture of philanthropy means we have many exciting possibilities in front of us.

As we look ahead with hope and ambition at the future we are already creating for our students, we also want to acknowledge the many remarkable people who helped shape our amazing school as it thrives today. On behalf of every community member who greatly benefits from your generosity, we thank you for your dedication to The Alexander Dawson School.

With gratitude,

Roxanne Stansbury

Celebrating the Past

4

As illustrated in our Vision, a Dawson student exits our doors ready to achieve individual potential, savor life, and meet the challenges of the world. Dawson seeks to maintain meaningful connections with the students we educate, as they are the change-makers of today and tomorrow. We want our culture to be a reciprocal and rewarding one of support and engagement because our alumni are central to the current and future well-being of The Alexander Dawson School.

An alum’s partnership with the School can offer keen insight into the meaning and purpose behind the Dawson Difference. And as Dawson continues to cement itself as a center for academic excellence, we are focused on two initial goals for new alumni advancement efforts.

A robust program that serves our alumni:

We are in the initial stages of creating a portfolio of services that can be of value to our former Dawson Bears. Our plans include a support system that reconnects our alums and the School through events and reunions, blogs, career networking, and other general opportunities through onand off-campus projects.

A program that empowers our alumni to serve Dawson: The time and energy of our alums are crucial to advancing our institution through integral recommendations, guidance, recruitment and retainment efforts, stewardship, and advocacy. Honest and candid advice given to current students and the Dawson community as a whole is paramount to our continued growth as a school and for our reach across the Las Vegas Valley.

In April of 2022, we were excited to bring back to campus many of our incredible alumni in celebration of their successes and accomplishments at an Alumni Mixer during our Homecoming weekend festivities. It was a great chance for our former students to reconnect with friends and faculty and share stories, memories, and fun.

5

We want this event to be the first of many that encourage our graduates to continue their involvement with Dawson. In celebrating the past, the collaborative endeavors the School is in the process of forming with our alumni are sure to elevate the experiences of our students today and far into the future.

We are proud to announce the following Dawson graduates who, together with Director of Grades 6-8 Chris Estrella and Advancement Manager Stella Finfrock, form our new Alumni Council.

Embracing the Present

Leading by Example: The Rogers Family’s Story

Perry and Nicole Rogers with children Ryan (‘27), Grant (‘14) & Hannah (‘11)

10

Perry and Nicole Rogers – parents to current student Ryan (‘27) and alums Hannah (‘11) and Grant (‘14) – have demonstrated a deep commitment to the Dawson community for many years. In addition to Nicole serving as a school trustee with the Alexander Dawson Board of Trustees, she and Perry are both contributing members of the School’s Advancement Committee in support of our fundraising and philanthropic endeavors. The Rogers family plays a vital role in Dawson’s achievements and successes, and the School is grateful to have received generous multi-year donations from them to strengthen our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Additionally, their contributions have created faculty professional development opportunities that allow us to continue to provide high-quality, personalized instruction so students thrive at Dawson and beyond.

As generous benefactors of the School, we asked the Rogers family about the motivation behind their ongoing support of Dawson.

You’ve sent your children to Dawson over many years. Why do you continue to choose this school?

For the families who are new to Dawson, we have three children who attended the School. Hannah attended from kindergarten through the eighth grade and is graduating from Duke Law School in May of 2023. Grant attended from Early Childhood through the eighth grade and graduated summa cum laude from George Washington University in May of 2022. And Ryan began his journey at Dawson in Early Childhood and is currently in the fourth grade.

We have continued to choose Dawson because of the culture. Dawson understands and accomplishes the balancing act of teaching children to love learning while allowing them to have a fun-filled childhood. The choice is also made easy because of the other families who choose to attend Dawson. Collectively, we have helped create a school culture of which we are proud to be a part. It takes a diverse village to raise children, and we love the village Dawson has built.

11
12

Dawson is mindful of making sure every student, parent, faculty, and staff member feels connected and heard. Of course, if we want to be successful in achieving a diverse set of opinions for our students, faculty, administration, and parents, then we have to make sure we have a diverse population. We must be thoughtful and intentional in our DEI work because the world our children will step into as adults needs to reflect the world in which they will work, develop, and thrive.

We recognize that philanthropy is a very personal decision for every family. We can only speak to our own journey, and Dawson has been a vital part of our family giving. Part of this is because we believe so much in the Dawson Mission and the community. Additionally, education has such a multi-generational impact, and we believe this is a great way for our philanthropic dollars to have an extended reach. A meaningful reason for giving to Dawson is you get to witness the end result of your gift in such an up close and personal way. You get to see the smiles on all of the kids faces as they participate in a play, listen to their answers when they are raising their hands in class, or hear your own child tell you just how much they love going to school. We are so blessed to be part of the Dawson family, and we are so fortunate to be surrounded by so many incredible people.

How do you hope your gifts for the School help impact Dawson and our community?
How important is philanthropy to your family overall? What do you teach your children about leadership and philanthropy?
13

All in for the Future

Reinforcing Dawson’s foundation as a center of academic excellence means continuing to inspire a culture of philanthropy across campus. The traditions we are establishing around giving are a testament to our indelible impact, and the dedication of this community is collectively responsible for the profound influence we all have on the lives of our amazing students. The generous support of our community members during the 20212022 school year allowed us to go “All In For Dawson” and make unimaginable strides in support of access and affordability, athletics, innovative and creative campus spaces, and faculty professional development. Some of our many successes from the gifts received went to improve and enhance the School in the following ways, and the alignment of these resources with our Mission will ensure Dawson’s long-term sustainability as we embrace the future.

Access & Affordability:

Dawson seeks a learning environment that is reflective of the evolving Las Vegas community, its surrounding areas, and our global society. When students see themselves positively reflected in their school, they are better able to achieve their individual potential.

• Financial aid

• Support of scholarship programs

Athletics:

We strive to teach our student-athletes to develop an inclusive and healthy mindset toward competitive activities. They are important representatives of the School’s Mission and Core Beliefs, both on campus and throughout the larger Las Vegas community, and they represent our school with pride and spirit.

•New uniforms and equipment for all sports teams

•Recruitment of knowledgeable coaches and mentors

•Renovation of our Middle School baseball field

•Cheer mats and competition signs

•Golf bags

•Championship t-shirts in celebration of sports teams

15
16
Middle School Room 303 faculty collaborative workspace

Campus Spaces:

Our campus is 33 acres of desert beauty, offering extraordinary indoor and outdoor areas that spark our students’ curiosity, need to explore, and personalized learning experiences. We seek to preserve our unique buildings and grounds for both the current and future generations of Dawson students.

•Hardscape replacement and parking lot restriping

•New flooring in the Dining Hall

•Dining Hall stage renovation

•Middle School Room 303 as a faculty collaborative workspace

•Admissions Lounge for prospective families in the Middle School office

•Upgrade to classrooms

•Installation of additional biometric doors on buildings for safety and security

•Upgrade to a school-wide camera system for safety and security

•Set design and lighting for the middle school Beauty and the Beast, Jr. musical

Faculty Professional Development:

With our focus on modern learning for real-world connections and Project-Based Learning initiatives, Dawson provides a transformative education for its students through the opportunities our teachers are given to continue to engage them in creative and collaborative thinking and learning.

•Teacher Academy

•Recruitment and retention of global educators

•Laptops and technology

•Curriculum writing for grade-level and departmental projects

•Gold-Standard Project-Based Learning training, including attending the 2022 PBL World conference

•Canvas Learning Management System training

•Social Thinking training

•Literacy training

•Diversity, Equity & Inclusion training

•Student engagement training

All In For Everything:

Unrestricted gifts help support everything our families love and appreciate about Dawson. This spans all school-related needs, from everyday items for our students like pencils and paper to big-ticket items like nationally recognized parenting and educational experts who consult with our community.

Additionally, as an independent, not-for-profit school, Dawson does not receive state or federal funding. The School, therefore, relies entirely on the tuition dollars paid by our families, the Alexander Dawson Foundation’s bond payment, and charitable donations from our community members. The cost of an education for every single Dawson student is therefore subsidized; meaning, many families paying the full tuition price are still paying less than the School is spending to educate each student, leaving Dawson to rely on alternative sources of funding – including and especially the Annual Fund. This is why recurring giving matters: We must work each year to close the gap in tuition between the cost of a Dawson education and our tuition price in order to provide the equitable academic experience we promise our students today and for those who will enter our doors well into the future.
