ACHIEVEMENTS
ALEX ARSENEAU I am a landscape and urban designer with a passion for solving problems through quality design and improving the places where we live, work, and play every day. Themes in my work include combining ecological habitat with programmatic use, transforming public gathering spaces, and strengthening urban connections. I believe designers have a responsibility not only to the client we serve but also to the well-being of our society at large. Here is some of my recent work, which spans five years and contains both academic and professional projects.

OLENTANGY PARKWAY
Columbus, OH | MKSK Studios Role: Rendering, 3D Modeling, Concept Design, Book Layout Olentangy Parkway was MKSK’s presentation in collaboration with Tom Leader Studio for the future of the Olentangy River corridor in Columbus. It would be a dynamic 21st century corridor layered in connectivity, transportation, ecology, open space, cultural, and neighborhood systems. My contribution to the project included the majority of the graphics and book layouts shown on this page and the design of the complete streetscapes in the perspective section graphics. The presentation was given to a crowd that included the mayor of Columbus and the president of Ohio State, and later published in a book.

RIVER CONNECTIONS
While the Olentangy Trail is well-used today, the capacity can be doubled by building trails on both banks and connecting them with pedestrian and bike bridges. By opening more east/ west crossings, access is provided to the river, its new trails, and the waterfront parks that are waiting to be revitalized.

LAWRENCEBURG CIVIC PLAZA
Lawrenceburg, IN | MKSK Studios Role: Rendering, Concept Design, Planting Design, 3D Modeling Lawrenceburg is a town in southeast Indiana on the Ohio River just west of Cincinnati with a population of 5,042 residents and a historic downtown core. The goal of this project was the creation of a vibrant public space that tells the story of Lawrenceburg, connects peoplet to community heritage and cultural influences, and enhances visitor’s perception of the community. The public space offers space for performances and festivals, public art, dining, outdoor classes, a splash pad, and for visitors to passively enjoy.
16
17
The site began as just two surface parking lots bisected by a road and located in the center of this historic “main street USA” town. It already had strong edges with local businesses and the potential for more redevelopment as well. In the summer, the lots were already being temporarily turned into public spaces for a concert series.

REVIVING OUR RIPARIAN CORE
Student Design Competition | Olentangy River Vision Plan Jury Grand Prize Winner The Drake Union is an aging riverfront facility on Ohio State’s campus that blocks access the river on a major campus spine. Its removal opens up the possibility to reintroduce some of the resilient ecological processes that were present before the area was developed. In Reviving Our Riparian Core, the effective riparian edge is maximized with the introduction of a new constructed wetland at a higher elevation that the river. Fed by a pump at the northern edge along with stormwater from adjacent campus, this wetland expands the Olentangy habitat corridor and filters out biomass while opening up new recreational and research opportunities. In addition to the revival of the healthy riparian corridor, the site would be revived as an active campus hub. Easy access from the Lincoln Tower Fields via the OSU Framework 2.0 realignment of Cannon Drive/the levy opens up the site as an accessible focal point on axis with the Oval. Amenities include a new ‘River Union’ (student org meeting center/café with a green roof and lounge deck), a wetland amphitheater able to withstand flooding, and an expanded Olentangy Trail network.

WATERMAN CAMPUS
Columbus, OH | Studio Autumn 2018 Placemaking at an Urban Research Farm Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory is a 261 acre piece of land on the Ohio State University Columbus campus. Uniquely situated in an urban context, it currently contains an active dairy farm, agricultural research plots and support buildings, a honeybee lab, turf grass research plots and support buildings, two small streams, and a woodlot. Our task was to reimagine Waterman and give the college steering committee some ideas for its possible future. We closely collaborated with university leaders, operations staff, and active researchers through interviews and presentations. Group collaborators on this project were John Bargiel and Megan Nerici.

Waterman today functions as separate program facilities that have very little interaction and are only accessible by car. We wanted to create a collaborative, active area by giving it the feel of a college campus, centered around ecology.

GATEWAY TO THE CUYAHOGA
Cleveland, OH | Studio Spring 2017 Fish Habitat and Rowing Park on Cuyahoga River 102’
The focus of this studio was the creation of both a constructed fish habitat and public amenity along the channelized Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland.
Event Lawn
Viewed from above, the habitat sets up a parti inspired by water’s movement and the site’s rowing program. The long bioswale and paved path “arms” can be thought of as ripples frozen in time. They are pulled along by the gear shaped habitat’s imaginary rotation as the river current flows through.
0’
10
This parti sets up different zones of lawn and program between the curved arms, including four raised wedges that provide event seating and sunbathing opportunities. Within the arms themselves, people and stormwater are brought towards the fish habitat, and the visitor feels as though they’ve passed out of the urban fabric and through the Gateway to the Cuyahoga.

DRUMLIN_BIOREACTOR_FIELD
Hamilton County, OH | Studio Spring 2019 *In Progress Artificial Mountain Proposal Landfills are not generally something we celebrate, or even want to talk about. However, in the flat landscape of the midwest, their massive forms have the potential to introduce fascinating new ecologies, microclimates, and visitor experiences. Landfills represent an as-yet-unimagined design opportunity. Drumlin_Bioreactor_Field is a proposed 300-acre addition to Mount Rumpke outside Cincinnati. It’s an artificial mountain that acts as a reckoning to our culture of excessive consumption and waste and a rich ecological habitat.
