JAZZ Festival February 27-28, 2015 Washington Hall follow us @ subnd

Welcome Dear CJF Fans, It is with great pride that we welcome you to the University of Notre Dame’s 57th annual Collegiate Jazz Festival, the oldest collegiate jazz festival in the nation. The University of Notre Dame has always been an institution rich in tradition, with the Collegiate Jazz Festival being no different in that regard. Year after year, Notre Dame is proud to welcome some of America’s premiere collegiate jazz ensembles to perform within historic Washington Hall. The festival’s unique emphasis on both performance and education has allowed us to attract, year after year, a selection of judges who are not only world-class musicians, but also, innovative and passionate jazz educators. Look down the list of the festival’s past adjudicators and you’ll see a group of musicians who essentially comprise a “Who’s Who” of jazz in the 20th and 21st century. This year, we are proud to welcome Terell Stafford, Bruce Barth, Tim Warfield Jr., Billy Williams, and Peter Washington as judges for this year’s Collegiate Jazz Festival. True to the mission of the festival, our judges promise to not only thrill with their musical virtuosity but also to offer their years of experience as a means of education to the festival participants.

With the assembly of performers and judges, we are sure that this year’s festival will be one of the best in a long tradition. We would like to sincerely thank the University of Notre Dame, the Student Union Board, and gracious volunteers whose hard work has made this festival a reality. It has truly been a pleasure to work with such a creative and supportive team and it is with their efforts that we present this festival to you. Finally, we would like to thank you, the supportive audience of this year’s festival. By attending this festival and becoming a patron of jazz music, you are not only partaking in a great Notre Dame tradition, but more importantly, a great American tradition. What has made the Collegiate Jazz Festival so great is that it is such a rewarding experience for audience, musician, and staff alike, and we thank you for your support. Sincerely, Holly Backstrom and Amelia McReynolds Collegiate Jazz Festival Coordinators Student Union Board

Biographies

Tim Warfield, Jr. Tenor saxophonist Tim Warfield, Jr. began to make his mark in the ‘90s. His first recording, A Cool Blue, was selected as one of the top ten recordings of the year in a 1995 New York Times critic’s poll, as was his 1998 recording Gentle Warrior proclaiming him ‘possibly the most powerful tenor saxophonist of his generation’. In 2010, his CD “A Sentimental Journey” on the “Criss Cross Jazz’’ label, was selected as a “Critic’s Choice” in the New York Times, by Ben Ratliff. In December of 2012, Warfield released “Tim Warfield’s Jazzy Christmas, on his label “Undaunted Music.” The CD advanced to slot #25, as the Highest Debut, Most Added, and Biggest Gainer, on the Jazzweek charts, in only its second week of release Tim is currently serving as a board member for the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz as well as an artistin-residence at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa.

2015 CJF Judges Billy Williams Drummer Billy Williams is the leader of his own ensemble that has appeared in concert at the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educator’s Series, Bohemian Caverns (Washington D.C.), The Virginia Museum of Fine Art and the Chrysler Museum of Art’s “The Fine Art of Jazz” series. Biographies Peter Washington Perhaps the most recorded bassist of his generation, Peter Washington has also played an integral part in two of the most important and highly praised jazz trios of the last 20 years, in addition to a “who’s who” roster of jazz artists. In the early 1990’s Washington joined the Tommy Flanagan Trio , called by many “the greatest trio in jazz”, and remained until Flanagan’s death, in 2002. For the past ten years he has been a member of the very highly acclaimed Bill Charlap Trio. In addition to these long- term commitments Washington has worked and recorded with an extremely large number of top- tier artists, of all generations. In the scope and breadth of his career thus far, his adaptability, and in his emphasis on creative, supportive, swiging time- playing as well as inventive and intelligent soloing, Washington has been compared to the likes of George Duvivier, Milt Hinton, and Ron Carter.

Jazz Band 1 is Notre Dame’s top performing jazz ensemble, consisting primarily of nonmusic majors from every field of study at the University. Selected by audition at the beginning of the school year, the members rehearse 90 minutes a week. The group has three primary goals: (1) to play a variety of musical styles within the jazz idiom, (2) to perform original arrangements from major jazz orchestras such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Thad JonesMel Lewis, Clayton-Hamilton, etc., and (3) to encourage students in the group to develop and display their skills at improvisation. The University of Notre Dame Jazz Band annually plays at four campus concerts and does a concert tour to Chicago. At Notre Dame’s CJF, director Larry Dwyer was named Best Trombonist in 1965 and 1966, was the student leader of ND’s jazz band and combo at the 1966 CJF, and served as a CJF judge in 1987. He is now in his fourteenth year as director of jazz studies at Notre Dame. Director Matt Merten founded Notre Dame’s New Orleans Brass Brand, and is in his tenth year as a band director at the University of Notre Dame.

The University of Notre Dame New Orleans Brass Band plays traditional and contemporary New Orleans music, and features songs in the style of groups such as the Rebirth Brass Band, the Youngblood Brass Band, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Traditional brass bands in New Orleans combined European march music with the African rhythms and improvisation used in jazz music. In recent decades the New Orleans brass band tradition has incorporated elements of funk and hip hop music. Notre Dame’s Brass Band performs at numerous events each year, including concerts at the DeBartlo Performing Arts Center, informal performances at Legends and Reckers on campus, and at offcampus venues. The group also tours to Chicago annually with Notre Dame’s Jazz Band 1.
