Emporiou Square Distinguished with honors

(National competion “Emporiou Square at Serres) Emporiou square and its surrounding area (and the area in its immediate vicinity) are a typical example of public urban space in the contemporary Greek cities. It was formed over the last decades through a continuous collation of unresolved problems and potentials, more or less latent. The current state of the study area is indicative of the need for a contemporary, integrated design approach that will eliminate the current pathogenetic factors and highlight its hidden dynamics. It will restore its integrity as a public space that can be essentially assimilated in everyday life by the citizens of Serres The present state of the study area is indicative of the need for a contemporary, integrated design approach that will eliminate the current pathogenetic factors while highlighting its hidden dynamics, by restoring its integrity as a public space that can be essentially assimilated in everyday life by the citizens of Serres. The proposal aims

5

to newly transform the Emporiou square into what it really represents, through a dual convention; the reconstruction of the public space and the decrystallization of an easily legible urban identity. In accordance to the above convention, the proposal is not analyzed in the form of a conventional design process, but rather as a flexible strategy, (outlined by, consisting of ) a series of interrelated decisions - measures, that (although they are being developed) while (they are) being developed as a unified design approach/process (designing tool set), they still maintain their individual independence/integrity. The proposed measures are based on (were developed in accordance to)

6

functionality, aesthetics, originality and the ability for adaptable application. They are grouped, in regards of their partial role, into four clusters: •Recovery of public space by pedestrians - citizens •Redesign of urban furniture as a key element of the public space's identity. •Bioclimatic enhancement and ecological balance •Utilization of technological means - Highlighting the digital dimension of public space The square is formed as a continuous surface, a dynamic streamline pavement pattern that enhances(encourages) unrestricted pedestrian

movement and gathering, not only in its entirety, but from one area to another also. A series of traffic regulations and arrangements are aimed at decongesting vehicle traffic within the square and limiting the impact that the presence of vehicles have on an area where pedestrians now have right of way. The decisions regarding the location of the entrance and the exit of the underground car park, as well as the relocation of the local bus terminal to an area outside the Emporiou square, were made in accordance to the previous logic. The street furniture act as the prime medium that shapes the particular (unique) identity of the public space, while allowing the users to familiarize themselves with it. Key elements of the urban furniture design are the shades in the form of automatically opening and closing inverted umbrellas, which give flexibility in the protection of small or larger spaces, enabling the hosting of various activities. Their characteristic form (derives from) finds reference not only to the domed structures and arcs of the demolished municipal market of Serres that dominated the square, but in the significant Ottoman monuments that lay in the proximity of Emporiou square also. There are two types of benches, both morphologically related to the streamline pavement pattern, that can meet the needs of different uses and activities. At the same time, the local bus stops and lighting poles complement the common design language of the urban furniture. The relocation and redesign of the

National Resistance monument into a sculpture - landmark was of particular significance as it transformed it into a reference point for everyday life in the urban square. A series of proposals contribute to the bioclimatic enhancement and ecological balance in the urban space of the square. To this end, both the automatically opening/closing umbrellas and the large number of the planted deciduous trees, are crucial, as they possess the ability to adapt to the seasonal changes in the microclimate. Furthermore, the arrangement of the trees is done in a way that limits the traffic noise and channels fresh air to the square. Special attention was given to the natural drainage of stormwater through the planted open surfaces and the use of permeable paving materials, and the collection and storage of rainwater with the reversed umbrellas. The floor is constructed with materials with decreased thermal capacity and increased water permeability. The bioclimatic enhancement is farther achieved by a construction for the facades of the surrounding buildings that combines vertical plantings and awnings. The proposed design is completed through a series of measures that utilize modern technology and highlight the digital dimension of public space. The installation of the robotic mechanism in the underground parking and the photovoltaic panels on the roof of the city transport stops aims at balancing the energy demands of the public space. At the same

9

•  Suggested rail for existing buildings. time a portal for the Emporiou square will provide internet access to users, while forming a new interactive relationship between citizens and the public space. This is further achieved through the transformation of blind building facades into digital projection surfaces and the management of the umbrellas' lighting colour (in relation) according to the users' movement on the site during the night. To summarize, the proposal's goal is to overcome the narrow boundaries of the specific site, through an integrated planning approach. Therefore it treats Emporiou square as a test field on which a range of measures and decisions, that can be easily adapt to other areas, are being applied. Their successful implementation can function as a guide for a contemporary view of the public space of the city of Serres. Housing, buildings and renovations In Thessaloniki

In this chapter there are some of my works that have been done at the residential designing field. All of them are about apartments in the area of Thessaloniki and have been completed while working at our office ArchistudioLP. Apartment buildings is vital part of our cities. They are the most popular type of residences in Greece. Their main characteristic is that they are developed in relative small plots and in high density areas. At our office we were fortunate to work with many apartment buildings. Here are some of our completed projects.

13

Apartment Building in the centre of Thessaloniki. (2014) This project is about an apartment building in the centre of Thessaloniki at Petrou Sindika street. It is located in a mixed use area of the city. This project has been done for a local developer. Main concern of our client was to produce a wide gamma of residencies to the real estate market. So, we combined different types of uses such as commercial and residential. And different types of flats from small one bedroom flats, up to a luxury 2 story flat with 4 bedroom and stunning views. At the ground floor it was decided to create a store, strictly connected with the commercial street (Petrou Sindika). Furthermore, at the upper stories the flats where developed. The project know is at the process of getting the building permission.

Apartment Building in Kalamaria (2015) This project is about a 7-storey apartment building in Kalamariai. Kalamaria is a housing area in the suburbs of Thessaloniki it considers to be one of the most luxury areas of Thessaloniki. The plot is located near the local center. It hosts 9 apartments south facing apartments with stunning views. Know is in the process of getting the building permission.

15

Apartment Building in Triandria (2012) This project is about an apartment building in Triandria in the suburbs of Thessaloniki. It is a 6-storey building that consists of 8 apartments. Horizontal lines and structures are cleverly used to reduce the size of the building. Furthermore, contemporary design and materials are used together with natural materials. All those elements work together seamlessly and complete the image of a building of its time.

Our main concern when we design a renovation of an apartment is to fulfill the residents needs ( economy, sustainability, space etc). Thus we always design together with our clients. Using tools such as models, 3d

Nursing home for elderly

In the suburbs of Thessaloniki

At this project at ArchistudioLP (our office) We were asked to design a nursing home for elderly with the capacity of nearly 40 rooms (about 100 residents). The site of this project was located near Filiro which is in the suburbs of Thessaloniki. The site's most important advantage is its location-orientation. It is on a south facing slope with a magnificent view to the city of Thessaloniki. Our first intention was to create a peaceful shelter for those people, with a huge variety of spaces, each and every one of them with different qualities (light, views, scale etc) having always in mind the sustainability and energy efficiency of our building. Those people were to be living there twenty-four seven and we felt great responsibility the moment we realized that.

•  South facade 21

•  East garden

22

So one of the first decision that was made, was to take advantage of the city view as much as possible. That's why we located all the bedrooms at the south facade of our building so that all the residents could share the magnificent view, while enjoying the benefits of having a south facing opening at their bedrooms (sunny environment plus low running cost). We split the rooms into 4 equal groups (10 bedrooms ) along 2 sequential levels in order to comply

with the building regulations and help the stuff at the functionality of the nursing center. Every bedroom sector of the building has its own small living area which is equipped with a small kitchen. At the point that those 4 sectors met we decided to locate all the facilities and offices of the center in order to give fast access to the members of the personnel to any of the residents sector. Moreover, vital role at the residents life play

the dinning and leisure area which is located at the east side of the building and it is connected to the east garden. The main purpose of these areas is to help the residents to socialize with each other. Minimalistic design, simple lines and a wide variety of spaces defines our design and above all fulfill the residents needs.

(competion “Kozani X4) In a search for a solution that rises to the specific demands of Kozani, the proposed approach seeks to redesign a group of typical city blocks into one new building block group that highlights the fundamental structural components of the urban fabric - the dynamic development of the city around one historic central core and the adaptation to the terrain. The selected city blocks are enclosed by Mitropoliti Fotiou street, Diogenus street, Megdani street, Tranta street, and Chimarras street, and are part of the historic centre. The irregularity of the access network hinders the continuity inside the old city, imposing a dif- ferent approach to that used when dealing with

the typical building block cross. The proposal is based on the activation of potential urban spaces - open spaces, unconstructed plots - of each new building block group. These urban cores, act as joints in the proposed pedestrian path network for the old city. The design logic, from analysis to concept idea and final proposal, is organized in layers. Besides the main characteristics - high building density, inadequate open spaces, vehicles domination over pedestrians - a series of urban typologies can be identified in the new city block. A wide local street with ground floor trade shops (Chimarras), the main street that runs throughout the building block group (Zalogu), the narrower side streets grouped in two types of open spaces, and a big open space, forming by a group of adjacent smaller open spaces. The specific characteristics of these urban spaces, along with the microclimatic conditions (solar insolation, solar access) of the building blocks group, are used in order to identify spaces with high

•  Street view. urban load (social and environmental). These spaces comprise the backbone of the concept idea. The high load urban cores, along with the buildings’ entrances, designate a series of urban flows, which in combination with a layer of linear lines that follow the terrain’s elevation, create a dynamic matrix that incorporates

the variations of the different urban spaces. Based on its function and mate- rial existence, the urban fabric is divided into five individual layers. The first one consists of the unified, for pedestrians and vehicles, movement surface. Vehicles are allowed on the main street that runs throughout the building block group but all side street access to the main street is blocked. These

side streets lead to small underground robotic parking systems, that are ideal for narrow urban spaces. The second layer consists of the activity areas mainly paved with compressed ground, while the third and fourth layer consist of the planting areas and the sittings. The organization of the proposal delivers a series of intervention typologies that can be

used as a tool in order to apply the idea of unifying groups of building blocks at the area of the historical center as a whole. On roads with ground floor commercial uses and sufficient amplitude, the proposed dynamic grid forms small resting areas, which when repeated along either side they separate pedestrian from vehicle movement. Furthermore, the absence of parked vehicles inside the new building block group allows the creation of mixed traffic communal streets with pedestrian priority, which are characterized by plateaus on either side of the buildings’ entrances, that can be used as semi-private courtyards by the residents of each building. The other two focus on the utilization of the potential open spaces. In areas where larger terraces appear, the integration of successive segments of the grid, creates recreational activity spaces and spaces for holding neighborhood cultural

events. The grid’s joints form slots capable of bearing the necessary urban equipment for the specific events. Finally, the grid’s lines on the existing open spaces take the form of terraces, bridging the elevation differences amongst them, while providing small gardens for recreation and cultivation to the residents of the surrounding buildings. Use of permeable materials on the activity surfaces, channeling of the rainwater runoff to the plant- ing areas, construction of rain gardens, and use of plant species native to the greater surrounding area of West and Central Macedonia, are some of the construction choices ensuring the optimal bioclimatic performance of the design. The main goal of the proposal is the development of an integrated and flexible set of design tools for the new building block group for Kozani.

Even though their application is limited to a specific urban area, the methodology behind their development renders them capable to adapt to the various features of the whole urban area.

Urban streams

Regenerating nature in the urban field This project was designed at 2013 for a national competition organized by the municipality of Thessaoniki. The idea of a perceptional regeneration of the stream that used to pass through the area of intervention lies at the epicenter of the following proposition. The area selected consists of a series of small parks and free spaces that penetrate the building lots located from the junction of K. Karamanli avenue and Mpotsari street to the one of Mitropoulou and Solonos street, in the eastern part of the city of Thessaloniki.

•  Urban plaza.

B

The space encountered suffers from fragmentation and discontinuity caused by the excessive presence of car and the insufficient previous planning attempts that do not meet contemporary urban needs. Free space, formed up by the imprint of the former stream on the urban tissue of the city, is considered as a part of a potential, green route that traverses the major road axes of the area, descending from the city forest to the seaside. The existing vegetation, evident of the presence of the stream in the past, forms the

backbone of the whole at- tempt to restore its image in the mind of the people. The proposition is articulated in space through five layers, each one in reference to an element of a natural stream. The main pedestrian route proposed weaves through the blocks of flats and the existing trees simulating the water flow of a stream. The benches and wooden decks that outline the route are related to the stones and wooden trunks found on the banks. A layer of different types of low vegetation follow the pedestrian way recalling the plants that grow

up along a stream while existing and proposed trees group together as the woodland found close to the streamside. Finally the activity areas of the intervention are located on both sides of the route made out of compressed ground reminding of the soil deposits on the sides of the water flow. All five layers work together through space providing the necessary continuity and at the same time interact with existing elements in a variety of ways in order to present the city dweller with different space experiences. The intervention is divided according to

space experience and function into three major parts: an , a garden and an activity park, yet not loosing its consistency as a whole.

38

The urban plaza

The proximity of space with the busy avenue of K. Karamanli and Mpotsari street along with the opening found at the first part the intervention offer tha chance for the creation of an urban plaza that could have an impact on the wider city area. The plaza takes form through the controversy of two surfaces, a paved one characterized by the water jet elements under the existing plane trees and

a more “natural” one made out of compressed ground with the presence of vegetation playing an important role. The plantation of new trees works in a unifying way between the two surfaces, signifying the heart of the plaza as a small urban forest that takes the visitor away from the crowded roads.

B

The garden

As space moves on through the blocks of flats the intervention takes the form of a linear garden along the main route. Nature plays an important role on the experience of this space as wide planting beds are offering a variety of colours and textures that capture the eye, inviting for rest and relaxation.

C

The activity park

The third and last part of the intervention is devoted to the activity of the local habitants, emphasizing on the younger ages. Two playgrounds are created for younger and older children in a sense of playing with the terrain that offers the chance for a more three dimen- sional treatment of the existing flat space. At the end of the activity park, as the space gets wider again, a group of differently leveled terraces aims to gather the younger people of the area around an open, centered terrain suitable for different kinds of events. The whole spatial approach is accompanied by a number of green solutions that solidify the presence and regen- eration of nature in the urban field. Careful planning and material choice adapt to the existing vegetation and help in the transition

Plantations intend to promote local biodiversity while vertical gardens take advantage of the presence of “blind” walls in the area as a means of an aesthetic and microclimatic upgrade. Water presence evokes the memory of the former stream and the same time cools space during the hot summer months.

All put together, the whole intervention consists an ambitious attempt to bring the dweller of the contemporary city back in touch with free space and the element of nature that is so much needed.
