Stuck Sash: The most common reason for a sash window to not open at all is because it has been painted shut. In order to free it, you can use a wide-blade putty knife and run it between the window and the frame, this will free the frame. If needed you can also use a hammer against the knife to break the break the paint seal. You will have to do this on both the sides and then you can tray and open the window. In case this doesn’t help, you can place a small piece of lumber on the inside sill and then using a pry bar you can ease the window up. However, be careful not to exert too much force. After opening the window, you should clean and lubricate the window tracks in order to avoid any recurrence. Now scrap out the putty from both the sides of the window. Make sure you also remove the old metal tabs which are installed to hold the glass in place. 1/16th to 1/8th inch smaller than the opening. Take some putty in a thin tube between your fingers. Now start from one corner the inside of the window and apply a line of putty around the whole frame. Now put some more putty around the window opening on the outside of the glass. Using a putty knife, push it down. Lastly, to complete it, use a razor blade or a knife to ensure that the putty is in level on both the sides.
If the window frame or a part of it or even the window sill has rotted, you don’t need to replacement windows, all you need to do is repair the window. You can simply chisel out the rotted area and then soak the area in a liquid epoxy consolidant. Soak it again after 5 minutes and continue doing it until the wood is flooded with the epoxy. Now mix epoxy filler and place it in the hole using a putty knife, you must ensure that it’s filled completely. Once the filler dries up, you can level it using a sandpaper. Make sure to paint or seal the wood within 3 days after doing this procedure.
