Celebrating Tour de France and part of the Yorkshire Festival
Aria of Canaries is the latest art and sound installation from artist Richard Johnson and musician and composer Amanda Johnson of Kidology Arts. Installed at the National Coal Mining Museum for England the project is funded by Arts Council England and is part of the Yorkshire Festival which celebrates the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire. Aria of Canaries is inspired by the story of the humble canary and its importance and significance in the coal mining industry of Yorkshire.
On offer for a limited time are two artist-led workshops providing the opportunity for 5 schools to take part in the project. Both workshops explore the culture of the Canary Islands and are on offer on a first come first served basis. Richard or Amanda will come into school to run the workshops that will last a full day and engage up to 60 pupils. The children will work with the artist in small groups of 15 for 1 hour each and the cost to schools would be just £275.
Rock Flock
Inspired by the petroglyphs and rock art of the Canary Islands, participants in this workshop will make a large piece of temporary land art. The art would take the form of a flock of canaries and will be made from yellow painted rocks. Photographs of the finished work will be posted on the canary Twitter feed for participants to download. Dawn in the Laurisilva
Laurisilva are forests of laurel trees that cover much of La Gomera’s mountain slopes. In this fun music performance workshop participants will recreate the beautiful sound of a dawn chorus in the Laurisilva. They will use instruments that mimic bird song, have a go at Silbo Gomero or use percussion instruments to mimic rainfall. Cost to school Duration Number of Pupils
