Our accomplishments are made possible by your unwavering support as donors, as well as our dedicated leaders, N. Craig Bass, CEO, and newly named President, Ashley Conrad. As a part of our success, we want to highlight how we are building a

programming to tackle mental health disorders, address social determinants of health, and explore holistic approaches to treatment. The biggest highlight of the year is the expansion of our footprint into the Guilford County area. In September of 2019, we combined with Youth Focus. As a result, we were able to expand our residential program to include adolescents, add a comprehensive substance use treatment program along with intensive in-home, foster care, day treatments, and outpatient services. While the Guilford County-based behavioral health services were added to Alexander Youth Network, a new Youth Focus subsidiary houses the crisis shelter services and supportive housing programs as an affiliate of Alexander. With this combination, we have been able to build hope and a brighter future for children, teens, and young adults. We thank you for your dedication – it is your unwavering support that allows our organization the opportunity to continue to grow and reach more children every year. Because of you, we have been able to build hope for some of North Carolina’s most vulnerable children.
Lynn Crutchfield, President Alexander Children’s Foundation
BUILDING THE ALEXANDER FOOTPRINT The combination with Youth Focus
Alexander Youth Network is changing the way we provide mental and behavioral health services to meet the needs of more children and families across the state of North Carolina. Our infrastructure and improved support for our families continue to position Alexander as a leader in children and adolescent mental health. On September 1, Alexander Youth Network merged with Guilford County-based mental health provider, Youth Focus, to expand its comprehensive mental health services to children across the state. Youth Focus and Alexander Youth Network shared similarities in their organizational and service structure as well as a mutual commitment to quality treatment. Both organizations have a long history of ensuring that mental and behavioral health services are accessible to all North Carolina children and families regardless of ability to pay. “We have to ensure we’re getting kids into services when they need them, where they need them, and how they need them to achieve long-term healing,” said Alexander CEO, Craig Bass. “Combining with Youth Focus enables our agency to serve more children.”

With the combination of agencies, Youth Focus’ behavioral health programs became a part of the Alexander service array, while the crisis and transitional support services remained Youth Focus. Like our Charlotte affiliate, The Relatives, Youth Focus, has a 50year history of serving homeless youth and is building resilience for adolescents and teens. Youth Focus is the Safe Place agency in Guilford County and operates crisis and transitional support services for adolescents and young adults, including programs designed specifically to support pregnant or parenting young women. “Being a part of a state-wide network expands the safety net we can offer and allows us to better leverage resources on behalf of our community’s most vulnerable youth,” says Sarah Roethlinger, Youth Focus Executive Director. The merger has allowed Alexander to build upon an extensive array of services to offer more comprehensive programs to children and adolescents and extend our footprint into Guilford County while also serving more kids closer to home. As we move forward to meet the changing needs of our communities in North Carolina, we look forward to creating new strategies and innovations to our programs. While we continue to build our network throughout the state, we are dedicated to building hope for each child and family that seeks support at Alexander and our affiliates.
Youth Focus Crisis Shelter and Housing Programs
HEARTH TRANSITIONAL LIVING AND RAPID RE-HOUSING Youth Focus offers transitional housing to young adults, ages 18-21, who are experiencing homelessness in a supervised, independent living environment. Many youth will transition into the Rapid Re-Housing program which provides rent assistance for homeless youth ages 18-25. Both programs provide vocational and educational training, parental education services, independent living skills training, and other supports as needed.
ACT TOGETHER CRISIS CARE Youth Focus houses the only youth homeless and crisis shelter in Guilford and surrounding counties serving ages 11-17. Act Together provides temporary shelter and counseling services to youth who have left home without permission, have been forced to leave home, or are homeless for any other reason. Act Together is a Safe Place agency through National Safe Place with over 130 partner sites.
MATERNITY HOUSING My Sister Susan’s House offers supportive, residential housing and case management services to build independent living skills for homeless pregnant or parenting mothers ages 16 and 21.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY AND FAMILY Alexander helps Millie rebuild hope
Alexander is dedicated to much more than helping children heal. We are dedicated to helping children build connections and create support systems that will last long after their stay with us. Last year, Millie came to Alexander after being separated from her family, including her sister who was her only confidant. Both Millie and her sister experienced 12 years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse within their home. For Millie, her sister was her only support in escaping the traumas she experienced and the only positive relationship she had. Millie and her sister were rescued from their abusive home and began their different paths of healing - her sister in a temporary foster home and Millie at our psychiatric residential program. When Millie came to Alexander she had no one and longed to be reconnected with her sister. The staff at Alexander understood how difficult this transition was for her and quickly sought to fill the void in her life. It was a struggle for Millie, but over time, she began to find support in the staff at Alexander. While her therapists and counselors were significant relationships for Millie, her most meaningful relationships were with the amazing staff in the cafeteria. Each day during breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the cafeteria staff went above and beyond to make Millie feel welcome and a part of a family. Having never experienced a family dinner, meal times became something Millie really looked forward to each day. She wanted to sit with the other kids, her counselors, and the cafeteria staff just like a real family and enjoy her meals. Soon, she began to use meal times to open up and confide in others including counselors and the cafeteria staff. They became her role models and the parental figures she never had growing up. They even hosted a celebratory meal off-campus when Millie was set to transition to a therapeutic foster family and day treatment program.
Although she enjoyed her new family environment at Alexander, a connection with her sister was crucial to Millie’s healing journey. The program staff were able to link with her sister’s foster family and Millie heard her sister’s voice again. This emotional phone call allowed Millie to speak with her most important companion and provided reassurance in the connections and support systems that were placed around her. The positive influences during her stay at Alexander helped Millie prepare for a placement with a therapeutic foster care family and the eventual prospect of reuniting with her sister. What started as an isolated journey in healing became a community mission at Alexander to surround Millie with the compassion and confidence she needed. Through that compassion and confidence, Millie found the family she needed and regained hope of once again being reunited with her sister.
Alexander Youth Network respects the children and families who come to us for help. In order to maintain their anonymity, Alexander has changed the names of individuals and some identifying details such as physical properties, place of treatment and location.

BUILDING IMPACT AT ALEXANDER Alexander Children’s Foundation invests in our children
Since 2015, Alexander Children’s Foundation has raised over $7 million to make a life-changing impact for the kids at Alexander Youth Network. Whether to expand or enhance the programs offered to kids across North Carolina or to support the amazing staff who bring healing to these youth, this collective investment made by our community makes a difference in serving the kids who need Alexander the most. Over the past 5 years, the Foundation has been able to expand day treatment programs to new counties, provide training and supplies to support the implementation of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics in our programs, provide new vans to increase access to services, and promote pro-social activities that instill positive social interaction and personal growth for the kids we serve. The Foundation has also been actively involved in fostering a sense of community for our kids. Programs like Angel Network and Meal Buddies provide our kids with the support they need - whether it’s through in-kind donations to celebrate a holiday or birthday or the weekly lunch or dinner a kid spends with their buddy. The Foundation is committed to bolstering natural and family supports for our kids. The renovation of the Beth Jones Family Cottages allows families to stay on campus for free with their kids in a comforting, homelike environment. The ability to visit for free enables parents and family members to visit frequently aiding in a child’s healing.

What sets Alexander apart from other agencies is our talented staff. Their positive relationships with our kids are the cores of successful treatment. With Foundation dollars, we have supported our staff by stocking classrooms with academic resources and coping skills tools to help manage their classrooms. Staff have also attended training to learn enhanced therapeutic skills to ensure a safe environment. Eventually, the Foundation will support education assistance to give staff the opportunity to grow professionally and deepen the value they hold in our kids’ lives. The impact our staff and volunteers make is possible with the support of the community and family that Alexander has created. Through community outreach and relationship building, the Foundation has been able to establish new corporate partnerships, which have brought a new generation of stewards to Alexander. As these new individuals donate their time as volunteers, our kids are given the opportunity to build new relationships that create trust and growth. Our overview of 2019 is a snapshot of how the community has invested in the Foundation over the past five years. What isn’t measured is the exponential impact of these investments for our staff, our programs, and most importantly our kids and their families. Thank you for your gracious support of the Foundation. Together, we bring hope and healing to the kids of Alexander Youth Network.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF ALEXANDER Staff member Jerome Nelson’s connection to making a difference.
The staff at Alexander are the heart and soul of our programs. They are committed, dedicated, and the inspiration for our kids’ success. Jerome Nelson is the manager of South Providence Day Treatment, which serves youth ages 13-18 at South Providence High School. He shares his motivation for his work over the past five years and how “the power of connection” is key to helping kids heal.
Q: Can you describe how day treatment is a transitional program for the children at Alexander? A: We have the flexibility to create an academic classroom that works best for giving kids unique and different experiences while also being therapeutic. I try to do a lot of field trips and community outings because the more exposure kids have in a community setting, the more likely they are to integrate once they leave my program. Each successful interaction, whether it is bowling or a museum visit, gives them confidence and a better understanding of how to get along in life.
Q: How does Alexander collaborate with South Providence High School? A: Our kids feel part of the school community since we are based in a school and not a standalone program. We have such a great partnership with school administration which also helps our kids feel included. We participate in school programs so our kids don’t stand apart from the other classrooms, even though our program is different. It’s just another way for them to belong and feel connected.
Q: What motivates you on tough days?
Jerome grew up in Swansea, North Carolina and when he was 16, his parents fostered a 6-week-old infant who had come from an abusive home. She was eventually adopted by his family and was the first of many foster children to live with his family. Although his sister is fortunate to have found a loving and supportive home, Jerome witnessed the residual effects of her early childhood trauma. Seeing the effects of trauma first-hand shaped Jerome’s perception and created a deeper understanding of the challenges that many Alexander children have.
A: It’s the kids and the small daily successes that make this job so rewarding. We had a boy come to us at age 14 who had not been in school consistently for more than 5 years. When he started here, he was defiant and didn’t cooperate, but we wouldn’t give up on him. When he realized that we were here to support him, he began to participate and settle into class. Now he attends school regularly, in a traditional school setting, and most importantly, he wants to learn. This kid now wants to better himself and before attending our program, he never thought that was possible.
The positive influence that his family had in his sister’s life led him to study Human Services at Elon University and pursue an internship at the Boys and Girls Club. Jerome’s connection with struggling youth led him to a career that would allow him to make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Q. What makes Alexander different than other mental and behavioral health agencies?
10
A L E X A N D E R YO U T H N E T WO R K
A: Alexander creates relationships and connections from the beginning and allows clients to have involvement and ownership in their care. Students are involved in conversations or meetings with parents/caregivers about
their treatment, which is different from other agencies. That connection starts early to build trust and let each kid at Alexander know that we care about them.
been lucky enough to follow his progress, and as one of the few male role models in his life, I am able to see that he is now a junior at a traditional high school.
Q: What is one special connection you have had with a child at Alexander?
It turns out we have the same shoe size, so every few months, I find him and pass down a pair of my sneakers. I guess the shoes give me an excuse to check on him and to let him know I still care. I am so proud of this kid!
A: I’ve had one student join my class twice and have had the unique opportunity to watch him grow throughout those two placements. He was enrolled in my class at age 13 after being in multiple mental health settings since he was 9 years old. At the time, he was aggressive, destructive to property, and frequently ran away. A developmental delay also posed challenges for him academically. He was in our class for about a year and then returned to us at age 15 for another 4 months. BUILDING IMPACT Alexander Youth Network continues to build impact in the community. Alexander Youth Network continues to build impact throughout the state of North Carolina. Through our innovative programs, pilots, and partnerships, we have been able to provide comprehensive mental health treatment to children and support their families. In 2019, Alexander became the district partner for day treatment in Cumberland County and opened two new programs for children and adolescents grades K – 12. Our Charlotte team kick-started a school-based outpatient therapy program in eight Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools allowing us to provide treatment to even more children. We piloted an All-Inclusive Psychiatric Residential Program to provide additional support to the child and family while the child is in residential treatment. Through increased child and family therapy sessions and more frequent visits, children are able to heal and return to their families sooner. Additionally, our new Aftercare Specialist offers personalized support for families to help them maintain progress post-discharge.
98%
of clients and families shared that they were either satisfied or very satisfied with our services.
94%
of children in our residential program showed improvement in their mental health and well-being.
85%
of children in our residential program successfully transitioned to less restrictive housing.
88%
of children and adolescents treated in our Intensive In-Home and Multi-Systemic Therapy programs remained in school.
