Welcome
Welcome to the New Alexandra Theatre’s latest season brochure. This season we’re painting the town pink as we party with the all time classic musical Grease and the award-winning smash hit Legally Blonde, two of the best feel-good musicals around. The Alex continues its promise to bring you the very best in touring productions, starting in September, with David Essex’s All the Fun of the Fair, direct from the West End having just been nominated for Best Musical of 2010. Taking us into the beginning of next year we have the brand new tour of South Pacific which promises to be a stunning and definitive production of the show, then the chaotic Knights of the Round Table return with the hilarious Monty Python musical Spamalot. Following sensational reviews at the National Theatre, we’re delighted to present One Man, Two Guvnors with the wonderful James Corden. Directed by Nicholas Hytner and adapted by Richard Bean, The Guardian has proclaimed this production as ‘the funniest in the National’s history’. Be sure to book early as tickets are already selling fast. We also continue to bring you the hottest names in comedy including Reginald D Hunter, Russell Kane, Chris Addison and Omid Djalili to name but a few. If you would like more information on any of our shows please visit www.newalexandratheatre.co.uk and sign up to our online mailing list or you can join our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter, where you’ll be the first to get all our latest updates. ‘A splendid night’s entertainment comparing favourably with many professional companies’ the Stirrer
The New Alexandra Theatre is delighted to be producing our annual Stage Experience project for a ninth consecutive year! Bugsy Malone is a high-octane musical telling the story of gang warfare in 1920’s New York, where Fat Sam and Dandy Dan are battling for control of the streets. With Dandy Dan’s dreaded ‘splurge gun’ outwitting Fat Sam at every turn, Sam turns to Bugsy Malone – a part-time gangster of undeniable charm and charisma but whose attentions are continually diverted towards Hollywood wannabe Blousey Brown. Packed with gangsters and showgirls, Bugsy Malone careers through twists and turns galore to the final showdown at Fat Sam’s Grand Slam that will have audiences laughing with delight! Stage Experience is an intensive two week project that gives young people across the West Midlands the chance to train and perform in a professional theatre, under the guidance of a director, choreographer, musical director or behind the scenes with our technical team. Stage Experience brings out the absolute best in our region’s young performers in a production of the highest standard that you won’t want to miss!

‘BEST NEW WEST END MUSICAL 2010’ What’s On Stage Nomination
‘genuinely touchingwell worth a spin’ the daily telegraph
Following a record breaking West End season at the Garrick Theatre where it was nominated for Best New West End Musical 2010 by ‘What’s On Stage’, David Essex and Boogie Nights creator Jon Conway invite you on a rollercoaster ride of a musical, underscored by a helter-skelter of David Essex hits such as: Winter’s Tale, Hold Me Close, Gonna Make You A Star, Me And My Girl - Nightclubbing, Silver Dream Machine, and Rock On. Inspired by David’s album, All The Fun Of The Fair, David plays fun fair owner Levi Lee, recently widowed and father of a rebellious teenage son. Like father like son, they’ll take you for a ride. Danger and mysticism lurk in the future, as predicted by the gypsy fortune teller who is in love with Levi. Dodgems and motorbikes, crafty cons and candy floss, fairground horses and fights, along with romance and rock and roll mean you’re sure to go on a rollercoaster of a ride, but beware, all is not always fun at the fair! ‘It’s a great night out’ Simon Bates - Radio Legend www.allthefunofthefairmusical.com Photo by Paul Marc Mitchell

The funniest show in town a Reich laugh!
Outrageous, hilarious and a teeny bit controversial; Mel Brooks’ The Producers is the smash hit musical comedy that has taken Broadway and the West End by storm. Based on the 1968 cult film of the same name, The Producers became Broadway’s biggest ever hit, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards – including Best Musical and Original Score. The plot follows a washed-up producer who teams up with his timid, starry-eyed accountant to get rich quick by creating the most tasteless musical ever staged and then pocketing the investors’ cash when it folds on the first night. They are sure they have found the perfect show in ‘Springtime For Hitler’, a Nazi romp, and proceed to hire the worst cast they can find. But then things go hysterically and horribly wrong! With a kickline of sexy goose-stepping stormtroopers, a chorus of sex mad old ladies and with more limp wristed parodies than a gay fancy dress party, The Producers may offend but you’ll be laughing too hard to care! This is a rare opportunity to see one of the jewels in the crown of musical theatre. If you want an evening full of laughs and sidesplitting fun, join WBOS at the New Alexandra Theatre as we bring a little of Hitler’s Springtime to Birmingham. This amateur production is given by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York
