The project is located between the church and the castle of the village, on a very long, thin plot. The idea is to bring clarity to the articulation near the castle which seems completely detached from the rest of the village. By building on this area we wish to create a continuity between the two zones. The observation tower allows us to rise up to observe and understand the very complex and hilly landscape of Gesves.

6

To give the best answer to such a specific steep plot, the idea of clearing a large space using a big retaining wall quickly came up. The wall clarifies the plot by redefining its limits and supports the tower. The space protected by the wall is structured by two light volumes. Playing with transparencies, they create different courtyards and patios.

En Golette

The need to conceive a project involving lively public activities in the surroundings of the castle comes from the will to develop the park. The observation tower is entirely public, contrary to the rest of the project which stays private. Welcoming kids and youth groups, the program answers to the activities relocated in the park which has become a space for discovery and gatherings.

ROUSSEAU ISLAND

17

K ay a k ce n t re - S pr ing 2 0 1 6 T i l f f, B e l g i u m S e con d ye a r of b ac h e l o r, U L i è ge

Located on the Rousseau Island of Tilff, this river island is divided into two areas, a raised & opened area and a lower part covered with vegetation. The building is anchored in the upper part and it opens itself, hugging the contour lines and slowly going towards the vegetation. Going towards nature which allows the gradual extension of the rooms.

Kayak centre

18

The project is a succession of rooms with a large ramp at the back which goes alongside the building. It gives access to all the different rooms, following a sequence in order to have an ergonomic kayak center. This form allows to save a large zone for the launch/training area in front of the building answering to the shape of the island.

VIEWS ON THE RAILWAYS

Located in Angleur, the project gathers students, couples & families. The plot is an embankment tucked in between the railway and the street. It faces a small public square which needed to be refurbished to serve the project. The project creates one big space by redefining the plot using an existing retaining wall. The volumes play to circle a private place raised behind the buildings.

24

The three volumes articulate together, and by their form, invite people to come. The building integrates: - Three student unities, each composed of six rooms and collective spaces. - Seven apartments, two duplexes & five simplexes, with two rooms each. - A multi-purpose hall, which can be used by the students or can be rented for private or public events.

Views on the railways

The program imposed a postbeam wooden structure, every apartment/unity follows the structural frame of the building.

CINQUANTENAIRE

The project is focused on the very complex layout, resulting from years of transformations, of the galleries hidden behind the colonnade of the Cinquantenaire. The concept for this transformation is set up in four points : - Defining a circulation pattern - Re-integrating the lost spaces - Revealing the decor aspect of the facades - Re-evaluating the exhibition space

34

The current layout of the museum is lacking a clear circulation path. We aim to create a unified exhibition zone around the Japanese garden for visitors to feel the space revolving around it and its relation with the outside -which is today inexistent. Visitors will enter this zone at the small rotunda between the long galleries, creating a central meeting point before the exploring of this part of the museum. For this new zone, we propose to expose the Non-European collection in the galleries and to transform the lower levels of the colonnades into ateliers and studios.

Cinquantenaire

We aim to re-integrate the many left out spaces created by the layout by opening views and/or access to them. By playing with opening in the back facade of the colonnade, we wish to use those

courtyard as a transition zone between the colonnade and the museum. As a result of the demolition of the original curved gallery, two strong facades were conceived. The East facade was built only for the purpose of keeping the symmetry of the outside plaza. By reaveling the decor aspect of the museum we wish to allow people from the outside of the museum to get a glimpse of what is inside and visa versa. Thanks to new functions such as artists ateliers and workshops classrooms, and by breaking through the back facade of the colonnade and re-using the lost spaces, we wish to properly link the colonnade with the main building. Through this reflection on the transformation of this part of the Cinquantenaire, we tried to elaborate on the heavy history behind this monument built by Leopold II and to present a proposition which tries to deal with its contentious history.

OVERLAPPING

C ol l e ct i ve hou si n g - Fa l l 2 0 1 6 S e r a i n g, B e l giu m Thi rd ye a r of bac h e l o r, U L i è ge

The plot is located in FlĂŠmalle, we worked on an existing master plan created to help revitalize the city. The plot is right in between the old and new parts of the city. Facing two small places on both sides, the building plays with different levels to let the interior of the island communicate with those places.

Overlapping

48

Like overlapped boxes, it creates a visual link between the inside and the outside. The corner is marked to reinforce the crossroad while the height gets lower towards the dwellings. Big terraces are laid out on the different rooftops. The building is composed of ten different apartments, as both simplexes and duplexes.

A SPACE FOR ART

What is a space for art? What space could highlight the paintings of Joseph Mallord William Turner? One of the most poetic painters from the XVIII century currently exposed in the gallery designed by Stirling in the eighties in London. This time the project involves no program, no specific place, no budget, but just the universe created by Turner to create a space.

54

A long walk on the cliff of South West England seems to the most ideal place. A landscape full of poesy that inspired painters, poets, writers and many more people. Inviting the visitor to dive in the land, walking through long dark halls putting Turner’s work into light.

A space for art

The light, very characteristic of Truner’s work, guides the visitor through the path. At certain points, we’re invited to look at the landscape framed for us. We can never really look outside from the inside, the openings are placed to lead us to go in one direction. A long walk with the painter.
