highrise workshop contextual and innovative design award

The urban and ideological context of an E.U. highrise in the European District of Brussels imposed a great design challenge. The design team attempted to address the symbolic weight of the building by underlining and inserting the European Urban values within the building’s envelope. Europe’s answer to the highrise has to bear all the characteristics and contradictions that make Europe unique. Diversity (Different Identities), interconnectivity (Unity), the accessibility and openness of the European streets and the rational European spirit have to be portrayed in the form and the construction of the highrise. Beginning from the ground level, the public routes connecting existing streets where connected within the floor plan creating a central public square in the middle of the ground plan. To make a dynamic building, diverse and active throughout the day and night, residential and hotel program is suggested, while the suggested office program has been reduced due to the less square meters that the new open office concepts require. Shifting horizontally the program’s blocks gives the possibility for diversity within the building, while keeping all floor plans the same. The shifts also give a possibility for exposed green terraces, which become places for interaction between the different programs. The designed structure concept allowed these gardens to be column free. Vertical Transportation/Structural cores connect the public spaces in different levels, with a varying level of privacy. In the lower part of the building smaller blocks give the possibility for more terraces, while forming a lighter lower part, which allows light in the public spaces near ground level. The smaller blocks have multifunctional program, with the ability to transform from smaller meeting rooms to larger exposition areas due to revolving doors. Flexible solutions like the above and provision for future program changes can contribute in the longevity of the building. The design won the prize for most contextual and innovative design by Stichting Hoogbouw. The workshop was sponsored by TU Delft, Arup, Besix, Stichting Hoogbouw, Techniplan, TVVL, UNETO-VNI, Stabiplan. n

VIRTUAL REALITY CAMPUS

Design/Concept by Alexandros Christodoulou, Veronika Heidegger Visualisations/Renders by Alexandros Christodoulou

This concept was developed for a student competition of TU Delft, searching the most inspiring idea on the future of univesities. Our group imagined a “virtual reality” campus for where people are connected to sensors and wear special 3D glasses experiencing, e-labs, e-lectures and e-field trips. The idea was qualified to the final second stage along with two others, and was presented during the introduction day of TU Delft in September 2012 in the university’s Aula. The virtual reality campus won the competition, through a public vote and a jury decision.

The orientation of the water and thw building blocks is based on the south-west wind direction, to enhance natural circulation flow in the water.

Residential and Office Buildings’ green roofs as well as Parking Rain Shelters participate in the rain water infiltration process, since water was given as a first design priority for this assignment

MEMBRANE FACADE SYSTEM

ETFE building facade system with adaptive insulation Design/Concept by Alexandros Christodoulou, Veronika Heidegger Visualisations/Renders by Alexandros Christodoulou Handsketch, Photo by Veronika Heidegger Graph/Table by Chvatal & Corvazo, Journal of Building Performance. Assignment Tutor: H. R. Schipper

Adaptive Insulation can be found in nature and in clothing, but not yet in the building envelope. This membrane facade concept tries to approach the aforementioned goal, taking advantage of the thermal insulation properties of thin air layers.

With ten air cavity compartments between the ETFE membranes we can achieve a U-value of 0.27 for winter. In summer the air is pumped out of the membranes and the U-value increases to 0.47.

A structural grid is added behind the membrane facade to: • Reduce horizontal deflections of the membranes • Facilitate the support of openings (windows, doors) • Enhance burglar safety Other advantages: • Free Form Facade Possibilities • Innovative facade aesthetics • Less facade connection details • Decreased facade weight. • Reduced transportation costs • User participation

This differentiation is especially critical in • residential buildings, in places where high summer temperatures occur for an extensive period of time. • offices, where the internal heat load might reach significantly high levels.

The Sustainable Music Stage was an interdisciplinary design project of TU Delft’s Energy Club. Mechanical Engineering students ran models to simulate the performance of the stage while the design group attempted to integrate the stage’s different functions. The Sustainable Music Stage is set to be constructed in the coming academic year.

INTEGRATED The concept FUNCTIONS of the autonomous box can be ideal for a quick addition of functions in large spaces of existing buildings (old factories etc.). Power and water supply can be concentrated in one corner of the floor plans. The prefabricated rooms on wheels could be moved to the power supply corner to be charged whenever their battery or water supply runs low. The awareness of energy and water consumption figures is a positive side effect beyond from the simple and quick function addition
