“A well-developed sense of the absurd which keeps him from believing his hype” Describes film director Chris Weitz. Alexandra Hedley takes a closer look at adolescent icon Nicholas Hoult. At first glance, Nicholas Hoult comes across as the anonymous and fairly unnoticeable boy next door. The type you wouldn’t necessarily second glance at in the street. Yet when you look closer it is Hoult’s unconventional masculinity that makes him different. His cropped dark hair, defined jaw line and piercing blue eyes contrast against his pale skin. This gives him that British boyish charm lacking with many polished teen idols. His substance lies in his talent, career and impressive C.V. According to Chris Weitz, co-director of the film About A Boy, Hoult’s transformation from boy next door to star of the big screen are down to several reasons: “Arbitrarily, he turned from the shrimp who came up to my armpit to the hunk who towers above me, and while his looks have matured, they’ve remained inherently interesting and unconventional. On his own, though, he’s shown that the naturalness of his performance as a 12-year-old was not a fluke. He’s willing to do a tremendous amount of work to get a performance right.”

TOPMAN.COM

First spotted by sitting in the audience of a play with his mother, at the age of three, Hoult’s varied roles in film and TV have spurred his individuality and growth. His lasting fame has proved Hoult is not one of those teen stars whose fall from stardom seems to happen just as quickly as their rise to it. Since the release of the film ‘About A Boy’, Nicholas hasn’t just matured in the literal sense of the word. “Am I looking forward to being older? Not really. I’m not scared of growing up, but it just happens, doesn’t it?” He is almost unrecognisable as his geeky character Markus Brewer, the chubby boy with the bowl hair cut which he played in the film. Yet it was staring alongside Hugh Grant in this role, aged only 12 at the time that made Hoult’s face globally known.

Born Nicholas Caradoc Hoult, on December 7th 1989 in Berkshire, Hoult was the third of four children, who in the theatrical dynasty tradition have all followed acting as a career path. His aunt, Dame Anna Neagle, was a film and stage star of the 30’s. Still living at his family home in Wokingham with his parents Gwenis, a piano teacher and Roger, a pilot for British Airways, Hoult has been described as ‘beautifully raised’ by fashion designer Tom Ford. Hoult’s career path seemed mapped out from an early age. After attending Sylvia Young Theatre School, Nicholas’s acting debut was at the age of six in the film Intimate Relations in 1996. Yet it was the success of the film ‘About A Boy’ from which Hoult’s career really took off. “When you’re a kid actor, there’s always that fear of not being good enough and becoming one of those washed-up child actors, but I took the plunge, left school, and decided to go for it. I think the fact that my older brother James was an actor grounded me.” Most recognised for playing self-centred, egotistical Tony Stonem in British teen drama series SKIN’s, Hoult became known for being the hedonistic teen, placed in the centre of many controversial plot lines. The BAFTA winning TV series, aired on E4, followed a group of teenagers through college, exploring each of their individual stories. Nicholas, who was also in 6th form at the time of gaining the role, received a nomination for a Walkers Home Grown Talent award for his part. Playing his character for over two years he became the catalyst in story lines tackling issues involving sexuality, drug abuse and death. It was down to this role that Hoult gained a place within a new teen cult. He’s worked with Nicholas Cage, Michael Cane and Colin Firth to name a few, yet still appears very grounded and unassuming about it all. “It was very good of Tom Ford to let me be in it … when he had all those great actors involved” Nick was quoted as saying after being chosen by fashion designer and film producer Tom Ford to star in his directional film debut ‘A Single Man’. The film adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel, follows 24 hours in the life of British college professor George Falconer, played by Colin Firth. Falconer is grief stricken over the sudden death of his partner, Jim, eight months before, and is considering suicide. The events that take place over the course of that day, including his meeting with university student Kenny (Hoult)

allow George to rediscover the ability “to feel, rather than think”. According to Tom Ford “Nick performs in a way that seems effortless, subtle and honest. He has a maturity and depth that are remarkable.” The film which received a ten minute standing ovation at its Venice Film Festival premier in September 2009 saw Nicholas receive a BAFTA rising star nomination for his role as Kenny. It was after this Ford approached Hoult to appear in his Autumn Winter 2010/11 eye wear campaign. A huge triumph for Hoult within the fashion industry, the shoot saw Hoult replace model Jon Kortajarena as the face of Ford’s eye wear line. Shot with model Carolyn Murphy, the campaign allowed Nicholas to add model to his rapidly growing CV. Dressed impeccably in tailored suits and jackets with slicked back hair, the Hitchcock inspired shoot showed him in a completely new light, taking his style evolution to a whole new level. Yet in the eyes of even humble Hoult”It was just half a day with me and model Carolyn Murphy wearing sunglasses. Well, I wore sunglasses and Tom Ford clothes and she was pretty much naked. So it wasn’t a bad way to make money.” Since then Hoult’s career has rocketed. Making his mark on Hollywood he has managed not only to secure himself a string of big budget film roles, whilst also being rumoured to be dating his X MEN co-star Jennifer Lawrence. But true to form Hoult, not one to believe his own hype, still worries about his career “I still worry that I’m never going to get another job. Whenever a new film comes out, I always worry that it’s going to be the one people look at and go, ‘Don’t every hire him again.’” Yet it’s obvious Hoult really has nothing to worry about. The ‘cool young Englishman’ seems to have the industry eating out of the palm of his hand.

Playing Hank McCoy/The Beast in the film, Nicholas’ super hero role in X MEN:First Class had him named as one of the ‘Breakout Stars to Watch for 2011’ by MTV. His character, nerdy scientist by day blue furry mutant by night, saw him spend much of his time filming head to toe in blue fur, “People where stroking my fur on set without even realising it”. From model to superhero self-described as ‘gangly’ 6 foot 3 inches Hoult hasn’t always been so cool. The skeletons in his style cupboard include apparently having McFlys back catalogue on his iPod, forming a band with his friends, who covered Arctic Monkeys tracks and declaring Nando’s as his favourite restaurant. Recently described as fashion designer Tom Ford’s protégé, Nicholas Hoult is not only making his mark on the film industry. After securing third place in GQ’s 2011 Best Dressed Male List Nicholas himself is becoming a bona fide style icon in the making. Back in his SKIN’s days Hoult’s style was far different to what it is today. His wardrobe was made up of graphic tees, hoodies and trainers, all very reflective of his on screen character Tony. Now aged 22, he has undergone a style transformation. Without looking like he has tried too hard, Hoult pulls off his sharp

TOPMAN.COM

and refined look by keeping it youthful. He keeps his suits slim fitting and mixes up his formal looks by wearing a cravat as opposed to a tie or wearing a Harrington jacket over a shirt, and it’s here he has found his style niche. Following Hoult’s style lead is simple. By experimenting with prints or colours, adding your own quirky touches to outfits or selecting key seasonal pieces you can achieve the look without breaking the bank. The majority of Hoult’s day-to-day wardrobe comprises of dark denim, check shirts and leather jackets. Not one for in your face colours, he sticks to basic white tees and polo shirts in muted tones such as grey and navy. Overall Hoult is the perfect example of how a wardrobe styled on a selection of key items can still allow you to achieve a trend led look. We’ve picked the key pieces for you in our trend feature, making achieving your winter wardrobe effortless.

Currently filming ‘Warm Bodies’ a zombie romance, with Teresa Palmer, Hoult looks set to be a regular on the big screen for 2012. Expect to see him starring alongside Ewan McGregor as Jack in Jack the Giant Killer, a remake of the children’s fable, released on June 15th 2012, with ‘Warm Bodies’ hitting cinemas soon after in August 2012.

TREND The feeling is nautical but the look is not ‘regatta crisp’. With a nod to the dark and icy seas of Russia, chunky cable knits and even chunkier ‘bovver’ boots are the key for a moody take on sailor attire. Slim jeans in acid and snow washes are mixed with chunky knits and no frills pea coats, while blanket stripe shirts are worn with underwear inspired jersey pieces. A focused and serious look that’s distinctly soviet.

How to wear: FRAGRANCE

‘For Topman to be taken seriously in the toiletries arena it was crucial to make sure that we were able to produce a range of grooming products that were both affordable and luxurious at the same time.’ – Gordon Richardson, Design Director, Topman

TOPMAN are proud to announce the launch of our new fragrance and grooming range! The range, which has taken 5 years in the making, will be exclusively launched in Oxford Circus before being launched in TOPMAN, Selfridges and Boots stores nationwide. Co created by Agent Provocateur Parfum designer, Azzi Glasser, the range includes two signature frangraces. Our signature fragrance No.27 has alluring fine ingredient of clary sage, vetiver and cedarwood. Parfum No.16 is a revitalising fragrance that incorporates the finest ingredients of black pepper, amber and labdanum. “No.27 had to have ingredients that would be addictive and distinctive, we chose a wild accord of Clary sage, anise and Neroli with a magnetic character of Vetiver and nutmeg for the heart and added tenacity to the end composition with four notes of Oakmoss, Frankincense, Cedarwood and skin penetrated Musks.”

“No.16 gives a sense of cool fresh air on top using three key notes, Bergamot, Poivre and a Woody/ Ozone accent which is amplified by the heart and edgy base of Amber, Labdanum and Musks which leaves a unique signature that plays with body temperature.”

DON’T

“ apply fragrance to the face, particularly if it’s an Eau de Toilette as its high oil content will cause irritation.

DON’T ever apply a fragrance directly onto your clothing because not only will it not develop properly, you also risk damaging your favourite shirt, tie etc.

DON’T overload yourself. Your nose will adapt to your chosen smell and make it seem less potent. Also be aware of the words ‘intense’ and ’concentrate’ when connected with a fragrance, and approach these with caution.

DO

layer up. If you have a favourite fragrance invest in the multiple products from the same range (shave foam, balm, deodorant etc). Many body products are over fragranced, and sticking to one fragrance will prevent you from wearing a heady cocktail of competing smells.

DO spray onto a freshly bathed (and dried) body.

The range also includes: Body Spray Hair Putty Anti Perspirant Body Wash
