BRIEF HISTORY OF LITERATURE Literature is essentially a group of works of words in order to convey something, usually bound in books after writing was invented. Literature these days usually involves either poetry or prose but can also refer to spoken narratives or other forms of storytelling and conveying themes. The earliest form of literature was of course orally, not many of those still remain as they often were never written down. The Odyssey and the Illiad are two of the most famous examples of oral narrative preserved in writing; they were written down by Homer around 800 BC and had previously been only told orally. Other famous examples are Ramayana and Mahabharta, two very famous epic poems from India. While most early poems and stories were retellings of things that actually happened, or supposedly happened it wasn’t until 1021 that the first novel appeared, purely fictional written to entertain. It was written by a Japanese noblewoman named Murasaki Shikibu who wrote the Tale of Genji which to this day is called the first novel ever written.
