In a city where every bit of space is filled with people, it was magical to find places where I could be as alone as if I were resting upon a mountaintop -- when in reality, these places were no more than a few dozen feet below some of the busiest streets in the world.”

THE ISSUE OUR MODERN SOCIETY ESPOUSES A CULTURE IN WHICH THERE ARE A MILLION AND ONE WAYS TO WASTE SOMETHING. WE HAVE A SURPLUS IN ENERGY THAT COMES IN MANY FORMS. JUST TO NAME A FEW, THERE IS AN OVERPRODUCTION OF GOODS, WASTE HEAT FROM MACHINES, AND ABANDONED OR UNDERUTILIZED INFRASTRUCTURE. IN AN EFFICIENT AND WELL-OILED ECONOMY ONE WOULD THINK THAT THIS SURPLUS WOULD BE USED TO BENEFIT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING, BUT OFTENTIMES THIS IS NOT THE CASE. FOOD IS THROWN AWAY, ABANDONED BUILDINGS ARE LEFT TO ROT, AND SOCIETIES OVERLOOK ASSETS THEY ALREADY HAVE. THROUGHOUT HISTORY, HOWEVER UNSYSTEMATICALLY, PEOPLE HAVE FOUND WAYS TO DIP INTO THIS BANK OF EXCESS RESOURCES - FOR EXAMPLE A HOMELESS MAN TAKING SHELTER WITHIN AN ABANDONED TUNNEL, OR SLEEPING ON SUBWAY EXHAUST GRATES FOR WARMTH. ANECDOTAL STORIES OF PEOPLE EXPLOITING AN INEFFICIENT SYSTEM SCURRY THROUGH CONVERSATION, BUT CAN IT AMOUNT TO MORE? THIS THESIS TRIES TO IMAGINE CREATIVE WAYS IN WHICH THE ARCHITECT CAN SYSTEMATIZE SURPLUS ENERGY TO BENEFIT THE LAYMAN, AND IN TURN THE GREATER ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SPHERE.

TUNNELS IN PARTICULAR, CAN BE USED AS SYSTEMS TO HEAT OR COOL A NETWORK OF BUILDINGS ABOVE GROUND TO CREATE MORE SUSTAINABLE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS. IN ADDITION THE SYSTEM COULD ALSO HAVE BENEFICIAL SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS WITHIN SEGREGATED CITIES BY PROVIDING FLUID CONNECTIONS BETWEEN DIVIDED NEIGHBORHOODS. UNDERGROUND TUNNELS AND OTHER METRO INFRASTRUCTURE HAVE QUALITIES VERY COMPLIMENTARY TO AN INTEGRATION OF PASSIVE GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS. BEING ATLEAST 6 FEET BELOW THE EARTH’S SURFACE, THIS INFRASTRUCTURE IS ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EARTH’S MORE STABLE TEMPERATURES. THERE IS AN OFFSET IN SEASONAL TEMPERATURES DUE TO THE “THERMAL LAG” PRINCIPLE WHICH LEAVES THE EARTH COOLER IN SUMMER AND WARMER IN WINTER.

GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO UNIQUELY SPATIALIZE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE WHEN BROUGHT TO THE FOREFRONT OF DESIGN. THIS THESIS EXPERIMENTS WITH SEMI-TEMPERED FRAMING, SURFACES, AND PROGRAMS THAT PARTNER WITH UNDERGROUND SPACE TO IMPROVE STREET LIFE AND CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF AESTHETIC AND TEMPERATE COMFORT.

“There are 22.5 million veterans in the United States, and more than 2.5 million Americans have served our country in uniform since 2001. History suggests that our nations veterans will face formidible social and economic challenges throughout their post service life course.” -IVMF
PROGRAM THE SU_IVMF IS ASKING ARCHITECTS TO CONCEPTUALIZE, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT THE NEW NATIONAL VETERANS RESOURCE COMPLEX. THE NVRC IS INTENDED TO BE A MULTI-USE FACILITY THAT WILL HOUSE STATE OF THE ART VOCATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO ADVANCE THE ECOMONIC OPPORTUNITY OF THE VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES WHO CALL CENTRAL NEW YORK HOME. DESIGN CONCEPT THE INTENTION OF THIS BUILDING IS TO CREATE A BEAUTIFUL AND LIVELY ATMOSPHERE FOR VETERANS TO FORGE A COMMUNITY AMONG THEMSELVES, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR SOCIAL INTEGRATION BACK INTO AN ACADEMIC SETTING. SERVICES SUCH AS CAREER ADVISING, STUDY SPACES, CLASSROOMS, AND OFFICES, AS WELL AS RECREATIONAL FACILITES SUCH AS A GYMNASIUM AND POOL ARE ALL MADE ACCESSIBLE TO THE STUDENTS. AT THE HEART OF THE DESIGN IS A MEMORIAL SPACE SET TO PAY HOMAGE TO ALL THE CONTRIBUTIONS OUR VETERANS HAVE MADE TO THIS NATION.

{MEMORIAL SPACE} THE MEMORIAL SPACE IS INTENDED TO BE AN ACTIVE CENTER TO THE DESIGN THAT TAKES ON THE ROLE OF CONNECTOR AND PIVOT POINT BETWEEN THE REST OF THE PROGRAMMATIC SPACES. IT IS ON AXIS WITH THE SYRACUSE CAMPUS TO THE SOUTH AND A DENSE COMMERCIAL STREET (MARSHALL ST.) TO THE NORTH. DUE TO ITS POSITIONING AND PLACEMENT WITHIN THE BUILDING IT WILL INEVITABLY BE HIGHLY CIRCULATED. {C O - O P} AFFORDABLE HOUSING 2016 SPRING SEMESTER LOCATION EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN “To my fellow New Yorkers: We have a crisis of affordability on our hands. It’s a crisis in many ways built on New York City’s success... People from all over the world come to study, to work or to start a business here. And that success story has put pressure on our housing stock. Coupled with ever-rising economic inequality, it has created a painful reality where more and more New Yorkers are spending more and more to cover their housing costs, and entire neighborhoods have lost their affordability.”

BASIS FOR DESIGN IT IS IN THE MIDST OF NEW YORK CITY’S HOUSING CRISIS THAT THIS PROJECT IS SITUATED. THE AIM OF THE STUDIO WAS TO COMBINE CONCEPTS OF DESIGN, AFFORDABILITY, REAL ESTATE, AND CODE RESTRAINTS TO BRING TOGETHER A HOLISTIC UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT MEANS TO CONSTRUCT AN APARTMENT BUILDING IN NYC. THIS PARTICULAR BUILDING IS BASED ON A CO-OP MODEL OF HOUSING, WHICH WAS CHOSEN TO FACILITATE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY BETWEEN THE FAMILIES AND OTHER INHABITANTS RESIDING WITHIN. CAREFUL DESIGN CONSIDERATION WAS GIVEN TO THE INDIVIDUAL APARTMENT UNITS AS WELL AS THE OVERALL BUILDING DESIGN TO ALLOCATE SPACE AS EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE.

{INTERIOR COURTYARD} A VARIETY OF DUPLEX APARTMENT UNITS ARE ARRAYED AROUND A DYNAMIC INTERIOR COURTYARD. TWO LARGE SEMI-CIRCULAR SPACES SLICE UP THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING TO ALLOW LIGHT AND SPACE FOR INTERACTION AND NEIGHBORLY ACTIVITY. A FIGURE 8 SHAPED RAMP CONNECTS THE SHIFTING FLOOR PLATES OFF OF WHICH ARE THE ENTRANCES TO EACH APARTMENT. THE TRANSITORY SPACE BETWEEN THE RAMPS AND THE ENTRANCES ARE INTENDED TO BE FILLED WITH GARDENS, BENCHES, CONVERSATION AND EVERYTHING CONTRIBUTING TO A LIVELY AND PLEASANT ATMOSPHERE.

{P H O T O} STUDIO 2015 SPRING SEMESTER LOCATION FLORENCE, ITALY PROGRAM CREATE AN EXTENSION OF VILLA ROSSA, THE ACADEMIC BUILDING FOR SYRACUSE STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS. CAPITALIZE ON ONE SPECIFIC STAPLE OF THE ARTS AND CREATE A SPACE FOR CONTEMPLATION, PRODUCTION, INTERACTION, AND EXHIBITION. DESIGN CONCEPT THE PREMISE OF THE DESIGN IS FOUNDED UPON THE TRANSPARENCIES BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND THE NNERWORKINGS OF AN SLR CAMERA. HOW CAN YOU NEGOTIATE THESE TWO CONCEPTS TO SUCCESSFULLY DIRECT SUNLIGHT AND CREATE INTERESTING / FUNCTIONAL SPACES? THE BUILDING PLAYS WITH THE IDEA OF A HIGHLY VERSATILE COURTYARD CENTERED WITHIN THE SITE USED AS BOTH A PUBLIC GATHERING AND DYNAMIC PHOTOGRAPHY SPACE. PROGRAM MASSING THE SURROUNDING PROGRAM IS OFFSET FROM THE CENTRAL COURTYARD AND BROKEN DOWN INTO CIRCULATION, EXHIBITION, AND PROGRAM SPACES. A CIRCUMAMBULATORY CATWALK IS BUILT INTO THE FRAMEWORK OF THE OPERABLE WALLS, WHICH THEN LEAD INTO THE EXHIBITION ROOMS. VISITORS ARE ABLE TO WALK IN AND AROUND THE ENTIRETY OF THE COURTYARD. THE COURTYARD IS TO COME ACROSS AS A DELICATE MECHANISM INSERTED INTO THE HEART OF THE BUILDING. THE OFFSETTING LINES RADIATE OUTWARDS FROM THE CENTER TO SLICE AWAY THE SURROUNDING MASS OF THE BUILDING TO CREATE THE CIRCULATION.
{COURTYARD AS OPERABLE APERTURE}
THE COURTYARD IS MODELED AFTER THE MECHANICS OF AN APERTURE. THE SIDES MOVE UP, FLIP, AND ROTATE AT AN ANGLE TO FUNNEL LIGHT DOWN INTO THE GATHERING SPACE BELOW. STUDENTS AND VISITORS EXIST IN ISOLATION AND IN CONNECTION WITH THE REST OF THE BUILDING PROGRAM DEPENDING ON THE POSITION OF EACH “LOUVRE.”

DAYTONA STATE STUDENT CENTER CLIENT WANTS A LANDMARK BUILDING TO PUT A FACE TO THE COLLEGE. NEEDS TO PROVIDE SOME SORT OF MONUMENTALITY. TYPICAL ACADEMIC PROGRAM SPACES ARE NEEDED. I CONSTRUCTED PRESENTATION MODELS OUT OF BASS WOOD AND STRATHMORE. (fig. 1-3)
