THEORIES OF THIS PROJECT
INVISIBLE CITIE & cOLLAGE CITY
BRIEF This unit is reflect on the impact of introducing of a large new public transport infrastucture in a dense, complex and consolidated built environment. Melbourne is about to initiate the construction of the new underground line that will connect some of the inner suburbs and the CBD. This project in itself is fairly controversial. However, the purpose of the unit is not to discuss the appropriateness of this initiative, but to reflect on the impact of its implementation in the urban fabric. Thus, it will be focusing on the two central stations of the proposed underground line, North and South CBD, and work on the potential effects and possibilities that this new scenario might have for the city.

COLLAGE
Reference: Invisible City: City & Eyes
The idea of this collage is from BERNARD TSCHUMI's desogm theory, some of the iamge from Tschumi's early drawing " Manhattan hand drawing". Background is black&white streetscapes of little lonsdale st, which is my strip No.58. The big Cone and people jump out from bridge are suppose to have an abstract metaphor of "invisible cities" that I read before. Columns present as sky city legs, it may move on the ground somehow.

INITIAL DESIGN WHAT? WHY? HOW?
Strip 58
What is the existing problem? The existing site which is state library plaza, have countless people stay or pass by, through the junction of Swanston St and Little Lonsdale St. Expecially during the peak time of day. People stay and spend time at plaza. it makes people feel the junction of twon street very crowd. but on the other hand, the Russel St and Elizabeth St side were not so busy compare to Swanstion St Junction. So the problem will be how to solve this cirulation problem. in this very iconic, significant and busy CBD area.
Why is this problem? In case of this cirulation problem, why this peoblem happen in this particular area? I think it has itself contingency, because of the increase of population in Melbourne CBD, there is not enough public space above ground, so it increase the density of poeple on ground. another aspect will be the State library has it own irreplaceability which is this plaza is only large urban plaza in Melbourne CBD, many RMIT University students, as well as working people will spend time around plaza, also it is a main tram station on Swanston St and it will be the new metro transformation station that already proposed.
How we going to solve the problem? Movement(Direction) -People Interaction -People and urban space Reverse -Ground plaza and underground plaza Correspondeent -Above and below The concept will try to solve a problem between space and cirulation, urban living issue for homeless people. Attempt to exchange space from above to below, as same time, make sure the public space won't lose its continuity and its inherent characteristic, above and below should have some kind of similarity, in case of architectural language, as well as extract architectural elements from existing context to archive that.

This drawing shows the density points on existing site ground level and how to transfer the density below, to underground. by indentify this informatin, I was able to understand the site better and design correspondent to it.
This drawing was draw by Kevin Hui on week 5, on our make up lecture in RMIT Design Hub. This is the underground urban plaza rudiment.
6
Week 5 1:200 long sction Drawing. This week base on the existing site condition 1:500 section drawing, I was able to do a basic from of the underground plaza and station, figured out the relationship above and underground, also solved some structural issues underground. At this stage, the drawing still very basic, but I already know where I should go and what I should do, the "What" is clear at this stage.

WHAT Extending Linking Reflecting continuing
WHY Extending -Extending the existing urban library plaza to underground, redirecting the crowd and busy cirulation. Linking
-The central arch public space present as the transition space to link Mel central and Russell St
Reflection -The architectural language of central arch space is reflecting the state libraty of victoria and other historic buildings around site Continuity -The residential living units are designed for homeless people at city, the architectural form followd the existing historical buildings, but interpret it to a comtemporary architectural language

Week 6, 1:200 long sction Drawing. From this week the underground ground plaza design is more clear, but cutting part of the existing library plaza and extending the plaza downwards, to create a new urban public plaza, transfered the crowd and busy cirulation to underground, attempt to solve the problem.
Week 7, 1:200 long sction Drawing. From this week, Arches are added into the underground plaza design, extract the significant architectural elements from site context. The arches follow a certain sequence to keep the continuity but also have a transformation on sizes, it gives a diversity into a logical sequence.

WHAT Extending

Continuity
Entity
WHy The state library of vitoria plaza os already a very significant and successful urban plaza at CBD area. Because of that, the first aspect of this intervention design is extending the existing urban plaza, dowanwards into ground. able to create a new underground plaza, as long as desiging this public space, it reference the existing site context, extract the significant architectural elements from surrounding historical architecture. at the same time, the first level of plaza has another duty which it is an intersection and linkage, connect Melbourne Central and east side of State library of Russel St, underground. To reflect the existing context, the second aspect of intervention design is to create a spacious space, to repect, reflect the context, reinterpret into a same architectural language but different materiality, logicality and formality. Which the 'Arches' play a key role in this intervention. Its arrangement followed a logical sequence which reflect the state library, the historical architectural period of time, but the composition and the variety of sizes also gives a diversity of it. The Continuity and Diversity will bringing a unique expression to people when they experience the space. The intervention of residential units are designed for homeless people, these units are above a series herintage buildings next to the CultureChristian Church. The design technique is extending the whole units above the original buildings, keep the overall architectural langeages on the form, adjust and add contemporary deformation on form and structure while maintain the architectural entity, at the same time, bring some new architectural language into it.

Isometric & Summary drawing

YACHI HOU ALEX 215009283
The isometric give a 3D sense of the arches space, help me understand the space even better, and from the 3D sense of feel of the arches space, it will allow me to do some adjustment for the next masterplan design stage.
The summary drawing I created is a one point perspective of my arches space looking from west to east end. Two person's scale have a great contrast to emphasize the gaint space of the arches. A single bird is chase after a man means the public space which in Melbourne, every single public plaza will have birds around, no excepting for an underground plaza.

Collective Model Kevin's Group
When project proceed to this collective masterplan stage, there will be some changes on each of our six strips from 58 - 64. For my individual design, our group decision was keep my underground 'Arches Plaza', extending the plaza horizontally, all the way above the new metro line. This design will extend the entire existing state library plaza east west, into ground, embrace the urban fabric and celebrate the urban environment underground.

For another important masterplan design, the reversed cone, which correspondent to the existing Melbourne Central cone, will be a art gallary, sit underground, a little shifting of position from existing cone. People will walk through a ramp enjoy the sight of art works all the way down to the bottom, before they reach the underground arches plaza. The residential units have been intergrated with other peer's living units design. Each of our design will be sit on top of Melbourne Central buidling. Entrance will be on each side of Swanston St, also one from existing plaza, another one from underground plaza inside, connect to Melbourne Central reversed cone

epilogue From these three months study, I really learned a lot about design, or I would say a different approach to design a new project. From Collage, most importantly, design a project purely from section, without touch plan at all. I was really straggle at the first five weeks of this trimester. than my tutor, Kevin Hui came and helped me with very stern crit on my existing site drawing and told me to go back to site, observe and draw the site again. From week 5 I spent 3 days seat in the corner of State Library Plaza, watch, observe and draw the site, think about the design issue and criticize myself again and again. after that tough period of time and straggled on design, everything went back on track, after week and week sharp crit in our group, with our peers, not only mine design, but also other peer's design got better and better. The famous WHAT, WHY and HOW did it work very efficiently. The group work stage was most tough time in this unit, we cut the boards day and night all week. but at the time we all knew, the best will come sooner or later to us. Now reach the this final reflective folio, I really want to express my greatest gratitude to our best tutor Kevin Hui and I want to give my greatest appreciation to my peers. Thank you.
