Connecting to Kansas University The cellular forms and structure maintain a pure white geometry while the facade of the station draws upon the two primary school colors of nearby Kansas University, red and blue.

Putting it All Together Constructing the cells takes a solid, reinforced concrete foundation with hollow steel columns held together by steel plates and bolts.

Emphasis on the Arts The Salina Crafts Center focuses on glasswork, metalwork, and pottery. The build emphasis the important spaces in the building such as the library, studios, hall, and gallery by having higher ceilings than the circulation and support spaces. The studios are then slightly rotated off-grid to bring attention to the importance of these spaces.

Pottery Studio Each studio has direct access to natural light and a half enclosed courtyard for students to enjoy the outdoors by having the ability to socialize or bring work out of the studios.

A Restored North Branch Chicago River The current North Branch section of the Chicago River is cut off from residents by industrial sites, warehouses, and concrete. As industry evolved after WWII, the area became under used or abandoned, making the river useless. This redevelopment proposal aims to revitalize the river by bringing residents and office workers back to the water front.

Chicago Rapid Transit As American cities continue to rebuild and repopulate their urban centers, the demand for public transit continues to grow. Rail is sorely needed, such as metros and lightrails, but is enormously expensive and time consuming to construct. A new technology, the Personal Rapid Transit, aims to cut costs drastically while serving quantities of people comparable to metros. This redevelopment project introduces the PRT to Chicago as a catalyst for growth.

Planning the Arts District Urban Rules

Urban Rules go hand in hand with zoning regulations, requiring new construction to follow new rules that improve the Arts District. These rules enhance walkability, beauty, diversity, and the environment.

Anti-Boring Walls A wall of the same building must undulate 5’< after 100 ft of the same face either by width, length, or height. The new face must be a minimum of 30 ft, unless the building ends.

Walkability Development with street frontage needs to enact at least two walkability features, while busier streets need to maintain at least three.

Replanting Earth 25% of the footprint taken by a new building must be replanted elsewhere on the property, such as the rooftops, terraces, or on the ground instead of paved surfaces.

Affordable Housing A minimum of 1/3 of new housing units must be affordable housing to ensure that the district continues to have a diverse population.

Height Max Maximum height is within 30% of the tallest building in a 500 ft radius, unless tallest is three stories or below, then five is maximum.

Defined Block All blocks will be defined by public space, either through a street, sidewalk, park, etc.

Preservation Existing structures are banned from being razed unless a convincing argument is in place to prove existing structures violate urban rules and cannot be retrofitted to fit.

Street Art A minimum of 1/3 of the opaque spaces on a facade facing the street must be a form of streetart.

New Zoning The proposed re-zoning of the Arts District prohibits uses like heavy industry and distrubtion while encouraging mixed uses, residential, and creative businesses, such as galleries and design professions.
