Deafness affects roughly 5% of the worlds population. That comes out to about 466 million people. Of those 466 million people, about 90% are born to hearing parents. Even with parents and family members learning sign language, there is still a level of disconnect and lack of communication that can occur between the deaf and hearing family members. Social isolation occurs when people are disconnected from the world around them. This can happen even if someone is physically surrounded by people. A lack of interaction can lead to various mental and physical health problems including depression and strokes.

Being Deaf or hard of hearing can be an isolating experience. creating a hospitality environment specifically designed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing will create opportunities for people to form stronger bonds. This environment will also connect Deaf people from all over the world.

Custom Vibration Pod

In an effort to bridge the connection between hearing and deaf family members, these custom pods give people the ability to either listen to music or feel the vibrations of it. There is both a single person and a two person pod. Both are fully ADA accessible and have a vibration device below the wood floor that converts music into vibrations.

Corporate Design Challenge

In corporate office design there are many things that need to be considered. Branding and user groups are two challenges that designers must research and fully understand when they begin the design process. With so many different generations in the work place and different working styles for each of them, corporate design requires creative thinking and a full understanding of the company and their work style.

Design Solution

In this project we selected a company, researched the company’s practices, and new trends in corporate office design. The company I chose to design for was Fitbit. Fitbit is a company that designs and produces wearable fitness technology. The company encourages their users and their employees to stay active and healthy all day long. I attempted to create an environment that would encourage this lifestyle. Because Fitbits track how many steps you take in a day I tried to make an office that encourages the employees to take as many steps as possible through the office. I also included a gym on the second level as one of the company’s main goals is “to empower and inspire you to live a healthier, more active life”.

Software Used Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Concept of Energy Energy comes in many forms. Whether it is potential or kinetic, energy has the ability to make things happen. Fitbit too gives people the ability to make things happen as their products inspire the users to move and be physical. Fitbit’s new office design will inspire its workers to be active, physical, and use their energy.

Challenge

When creating this restaurant, we were challenged to make it fit within an existing restaurant’s space. This space was located inside the Plus Hostel in Florence, Italy. The existing space was dated and the owners wanted a space that targeted their more youthful clientele. The restaurant also included a bar area that was open later than the restaurant. This was also the first space I designed with a budget.

Design Solution

In this group project, my partner and I were inspired by the idea of the human relationship with geometry as displayed in Leonardo DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man. We decided to play with different ways to integrate geometric forms into the space. We used the forms in many different forms, in the flooring, lighting and walls. We kept the space youthful with bright colors and use of natural materials. We titled the restaurant Concentric. The space offers a variety of seating options for various groups of people. To keep the bar open later than the restaurant, we kept it the first area that the user would walk into, thus allowing for the rest of the space to close and be undisturbed for the rest of the night. This space came out under budget.

Hostel Design Challenge

While studying abroad in Florence, Italy, we were tasked with redesigning the outdated Plus Hostel. In this project, we were to create a new reception area, with a computer room off the side of it, as well as three different bedroom styles: a single, a double, and a six person room. We were to update the hostel so that it would attract young travelers in visiting the beautiful city of Florence.

Axonometric double room

Design Solution

This project was a group project. My partner and I decided that in order to design best for a specific user, we should identify a common trait that they would all have. We decided that they all must love to discover new places if they are traveling, so we made our concept discovery. We decided to name each bed a different country’s name to encourage them to discover more about that country. Having stayed in hostels ourselves we were able to identify and solve some issues that we felt we had in the hostel setting, such as privacy and personal space. We also decided to keep the color pallet vibrant as the previous one was very dull and did not spark a sense of joy.

Healthcare Design Challenge

Design a hospital that encompasses an emergency department, urgent care, short term rehab with therapy areas and a pediatric unit for children with mobility challenges.

Design Solution

This project is a place where everyone will feel welcomed. From the first time the patient walks through the door, they will feel relaxed and peaceful through the use of a green wall and calming colors and wood tones. On the first floor are the emergency, urgent care, and digital imaging departments as well as the gift shop, resource space, and cafeteria. The emergency department is organized and centralized to maintain an efficient work flow. The second floor is the short term rehab with rehabilitation spaces that can be used by both in and outpatients. The residential area is kept very separate so that the people staying there can feel both a sense of privacy and less like they are in a hospital and more like a residence. The third floor is designed for pediatric patients. Keeping a more youthful and vibrant atmosphere though the use of materials. This space is also divided up into a place for living and a place for therapy. Because pediatric patients usually have their families there with them a majority of the time, there is a place for parents as well and two rooms for the families to stay overnight.

apartment design for a classmate

Residential Design Challenge In this project we practiced working with an actual client. We were pared up and designed an apartment for our classmate based on their design preferences. We also were required to budget out the project and practice professional communication.

Design Solution After spending time with my “client and looking at pictures of apartments and design styles that she liked I set off to finding the furnishings and fixtures that fit her style. I remained in contact with her throughout the whole project via email and sent her design options to pick from. Overall she was very happy with the result and appreciated my attention to detail with the design. I put together an electronic presentation for her so that she could access it whenever and wherever she wanted.

Classroom Layouts I assisted in this project by creating a variety of seating layouts for a classroom that would hold 28 students. The clients wanted to see how many different ways the same amount of chairs and tables can be laid out in the space. Below are some of the final results.
