Information
This particular border of Wisleys many gardens has plants ranging from ground level up to 2.5m tall and is very characteristic of Piet Oudolf planting design. The soil of this space has small varietions but the majority it mulched with ‘rivers’ of pebbles running next to the gravel pathways. This border separates the eclosed nature of the gardenns on on side and the open nature of the large grass space leading to the pond and cafe. It is mostly perenial grasses that head a distinctive structure all year round but also mass flowers for seasonal change.
Wisley designer | Piet Oudolf
He tends to create very temporal landscapes that change and develop over time but with minimal labour requirements once everything is planted. “Many of the plants that he uses are wild species or varieties of those species chosen deliberately for their greater proportion of leaves to flowers” (Lord and Nelson, 2008, p. 55). Using wild species, tend to result in his landscapes and planting schemes flourishing in a wide range of soil types and climates. This gives him a blueprint for success wherever he works but it does mean that the majority of his designed landscapes have very similar characters however each landscape compensates for this with variety at a smaller scale.
Images. 2013. Piet Oudolf. [online] Available at: http://si.wsj.net/ public/resources/images/OD-AH078_OUDOLF_G_20110519174441.jpg [Accessed: 23 Sep 2013].
Piet Oudolf is a world famous planting designer from the Netherlands given “credit for catapulting the New Wave Perennial Planting” (Lord and Nelson, 2008, p. 55). Oudolf designs his schemes through interlocking blocks of planting that have bold large scale forms to make his landscapes much more wild and naturalistic with a fuller character. “In all of Piet Oudolf’s planting schemes, structure, texture, and shape take precedence over colour or height”(Lord and Nelson, 2008, p. 55)
Notably in this particular space in Wisley Oudolf uses a palette of plants mostly made up of perenial grasses that give a coherant character while you walk through but he uses many different varieties within the plant families he has chose to that there is an abundance of small scale variety for those who chose to notice it. This is most noticed in his use of Miscanthus varieties. Wisley in particular manages to find a good balance of formal and naturalistic character where the plants themselves have a wild nature as well as the informal shaped ‘blobs’ that each species is planted in but each ‘blob’ is clearly defined by the changing species so the space appears in control and has the appearance that it has been maintained much more intensely than it has been.

Kew Royal Botanical Gardens Information
“The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew was founded in 1759, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 “(Kew.org, 2013). It is a vast botanical gardens with multiple sub gardens with various themes designed by a multitude of different people over centuries and maintained by the staff. Depending on the preferences of the designers, royalty and most notably the culture of the day, the gardens have been altered and re designed with some areas having a distinct baroque character and others a more current naturalistic style. The particular site chosen in this section is a large border by the pond opposite Kew’s Glasshouse Marine Display because of the use of plants that can or cant tolerate changing water and soil moisture levels.
This border also has an arrangement of plant species that hide and reveal certain parts of the waters edge dictating access both physically and visually. At certain points the chosen plant varieties will try to draw focus away from the water down to ground level by the pathway while others will move the focus to a higher eye line creating a visual interaction with the water itself.
Planting area map Scale 1: 100 NB - shapes do NOT represent individual plants. purely spacial relationships between species. In this particular space the plants are planted very densely so each shape with have the maximum number of species that will fit in the space given their potential ultimate spread.
