Statement Many students come to the UW campus as non-drinkers and leave their freshman year rated as â&#x20AC;&#x153;high-risk drinkersâ&#x20AC;?. Much of this condition is brought on by outside pressures, such as class work load and the desire to find peers. Most awareness campaigns of this nature focus on scare tactics surrounding drinking. This statistic could drastically improve if awareness campaigns focused on alcohol alternative events instead.

Brief Design a public awareness campaign to address the increase in underage, high-risk drinking on the University of Wisconsin campus. Campaign Goals My campaign will help students become aware of alternativess to alcohol-related activities. The digital part of the campaign will focus on the entire campus and includes an app and social media accounts as well as an explanatory website. The print campaign will focus on residence halls which have the highest number of firstyear residents. Through this campaign, I aim to decrease the pressures surrounding the consumption of alcohol at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

ROY G. BIV (Jude Stewart) This book was used in order to select the color palette used throughout my thesis project. Infinite Icon (Gingko Press) Infinite Icon was used in the research behind the design of pictographs and their function. University Health Services (Jenny Rabas- Alcohol EDU) Utilizing research conducted using the mandatory AlcoholEDU programing, Mrs. Rabas explained that, in fact, the majority of students don’t rate as high-risk drinkers. The problem lies in the lack of focus put on the students who aren’t high-risk drinkers. University Housing (Assignment Office) When asked about their previous option of a SubstanceFree Community within housing, they said it was discontinued because they found that “while there are many students that choose not to partake in the consumption of alcohol and other drugs, they did not all necessarily want to reside in the same location”.

Adobe Creative Cloud (www.adobe.com) Adobe Creative Cloud was used for all design purposes. I primarily used Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Lightroom. Survey Monkey (www.surveymonkey.com) I used survey monkey to create, distribute and analyze my app importance survey. Visual Thesaurus (www.visualthesaurus.com) Visual Thesaurus was used in order to generate large lists of words for both name and pictograph generation.

Survey This survey was conducted in order to gage the want of an app such as Sidekick on the UW-Madison campus. Due to lack of sophomore response, the survey cannot be used. Sophomore response is important because of their proximity to underage alcohol consumption. Of the people who did answer, 75.31% said they would be Likely or Very Likely to use an app such as Sidekick. 1. Current Grade Level

Results Satisfied with the number of responses and by the overwhelming majority leaning towards the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sidekickâ&#x20AC;?. This will be the name of the app.

Brand Name Justification The name Sidekick comes from the app’s goal of being there when someone needs it. It isn’t necessarily an app you’d use every single day but as soon as you need some plans, Sidekick is there to help.

Design Process

Logo Inspiration These examples served as inspiration for my decision to create a logo for my mark. The simplicity of a single-word logo works well for recognition and the scale of mobile app purposes.

Categories This next list comprises of all the categories which will be included as a part of the category browsing for the app. Each event included in the app will be given a category.

Art Art will encapsulate any sort of exhibition. Recreation Recreation is full of activities that are readily available on a daily basis such as bowling or game rentals. Movies Movies will contain all the movie theaters in the area and any additional movie showings or film festivals. Academic Academic activities inclue those with the intent to educate such as museums or lectures. Performance Performance will include any sort of live event. Sports All athletic events will be found underneathe sports. Outdoors Outdoors includes any nature walks or equiment rentals with the goal of being outside. Free Free pulls from all of the categories to compile of list of events with no charge to everyone or specific groups.

Pictograph Initial Renderings I knew I wanted a specfic toolkit to pull elements from in order to draw each pictograph. These were two basic kits that I began with before I started my initial renderings. After I decided on these, I picked one category and started to create renderings based off of my toolkit and word lists.

Pictograph Initial Renderings These were my initial stabs at creating pictographs. I made a few based off a tool kit (backpacks and lightbulbs) and one using more organic lines (brains). Pictograph Final Guidelines After drawing the initial backpack, I revisited the toolkit and refined the drawing some more. Above is the final toolkit and below are the final dimensions. To the left is the final initial rendering. The dimensions of each pictograph will be within a square 1:1 ratio. Each pictograph will have a five point stroke weight and geometric shapes pulled directly from the given toolkit.

What Happened? As I was working through my thesis project, nothing seemed “right”. I felt as though the project was lacking a personal touch or any sort of personality. While there wasn’t much time left, I knew I needed to fix it. Here is what happened when I pushed myself beyond the computer and was able to self-evaluate rather than settle during the course of my senior project.

The “A-Ha!” Moment Doodles I often find myself inadvertently doodling at various points throughout the day. Honestly, it gives me something productive to do besides fidget. One day, I caught myself doodling the pictographs that had been racking my brain for weeks. This is when my “A-ha!” moment occurred. As I looked at my doodles, I realized that this is what my project was missing, a personal touch. I continued to doodle each one more intentionally. Both phases of my epiphany are seen on the next page. After these initial doodles, I worked on refining each one seperately until I found the sketch that looked the best to me.

Movies- Film Reel I chose a film reel because it is a universally recognizable instrument used for viewing movies.

Performance- Microphone A microphone was picked as it is used in some way for all formats of live performance.

Recreation- Smiley Face It was difficult to take a catch all category and depict it broadly. I pulled on the fun and casual nature of these events.

Art- Easel Art is another broad category that canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be narrowed down. I choose to show an artist easle to empahsize process and display.

Outdoors- Sun Outdoor activities also include a wide-range so rather than one activity, I chose to show an environment related item.

Free- Special I choose to treat free as though it was a deal with the intent to give it a more generic pictograph. For me, a star portrayed this intent.

Athletics-Basketball While not every sport is basketball, I believed the basketball was an easily identifiable image for sports of all kind.
