The Identity of Total Identity A story on Wim Crouwel Wim Crouwel, born in Groningen in 1928 is a remarkable and inspiring figure with an inventive spirit and vision, vigorous and always distinguished. He designed his first poster in 1952. After leaving artschool he became a painter leaning towards Expressionism, but as he designed this first poster he discovered the pleasure of organising visual information in an aesthetical context. The contrast between Crouwel
as a lyrical expressionist painter and objectivating functionalist designer couldn’t be more extreme. As a designer he felt related to the Bauhaus ideas, the swiss inspired international style. He was fascinated by the rational aspect in Bauhaus typography, which he discovered through Karl Gerstner’s and Gerard Ifert’s work.
http://www.iconofgraphics.com/wim-crouwel/
Although his ideas were bauhaus-related, unlike many Crouwel was not a dogmatist. He was fascinated by the ideas about serial and mass production, as he stated “we need the machine since we have no time”. But he also believed “the machine cannot replace the precision of the human eye and human feeling”. Crouwel’s work has always consisted of these two essential elements: the emotional aspect and the rational one.
A logo made by Wim, using geometric shapes
Crouwel’s famous Atelier 12 poster, imlementing simple and plain graphic design with a large sans seriff style.
Crouwel plays with his letters in the form of a grid, like you can see above. The letters each are designed as spaced according to the grid, which makes for very appealing typographic design.
Dutch Design
Wims story
All histories start at the beginning and so I shall start at the beginning. Willem (or Wim) Hendrik Crouwel was born in 1928 in Groningen, The Netherlands. He originally studied painting at the Groningen Academy of Art and had focused on expressionist works, but after creating his first exhibition poster in 1952, became more and more influenced by the Swiss International Style, which emphasized cleanliness, readability and objectivity. However, throughout his career, he chose the aesthetics of a design over the functionality, and often felt the conflict between the rational and the emotional aspects of design.
Crouwel defines a designer as one who solves problems or reaches towards a goal in an objective manner, using research and analysis to approach a problem. In this process, the designer has to determine how to simplify both the message and the way it’s presented to the audience or client. He feels that in our world today, we are constantly bombarded by communication and media, so that it’s extra important for a designer’s message to be clear and simple. As we have discussed the differences between artists and designers, it’s interesting to note that Crouwel does not consider himself an artist. He says “My work has always been for paying clients and it was really only ever about designing solutions.” With a career that spans over 60 years, Crouwel is celebrated as one of the leading designers of the 20th century. He is most well known for his work at the design studio he co-founded, Total Design (now Total Identity), his posters for the Stedelijk Museum in Amterdam, and for designing grid-centric typefaces New Alphabet, Gridnik and Fodor.
Wim
Crouwel is a graphic design legend, and you can tell how many of the retro-inspired graphic designs that you see today might be sourced from Crouwel’s work. A Crouwel design is very unique and almost trademarked; bold geometry, complementary or somewhat subtle colors, and a great deal of thought put into the symmetry and space. ypography is also one of Crouwel’s very strong points, as seen in many of his works, or in his discussion on typography in the documentary Helvetica. For more on this, watch the interview below. Crouwel’s lines and geometric shapes are very enjoyable to the eyes. Wim Crouwel is also famous for his logo designs, in which his natural eye for geometric shapes lends well.
“Neutrality has its own aesthetics.”

Last summer, there was only one show that was really being discussed around the water cooler. Netflix’s Stranger Things has lured viewers in with its thrilling sci-fi plot, obsessive Eighties pop culture references and charming portrayal of middle-American life. Online, essays mediating on childhood friendship, the show's treatment of women and the power of nostalgia abound. Stranger Things has made stars out of the preteen actors who give the show its heart, and their self-referential Instagram posts show that they know, too. For Winona Ryder, herself a trope of Eighties screen history, it has proved the comeback nobody saw coming.
credit sequence endlessly. For Benguiat, however, that’s ok – he hadn’t heard of Stranger Things, either. The first he knew of it, and the fact his typeface had such importance in it, was when I emailed him to see if he wanted to speak to me about it. The 88-year-old typographer (“But I tell everybody I’m 90”) replied instantly to my email in Helvetica, the font he uses “for mostly everything”, centered, in a range of sizes to make the first letters of our names tower over the others.
Benguiat gave me an instant review of Stranger Things’s titles during our phone conversation a few days later. “It merges, it moves in and out, But Stranger Things has, well, a stranger thing it’s very good. It’s rather pleasing and comfortthat its followers have become fascinated by: able too. And yet exciting at the same time. It’s its opening titles, and the font that is used rather appropriate, if I might say. It lends itself within them. to the feeling of the titles, it has a look. It’s like food – it’s hard to describe what something Stranger Things’s opening credits are an ode tastes like, or identify a good smell.” to typography. The drama’s title emerges only after the credits have woven their way through For the man who made the font, ITC Benguiat them, the lines that make up the letters glowing and Stranger Things is the design equivalent like the red neon bars of a Motel sign. Viewers of catching a whiff of an apple pie in the oven. have found themselves in typography forums, For the thousands of design nerds in love with asking to identify the font used. Buzzfeed has Stranger Things, the combination has been dedicated an entire post to writing popular food described as “pure, unadulterated typographtypes (“Macaroni & Cheese”, “Cookie Cake”) in ic porn”. When I told Benguiat this, he simply the same style as the titles. The show’s creators, laughed and said: “Well, have fun! Maybe my The Duffer Brothers, are questioned about their royalties will go up!”
Heros America’s most prolific typographer and lettering artist. Benguiat has crafted over 600 typeface designs, here are a few of his gems...
EDS FONTS THAT I DIDNT PAY FOR
Benguiat didn’t stop at fonts and typefaces. He made whole new fonts for films such as The Planet of the Apes and Super Fly and David Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks. He was nearly involved in the film adaptation of one of Stephen King’s novels, but production companies and the road accident which nearly left the author an amputee got in the way.
typeface design, but, as someone who innovated the industry himself, doesn’t appear fearful. “There’s a lot of good stuff out there. Plenty of good stuff,” he says. “The designers Matthew Carter, myself and many others, are kind of keeping an eye on things. We go to lectures, we go to talks. We educate people, and, as long as that’s around, it’s getting better and better.”
But, much as it was a logo that got him into the industry, it is logos which remain Benguiat’s most-prized work. “I’ve done the logo for The New York Times, I’ve done the logo for New York Magazine. For Sports Illustrated. The logo for Ford Cars.
One of his greatest collaborators was Herb Lubalin, the ITC co-founder who designed the typeface Avant Garde, while Benguiat drew it. It was originally created for the late-Sixties magazine of the same name to which Benguiat the drawing. “Herb was, in my opinion, one of the finest typographic designers in the industry,” he says of his former colleague, who died in 1981.
“They’re my keepsakes in my mind so when I walk down the street I can say, ‘Hey, I did that.’ You know. I’m very proud of it. When I see the New York Times on a building on a wall, I can look up and say, ‘That’s my logo.’ So that’s my contribution to society.”
Avant Garde is the font used in the Stranger Things for the credits, the names which dive in and out of the glowing red letters in ITC Benguiat. But the Duffer Brothers weren’t aware of this – it’s another happy Benguiat continues to work, designing accident. These masters of design have the odd logo, “sketching and drawing and been brought together again, in the right doodling. But I don’t look forward to it place, at the right time. because it’s a lot of work.” He prefers to keep up a weekly lunch date with the rest of graphic design’s old guard. Some new designs with an old twist UNICASE FONT A unicase font is one that has no case, the glyps from upper and lower case are combined to form one alphabet. It is believed that all alphabets were once unicase. Bradbury Thompson’s plan for simplifying and improving our alphabet was, “Alphabet 26”, his project to combine upper and lowercase letters into one consistent set of letters, eradicated most of the lowercases, except for a, e, m and n.
MONOSPACED FONT A monospaced font, also called a fixed-pitch width or non-proportional font, is a font whose letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal space. This contrasts to variable-width fonts, where the letters differ in size to one another. The frst monospaced typefaces were designed for typewriters, which could only move the same distance forward with each letter typed.
