LIVEABLE CATCHMENT CITYOF WATER, PEOPLE & KNOWLEDGE

T

he late 20th century was an age of the Thick-2D, multiuse groundscapes that extends into the podiums of buildings and dive beneath the skin of the land. The rise of landscape urbanism, driven by the need to create built spaces and infrastructure that serve both a functional as well as a programmatic role, has created visions of the city where structures twist and turn as they fold and flow over roads, buildings and landscape. The aim of the project is to extend the coast of Singapore in an innovative way and to challenge Singapore urban planning norms. This is done mainly by proposing high density living in the new city. The current new town model in Singapore has an over emphasis on residential areas. Due to this, the space is not effectively used as on most days, residents leave the area to go to work, thus leaving much of the land in these new towns under utilised.

As a studio, it was collectively agreed upon that the project should aim to address future issues that Singapore would face. One of these issues is the supply of waterVin ISingapore. S I O NBy 2061, when Singapore's second water agreement with Malaysia ends, Singapore has to be completely self sufficient, with local catchements, "NEWater" (singaporean government to ensure water catchment for the future), and L I V E A B L E C AT C H M E N T C I T Y: desalination meeting all of the country's water demands. MIXED USE BUILDING - DESIGN STUDIO IV COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC SPACE

This project aims to develop an architectonic proposal at downtown of Monterrey, Mexico to promote vertical housing and public spaces in the city, as Monterrey lacks these type of spaces.

"Macroplaza", located at downtown of the city of Monterrey

The building contains several sections which are: hotel, apartments, amenities, multipurpose room, parking lot for tenants, community center, large exhibition hall, soccer field and a shopping center.

The project is divided into two terrains that are separated by a distance of 150m, although both of are in the same street. One of these 2 projects must include a community center, a​shopping area, a hotel and condominiums, while the other project should contain a housing for high-end clients.

Moreover a soccer-field is proposed in order to promote exercise and to create a greater interest to users. The community center will count with art workshops, showrooms, foreign language classes, danceclasses, children day care, etc.

The building is enveloped with aluminum panels that allow the air to flow through the building so the rooms and the rest of the spaces can be ventilated efficiently and reducing the dependency of air conditioning systems (anyway the rooms will be prepared for extreme weather conditions with mini-split air conditioning systems). The floorplan is round-shaped, so users can enjoy multiple landscape views to all corners of the city.

This is the proposal of the second ground that is 150m away, which the target market of this tower is for people with higher economic status. This proposal has many limitations as the terrain is quite small and narrow to become a big project, so that the two side walls are completely solid. On the first floor there is a commercial shop, which would be a bookstore to encourage reading in the Mexican culture. The pedestrian entrance is on one side which would be used by visitors, or tenants themselves in case they dont own a car, but users have an alternative entrance for their cars through a big gate with a security guard. The building is split into two sections, each floor consisting of two apartments of 150m2, making spaces quite large for a private condominium. In the frontal façade, there is a green-wall to cover the parking lot and demonstrates the carness for the environment and promoting awareness of our planet. To avoid ventilation problems there is an interior courtyard to create an outdoor bucket. On the other hand, the balconies are on the frontal façade, stood on one side to prevent heat from the sun and can spread a little shadow from a volume that is extruded on the right side of the balcony.

NOCTURNAL LIBRARY - DESIGN STUDIO V WORKING & STUDYING SPACES + PUBLIC SPACES

The main objective of this project is to develop an architectonic proposal of a public library that can only be used during the night. The location of the building would be quite near from the University of Tecnol贸gico de Monterrey (one of the biggest universities of the city), which helps regenerate the area and make students take advantage of this place as well as the people who lives around the proposal project.

Main purposes -Natural ventilation -Private-spaces (balconies) -Views towards the moon (opening at the top of the building) -Services module at the center of the building -Exterior modulation of Reinforced concrete -Lighting going from the inside out (park lamp, preventing insecurity)

-To count with more private personal spaces for users to admire and appreciate the serenity of the night - Avoid having spaces that are too comfortable as people are more likely to fall asleep as they would work/ read during the night -Modulation of exterior (reinforced concrete) was designed to have a separation of 30cm so the air can be penetrated with more pressure and help the building can be ventilated naturally instead of rely completely on A.C. -Placing the building at the center of the park so it would never give it's back to any building/house surrounding the park.

The form was generated by the prevailing winds from the east creating some openings at the ends in form of a "V" rotated 90째, so the air can enter the building with more power and help the wind flows within the building, besides that nights are more fresh instead of wind during daylight. A

At the roof there is an opening in an oval shape, which increases its radius as the levels get lower, this was mainly because users could see the moon during the night. 3

It is important the interaction with the outside, making a connection in the cafeteria, which contains a mirror of water to help cool the air entering the building, along with vegetation, which fulfills and optimizes the same function. 3

The drinkable water needs for the city of Monterrey in 1909 were satisfied through an underground cistern called "El Tanque", this project tries to make this historical facts into a city landmark. Today this facility is no longer in use and the idea is to develop a proposal for the municipal government ("Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey") offices using the same infrastructure. The project is developed from a central courtyard, which organizes the work areas around and creates a particular focus on the dome, making the dome the main space and access of the project.

Ground Floor The proposal keeps the original structure and maintains a pattern that does not break with the existing modulation. The design is implemented based on an elliptical opening at the middle that has a perimeter ramp, to expose the tank and to define a primary access. Resulting in the distribution of work rectangular areas and a radial transition view that focuses the dome at all time.

The project uses water as a fundamental element in the design, creating a historical path and showing a clear link between the present and the past of the initial function of the tank. This is incorporated by water mirrors and perimetral openings of the building, to obtain reflections of natural lighting and ventilation, generating temperature comfort as well as a good climate. The landscape design intent is to generate a path that directs the viewer in an attractive way into the tank. The concept was inspired by the original 1909 design, emerges from small halls and amphitheaters that end towards the dome, keeping it as a visual priority for both the upper and lower level of the project. Endemic vegetation is proposed as the "anacahuitas" and other species that require minimum maintenance and characterize the state of Nuevo Le贸n. A system of rainwater collection and storage is considered, optimizing the resources of "Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey".
