Latest Trends

Reconnect with nature. Bring the outside in. Be like Snow White this season as homes are taken over with little woodland critters. Alex Dyer looks at the upcoming trends for the last few months of 2013 and the start of the New Year.

Monochrome Classic monochrome is still a favourite with homes across the country. It is timeless, modern and clean and is still a strong contender for the winter season and well into 2014. Black and white creates a clean and inviting look that is perfect for any space. To give your monochrome a new twist, play around with textures and shades - anything from the blackest of blacks to a light grey to the purest of whites. This variety will liven up your home in no time, while keeping it on trend for little cost.

Gold If black and white isn’t your thing, splash around some gold to revitalise your home. It’s perfect for the Christmas and New Year season and adds a touch of glamour to any home no matter what room it is used in. This colour can also be added through the use of brass objects: from lamps, to banisters, to bedframes. The warmth of the brass is welcoming and seems to glow throughout the room. Why not try something as simple as a brass ornament, or perhaps a gold figurine or vase.

Country cottages and wood cabins with log fires all paint a picture of a quaint little hideaway in the heart of the forest. Already popular in the autumn months, this trend isn’t ending soon, following into winter months. Lightwood paired with earthy fabrics and knitted accessories create a cosy living space, perfect for a kitchen, bedroom or living room. Squirrels, deer and owls are three of the most popular animals popping up in homes around the country.

The Most Important Christmas Centerpiece

Christmas Guide

Decorating the Christmas Tree is a fun activity for all of the family, but just how do you get that perfect tree? Home Sweet Home provides some pointers.

1. Choose your tree wisely! Whether your prefer real or artificial, your tree is your canvas so choose a well-shaped and symmetrical one. Avoid placing it near a source of heat or ventilation, especially if it’s real. If you’re setting up a fake tree and shaping the branches yourself, try to bend them so that you don’t have any space between each layer of foliage.

2. Next come the lights. The lights should be the first thing you put on the tree. This may be the most labour-intensive part, but it is definitely worth it and makes the tree look magical. String the lights from the bottom to the top. Space them evenly and ensure the wires are hidden by pushing them partly into the branches.

3. Remember: colours matter. Pick a colour scheme; preferably one that doesn’t clash with the room the tree is in. Sticking to one or two colours will make your tree look cohesive and sophisticated. Warm and classic Christmas colours such as browns, gold’s and reds will accent the green tree and create a sophisticated look. Other colour schemes such as blue, purple and silvers work well together.

The ornaments are the most delicate and moveable decoration and should be added last. Work from the bottom to the top and distribute them evenly. If you have pets or children you may want to avoid placing valuable ornaments near the bottom. Instead place them in stand-out areas such as the middle or near the top.

Pretty in Purple Purple. It is definitely our favourite colour this season and this bedroom is Home Sweet Home’s favourite room. The purple tones reflect against the crisp white bedding and the long drapes gives this room an elegant feel and allow the light to shine through; perfect if you are used to early mornings.

You can accessorise with this room too by adding silvers, pale pinks and creams that create a feminine touch to the bedroom but also adding a modern twist with the choice of lighting and accessories. You may also want to add mirrored wardrobes into this room to create the illusion of more space. A soft cream carpet creates that cosy feeling for those cold winter evenings.

Ten Minutes With a Vintage Shop Owner

Home & Glory sell vintage baubles and decorations like these, which are made of vintage glass and fabrics.

Are you a lover of all things vintage? Could you browse for antiques all day? Home Sweet Home chat to Samantha Doughty, the owner of Home & Glory in Cambridgeshire. How long has Home & Glory been open? My Shop Home & Glory has been open since May. I spent years trying to decide whether opening a vintage shop was actually a good business venture or just something I fantasied about doing, so I finally decided to just do it!

Where do you find your inspiration? I get my inspiration from family and friends and after my husband was diagnosed with liver and lung disease, it gave me that extra push to give it a go. I have always had a good eye for art and design; I can always see things differently and look outside the box. If someone gives me a piece of old reclaimed wood I’ll cut out a shape from it, like an angel or stocking, add a few rusty bells and wire, paint it and you have a one-off folk art gift. I love taking something old and turning it into something you can have in your house or hang outside. Nothing is bin worthy.

We’re now thinking about Christmas stock and I’ve decided to use vintage shopping baskets to do a hamper filled with mulled wine, Christmas puddings and some vintage goodies. For example, I might do a tea for two and add a vintage teapot, Twinning’s tea, two cups and saucers or make a basket with an old mixing bowl, wooden spoon and a luxury cake mix. We’re also sourcing glass baubles, which look fab in an old jar. Christmas is going to be

Interviews With

Designer for the Stars Lynsey Rowe was lucky enough to be able to transform the home that belonged to the former singer Amy Winehouse. We spoke to her shortly after she graduated.

What made you want to study interior design?

Well I have always been interested in interior design, and when my parents started property developing around 10 years ago, it enabled me to get an insight into all aspects of property renovation. The idea of transforming a mundane space into something spectacular just excited me.

What have you been working on now?

I’ve currently been working as a bespoke soft furnishing designer, which I love doing.

Do you have a favourite room to design?

I would have to say that in a residential property, a living room would be my favourite due to the large variety of fabrics and furnishings to choose from. It is also a room that can be completely tailored to the client’s needs and style of living.

What have you most enjoyed designing?

When studying at Bournemouth University I designed an office space for a marketing company. I loved the design and included a curved bright orange resin wall that tied all the spaces together.

Do you prefer designing things or making them?

I prefer making things as I am a very hands on person and spend most of my spare time sewing. My favourite things to make are home furnishings, such as pillows and curtains.

Any favourite colour schemes?

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I love the contrast of dark greys and purples with lighter tones, and nudes are always beautiful, but each space has its own

I love the contrast of dark greys and purples with lighter tones, and nudes are always beautiful, but each space has its own identity and that sort of colour scheme would not work well in a bathroom for instance, so each space is individual.

Relax in a tranquil bathroom The bathroom should be a place of relaxation and tranquillity and Marks and Spencer have really captured this with this new bathroom design. The use of purple and creams give the room a warm and cosy feel; exactly what you need while unwinding in the bath. The wood creates a rustic theme and the flowers bring the room to life giving it that extra beautiful touch.

If you need a lot of storage these cabinets are perfect, not taking up much room. They are practical and have enough shelving space for those extra towels and bathroom accessories you may own.

Warm Yourself Up Nothing is better in the cold months than a lovely winter warmer. No not a jumper, we’re talking about a lovely hot bowl of Chilli Con Carne.

Here at Home Sweet Home, we’ve come up with a recipe that is so good it will warm you up instantly. Chilli Con Carne with chorizo and bacon. Have you ever thought of putting bacon and chorizo into your chilli mix before? It works perfectly as the combination of the spicy Spanish sausage and the salty smoked bacon add more rich flavours to the otherwise boring average meal. If you’re looking for something to warm you up on a cold winter’s evening, then this is the meal for you.

Tip:

1 tbsp paprika

The How To

1 tbsp chilli powder

1 beef stock cube

1 chorizo ring

2 mixed chillis

6 rashers of smoked bacon

1 large cooking onion

2 400g tins of chopped tomatoes

2 garlic gloves

150g kidney beans (or baked beans)

500g lean minced beef

350g long grain rice to serve

Prepare onions, chilli’s and garlic cloves. Chop and peel 1 large cooking onion into small squares. (Quick tip, cut the onion in half from root to tip, peel and slice into strips of equal size then cut in half again) Finely chop the peeled garlic cloves and add to the onions. Whilst the bacon in cooking, slice the chorizo in to medium size slices and add into the pan once the bacon is sizzling in the pan. Do not over cook the bacon and chorizo. The chorizo should be soft and the bacon should be crisp once cooked.

Turn your hob onto a medium heat, put the pan on and add the oil and leave for 1-2 minutes to heat. Place the lean mince beef into the pan, breaking it up as you place it in. Brown the mince off for 5-10 minutes. When the meat has browned off add the onions and garlic and keep stirring them for roughly around 5 minutes or until soft. Mix in the chilli powder, paprika and beef stock cube to the beef and vegetables.

Once the bacon and chorizo has cooked add to the beef and vegetable mix. Stir altogether. Add the chopped tomatoes and kidney beans to the pan. Turn the hob back up to a medium heat and then add the teaspoon of sugar, keep stirring for 10 minutes on the medium heat. Once all the ingredients have been stirred together, leave on a low heat for the Chilli Con Carne to simmer for 1 hour.
