PROJECT: Hostel LOCATION: Over the Rhine, Cincinnati, OH D ATE: Fall 2018
PAR TI D IAGR AM
The site is located in Over the Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio at the corner of Walnut and E 12th Street. The area surrounding our site consists of new and trendy restaurants, boutiques, and bars. Over the Rhine has recently undergone a transformation from an impoverished neighborhood to an up-and-coming hot spot. Over the Rhine is a divided community because many of the poor individuals living there originally were displaced when the city began to create housing for wealthier individuals. My concept is “Bridge the Gap” both literally and figuratively. I hope to bring together the divided sides of the community with a hostel that all individuals can feel connected to. Humans have an innate connection with nature. Incorporating nature into my design will hopefully help all occupants to feel welcome and included. There is a large open atrium in the center of the floor plan for visitors to gather. The gap is “bridged” by a central walkway and two grand, curving staircases.

My design studio stems from the four elements that make up our planet: fire, water, earth, and air, hence the name Elementour Design. It was important to me to go back to nature when creating this design, but still incorporate a the modernity of today’s style. The exterior is made up of four main components, just like our earth is made up of the four elements. Plants and greenery inspired my color scheme, while fire inspired my lighting Water influenced the flow and circulation of my floor plan, as it is extremely open and accessible; one can easily move from room to room. I incorporated large windows and high ceilings because I wanted air flow to always be circulating in and out of the building; the studio should never feel stagnant so the designers are inspired to continue moving along with their work. The shape of the floor plan resembles an “E in order to incorporate my brand into the design.

Clifton Library aims to provide visitors with a cinematic experience as they move throughout the space. The interior space focuses on the circulation and transitions of the space. The main concept behind the design stems from the idea of shifting from paper to digital work. The exterior facade represents a pixelization, relating to the new technological age into which we have moved. PA RTI D IAGR AM
