Understanding Endoscopic Spine Surgery Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) covers a range of various surgical approaches which are designed to access the spinal column without damaging the surrounding tissues which happens during open surgery. The innovative endoscopic surgical methods adopted by doctors today ensure that patients get state of the art treatment.

Some of the conditions that can be treated by MISS include;    

Scoliosis Degenerative disc disease Herniated disc Spinal stenosis

Using computer assisted technology and specialized tools, MISS is a good alternative for those patients who want faster recovery after a surgery and less post operative pain as well as less or no stay at the hospital. MISS is also appropriate for those who are looking for smaller incisions. Another advantage of this kind of surgery is the less chances of infections. One of the main reasons for developing endoscopic

disc surgery was to treat spine related problems with minimum injury to the muscles and other spinal structures.

There are 2 main goals of endoscopic spinal surgery procedures: 



Decompression: It is to take off the pressure from your spine or nerve roots. Such a pressure results in a pinch nerve leading to pain. The main aim of the procedure is to relieve the pressure thus decrease the pain. Stabilization: Many times the source of pain or abnormal movement causing pain maybe a mobile segment. When this takes place, a stabilizing surgery is required which includes fusion done via instrumentation.

Understanding Endoscopic Surgery Endoscopic_spine_surgery is a surgery in which a small video camera is used, which is known as an endoscope. This endoscope is tinnier than a dime and it is passed through small incisions. These surgical incisions are usually less than 2 cm in size and they can access your spine easily. This procedure according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons is also known as Keyhole Surgery since the endoscope guides the surgeon via an internal view of the body displayed on the screens within the

operating room. Endoscopes however are used in very few spine surgeries. This kind of surgery is associated with fewer side effects in comparison to traditional surgeries. Common Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries 

MIS Lumbar Diskectomy: When a herniated disc in the lower back pinches the nerve, it leads to severe leg pain, weakness and numbness. In order to relieve these symptoms, the disk is removed and this procedure is known as diskectomy.

MIS Lumbar Fusion: It is a spinal fusion surgery that aims to stop motion at vertebral segment that is painful. This helps to reduce the pain that radiates from the joint.

Common Complications As with any surgery, there are a few complications associated with MISS 

Infection

Bleeding

Pain at the site of graft

Blood clots

Nerve damage

Pseudarthrosis ( A condition where the is lack of bone formation)
