History of Alexandria Bay The history of Alexandria Bay is long and eventful. From the Iroquois Indians to present day, Alexandria Bay and the 1000 Islands region has not let a moment pass it by. Alexandria Bay and its surrounding areas have always been a location noted for its beauty, vast resources, and spiritual being. Long before Europeans settled the area, the Iroquois and Algonquin Indians spent their summer months fishing and hunting here. Lore has it that Manitou said to the Indians: “I will give you paradise, if you stop fighting”. According to legend, the Indians did not stop fighting so Manitou put paradise into a bag and threw it into the horizon. The bag broke apart and a thousand pieces fell down into the St. Lawrence River, creating the Thousand Islands.

After the War of 1812, Colonel Elisha Camp, received ownership of the American Islands. In 1845, he in turn sold the islands to Azariah Walton for the sum of $3000. The land purchased extended from the northwest part of Wellesley Island and all the islands from Round Island in Clayton to Morristown 35 miles away. Walton joined Andrew Cornwall and together brought Alexandria Bay to a prominent position in the upcoming decades. The first island to be sold was “Manhattan Island” for the sum of $40. Shortly after the Civil War, the popularity of the Islands increased with the improved transportation system. Wealthy sportsmen and gentlemen from leading US cities inquired into purchasing islands from private use. The social era of Alexandria Bay began when George Pullman invited General Grant (then running for President of the United States) to visit his Island home. The press traveling with General Grant wrote articles in the leading US city papers that sparked an interest that resulted in the explosion of recreation in the Alexandria Bay area. Among the list of wealthy gentlemen who purchased islands are Dr. JG Holland, editor of Scribner’s magazine (also started the first library in Alexandria Bay; now the site of the Chamber of Commerce building); Abraham Abraham & Nathan Straus, head of Macy’s Department store; George Pullman of the Pullman sleeping car fame; Charles Emery, an American tobacco executive; Commodore Frederick Bourne, Singer Sewing Machine Co; and George Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf Hotel.

During the American Revolution, James LeRay, better known as James Donation LeRay du Chaumont, provided goods and services to the American forces. In the early 1800’s, James LeRay, purchased most of what is today Jefferson County. Many of its small towns, rivers, and lakes are named after members of his immediate family.

The 18th Amendment to the Constitution (Prohibition) created a lucrative business in the 1000 Islands area. While little information is available, stories have been handed down over the generations regarding local captains who knew the St. Lawrence River and its many inlets, making the trip between the US and Canadian borders to bring back sacks full of alcohol. If the law got to close, the sacks were easy to throw over the side. Divers today who visit the area, can still find bottles at the bottom of the St. Lawrence River. Today, Alexandria Bay and the 1000 Islands Region are an international destination for a wide variety of tourists. Because we are not located on a super highway, Alexandria Bay and the surrounding area have maintained their original quaint characteristics. Whether you are looking for family activities, world class fishing, romantic evenings, top-notch dive sites, or just a little relaxation, Alexandria Bay is the place to be!

The Love Story surrounding the castle is a sad one. George Boldt was building the castle as a tribute to his wife Louise. While being built, Louise suddenly died and the craftsmen on the island received a cable to stop all work. The castle was never completed. After years of neglect, vandalism, and the elements, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority purchased the historic castle and has done major renovations to show the grandeur that was to be. Today, Boldt Castle has become the #1 attraction in the 1000 Islands Region and is a must to see!

History of Singer Castle Bluff Island, also known as Dark Island and Lone Star, was sold to Frederick Gilbert Bourne of New York City by William Henry Harison, his wife Mary Francis, and Noble Wymberly Harison, for $5000 on December 3, 1902. The island due west of Chippewa Bay and northwest of Cedar Island was said to contain 15 acres, more or less. Frederick Bourne commissioned Ernest Flagg, a New York City architect, to design a castle hunting lodge on Dark Island. Bourne stipulated that the structure was not to imitate any existing castle. Flagg had recently read Woodstock by Sir Walter Scott which was set in “The Towers”, a hunting lodge castle used by royalty near Woodstock, England. Flagg incorporated descriptions of the book’s castle, torn down in the early 1700’s to design Bourne’s castle - complete with towers, turrets, secret passageways, and underground tunnel, and even a turret dungeon. Construction began in the spring of 1903 and involved 100 masons. Granite was quarried from Oak Island and sandstone came from the quarry in Hammond. The castle was completed and first used in the fall of 1905. The castle contains 28 rooms, 10 fireplaces and 8 bathrooms as well as 2 boathouses, 2 ice houses, a skiff house, and a bath house. There are passageways throughout the castle and each passageway entrance is hidden or blended in the walls and has a mechanical and an electrical means of opening.

The family used the castle for several weeks each year in the summer and fall. Emma Bourne died in 1916 and a son, Howard, died in 1918. Mr. Bourne died in 1919, leaving an estate of $43 million to his seven surviving children, who could not agree on its distribution. On June 12, 1919, Dark Island and all its buildings were sold for $389,000 to Marjorie Bourne and her sister May Bourne Strassburger. Marjorie was given lifetime use of the island by the Strassburgers in 1921. Marjorie married Alexander Thayer in December 1926. In 1928 Marjorie had a separate squash court built for her husband’s birthday and added a sports therapy room and a bedroom on the third floor. The wooden piazza below it was converted to stone to support the new wing. On December 27, 1961, Marjorie Thayer sold Dark Island to LaSalle Military Academy for less than $100. In 1965, LaSalle had no use for Dark Island and sold it on April 17, 1965 to the Harold Martin Evangelistic Society for $35,000. The Martins changed the name of the island and castle to Jorstadt and held religious services and retreats from May to October. In the 1980’s, Mrs. Martin’s health kept her from the island and the ministry was carried on by Harvey & Flo Jones. In 2002, the island was sold to Dark Island Tours. The property, renamed Singer Castle on Dark Island, still has many original furnishings and is open May to October for guided tours, weddings, and overnight stays in the Royal Suite.

1000 Islands Wine Trail New York Wine Trails have long been a source of social enjoyment for many tourists since the early 1980’s. Now there is reason to celebrate wine in the Thousand Islands Region. The newly created Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail, which encompasses Jefferson County will begin its fourth season in 2011. Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail consists of five wineries, one grape nursery, and nineteen vineyards. The wineries on the wine trail begins with Yellow Barn Winery outside Sackets Harbor, NY; Coyote Moon in Clayton, NY, Thousand Islands Winery in Alexandria Bay, NY, Otter Creek Winery in Philadelphia, NY, and ends with Seaway Cold Hardy Grapes & Vineyard in Evans Mills, NY.

Each of the winery’s are located on historic farms and have their own vineyards. Wine Trail guests are encouraged to take tours of each of the wineries and sample some of their locally produced wines. The wine trail is 78 miles long and traverses throughout many beautiful sections of Jefferson County and makes a terrific day trip from any of the area’s hotels. The trail is marked by green grape cluster signs. The trail uses NY Routes, 3, 180, 12, 26, 11, and 342. Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail is planning to host many events throughout the year. Alexandria Bay more than a summer destination

You know Alexandria Bay for its summer events, but did you know that we offer several events during the winter months also? In October, the Thousand Islands Winery offers an Oktoberfest, Coyote Moon Vineyards offers fall events, there are several downtown merchants as well as craft fairs in December for your Holiday shopping, ice fishing derbies galore during January & February, and of course the Annual Polar Bear Dip in February to benefit River Hospital. There is also snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, bumper cars on ice, ice skating, hockey tournaments, and so much more…. The newest winter event for Alexandria Bay is the….

Labatt’s-1000 Islands Pond Hockey Tournament February 2012 saw the 1st Annual Labatt’s-1000 Islands Pond Hockey Tournament take place on Otter Creek. Alexandria Bay residents grew up playing hockey on ponds & creeks and the Chamber decided to bring back the old fashioned way of playing hockey. There are few rules, smaller goals, and good old rivalry on the ice. The teams are placed in age categories with a shoot out at the end to see who will take home the illustrious trophy and grand prize. The February 2013 weekend will be February 8-10, 2013 with more ponds, more players, and fun to be had by all. Spectators will enjoy the atmosphere with DJ, bon fire, and great hockey action. “Meet Me In The Bay” ….for spectacular winter events.
