research

into my subconscious

I

first set about, attempting to find the perfect formula to breaking through the boundaries, and creating, inventing, something new, something different, something never seen before. I researched to the point where the idea became so much a part of my soul, that it began to enter my subconscious. The eternal search for the Holy Grail. The splinter in the back of your mind. Cutting deeper, with no ailment in sight. It was the shapes... these rules. The defining laws that our Universe must abide by. There was no force known to man, that could exceed past these limits. Or so I thought... What is it? To be different? How can you be different, when everything around us, at any scale - physical, timely - are repetitions, cycles? The answer lies in the head space that accepts the complete existence of these laws. And to the naked eye, they appear parallel. But you must step back and realise the power you hold, to bend them, to have them yield with your needs and force. Abuse them to the point where they can no longer hold true to themselves. And that, is when you get something truly beautiful. Something that no amount of physics could ever prove to be true, but is there in front of you regardless. This is the world I now see. Where our rules have enveloped each other and spat them back out, tangled in each other’s limits. And it is this world, that I have been waiting, for so long, to reveal to you.

Some called it a monster.

The mother of all experiments gone wrong. They ran away from it, screaming for help. But they ran too soon. They didn’t understand. This monster, it’s not a monster. Look at it; it’s a thing of beauty. It tears down bricks and steel with its globular form, and in its wake, it leaves all things we’d forgotten; new life, a regeneration. The natural world we had long overrun...

I’d heard of a place deep underground, where the

further in you went, the less abled you became. It was a machine world, masked by nature, and living through it. It worked in a peculiar way, for it subdued your senses to the point where it left you slow and blind. All of your senses gone, eliminated. Well, almost all of them. For whatever reason I can only imagine, your sense of hearing still remained... How I longed to visit such a place. Other colleagues of mine warned against it, saying people go mad in there. On the contrary; I felt this was an opportunity for a re-awakened imagination. To go back to our roots and make sense of the world which we take for granted everyday, using and relying on only one sense. What a fantastic and indeed, terrfying world to live in. To hear the stories nature has been trying desperately to tell for so long now... I woke the next morning, before the sun had overcome the moon, suitcase in hand, on my way to unravel this new world, and somehow, find a way to make sense of it all.

All senses functioning normally. Brain activity pattern reads steady and normal

Both sense of hearing and touch still in tact. Notable change in brain activity pattern. High peaks at beginning, due to confusion and panic. Reduces lower than prior soundscape results. Test Subject appears to be in a sedated state.

...The machines it appeared, recorded data from not just

on the site, but even 4km down the road. It played upon an ambiguous reality, confusing the test subject even more. The landscape suddenly became a flurry of sounds. Birds over head, and the sound of waves crashing into the cliffsides; all normal. But police sirens, the clinking of coffee cups, the sound of a cow calling out; these sounds, were by no means expected. What world was this person in? But I suppose, if you can hear it, all around you, then it must exist... mustn’t it?

Speciman remained planted in ground close to surface, but in deep sections only

Metallic features.

Speciman secured firmly along vertical walls only, and directly connected to Speciman 4.

Metallic features. Appeared to receive sound in the direct environment and replayed recordings based on air quality; high external frequency levels resulted in low noise production.

Appeared to receive sound from both direct and external environments. Relayed information to Speciman 1 for playing. Firmly secure in ground. Tendrils wrapped around body. Pulsated and glowed orange whenever high noise levels were detected.

Produced long, thick tendrils at at the mouth in direct contact with the air. These tendrils reduced noise levels, acting as padding. They also received signals and recorded noises within the vicinity.

SPECIMAN 4 (off-cut) advanced growth rapid // observation notes: Upon dissection, speciman continued to pulsate. We singled out a off-cut and kept it in an incubator. We began a time lapse at t=0. Cut-off initially showed no signs of growth, but continued to pulsate. At 3 hours, off-cut began to generate snakelike tendrils along it’s surface. They appeared to be filled with a liquid and pulsated more violently than the rest of the surface. At t=2, tendrils appeared to relax on growth. We returned to the site and placed off-cuts into the ground. At t=14, new specimens had begun to grow. It appeared off-cuts grew from mitosis and was the source for all other specimen on site. The ‘heart‘ so to speak. //

I

had never seen a design quite like it. It was constrained and restricted, but oh so alive, organic, free. A machine born under the earth we walk on, with electricty injected into it. It became alive, and grew. It did not rely on people, and what a wonderful thing that is. Sometimes we rely too much on the human race to provide the essential qualities in a site; that of dynamicism. But this design, the very nature of it, was to sustain itself. To grow and change without human intervention. It broke the rules, and began to define us. As it grew, it’s form dictated function. We could not bend it to our will, but simply had to make use of what we had. Our team struggled; was this a place we wanted to introduce to the world? A place we had no control over, and didn’t quite understand how it worked. What powered it? What was its energy source? What if people began to harvest the energy for themselves? We went through rigorous research to answer our many questions. All I know, was this place - this machine board born from the earth itself - was alive regardless of our existence. We were no longer in charge.

SPECIMAN 1 Machinetic Organ // observation notes: ^ Produces tendrils as it grows. Tendrils are spongey on the outside, but firm and strong. They do not appear to grow in a certain sequence. ^ Tendrils react to touch and air temperature, glowing a light gold in warmer weather and a dull blue in colder weather. ^ Main structural element is heart-like in shape and action. Energy is produced as it pulsates. Stronger energy expelled in larger specimen.

SPECIMAN 2 Organic Microchip // observation notes: ^ Solid body, as hard as metal. Hollow inside. from here, straight solid arms conducting electricity grow. ^ These arms carry electrical pulses, and light up their surrounding environment with an eerie pink glow. NOTE* Arms are safe to touch externally. ^ Tendrils grow from the solid body, and wrap around the solid, straight arms. They appear to act as insulators, and regulate the temperature around it. ^ Further studies suggested the tendrils were connected all over the site, as they vibrated in unison. They could also sense heat on the opposite end of the site, strengthening the ieda of a linked system.

research & reflection

into past case studies

It is often good to reflect back upon the studies that first inspired you to undertake a specific research. To understand how different your train of thought has become and indeed evolved.

My thoughts are ever changing, and sometimes they come full circle, right back to the beginning. I will not lie, cycles were the branches from which my ever-aching splinters derived. I tried so desperately to find an escape route that would always have me moving forward. But in my frustrations, I found it impossible to do. My actions alone, I do not doubt, have already been attempted by someone else in some other time frame. So an acceptance needed to be made. And this acceptance was that under the circumstance of the rules we have been given, cycles are an essential part to the structure of the universe. I hope by now, you have been able to understand that it is possible to bend rules and limits, and through these transformations, while cycles do still exist, they have now become something new and active.

So I will take you back now, to the beginning, and at the same

time, bring you to the end
