WELCOME From Our Board Chair 19 years and another new beginning… So many positive and exciting things are happening to both our community and our Festival. And still, we know, the best is yet to come. So, it is with great excitement that we announce the new name that will take us into our future, the OUTSHINE Film Festival. This exciting and compelling new renaming/rebranding, gives us a better more memorable image, showcases the amazing place that we live and speaks volumes about us as a community. Our plan is to work tirelessly to OUTSHINE as a Festival and brighten up our incredible South Florida Community. 19 years ago, we needed to say The Miami (and Fort Lauderdale) “Gay and Lesbian” Film Festival. Two years ago, we wanted to bring our two South Florida film festivals together to form one big community organization that puts on two Festivals. Miami would be in the SPRING and Fort Lauderdale in the FALL, shattering the Dade – Broward line in the sand. We combined the names Miami and Fort Lauderdale and called it the The MiFo LGBT Film Festival. The renaming worked wonders, bringing our two communities together with full member benefits to each of our two festivals and both communities supporting each other. While the name accomplished bringing our festivals and communities together, it lacked the luster to help us forge ahead. Our mission has always been to OUTSHINE in so many ways; our new name will empower us do exactly that and carry us even more brightly into our future…To be OUT and SHINE; this will always be our goal. We produce this Festival for you; we do this so we have a place to come together to experience the joy of watching our stories together ON SCREEN. We do this fabulous Cultural Event so we have an upscale Social way of being together over many days and twice a year, for terrific films in a wonderful setting. We enjoy watching and discussing our films, seeing old friends and making new ones. That, at our core, is what we are about and that will always be our mission. Please continue to support us. Bring, tell your friends, consider volunteering, spread the word, and help us sustain and grow our Festival by joining us. We forge forward together, when we OUTSHINE together.

WELCOME Dear Film Family,

Welcome to the 19th Annual Miami Edition of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival. Why do we go to movies? Which is not the same as why we watch movies. We go to movies because of PEOPLE. Even someone going to the movies by themselves is going there to watch it with people: to laugh with them, cry with them, jump in their seats with them, take in the whole spectacle of the film with them. When you go with others, you inevitably talk about it. Sometimes you may have groups of friends you watch certain types of movies with, and members of that group bring others and you meet new people. In the end, you GO to the movies to be with PEOPLE. Over the ten days of the Festival enjoy our outrageous comedies, our outspoken documentaries, and our outstanding dramas all with the PEOPLE you have gotten to know through the years and new friends you meet this year. Our mission is to inspire, entertain and educate. We hope by the end of the Festival you have been touched by a story you have seen and moved to act, you have laughed or cried, you have learned something new. We hope the Festival has impacted your life in a meaningful way. I wish to thank my staff, Board of Directors, our Producers Circle Members, Sponsors, Patrons, Members, and Volunteers for the continued success of the Festival, and who have allowed us to OUTSHINE through the years. See you at the movies,

Aram, an Iranian-Armenian trans man living in the U.S. since childhood, returns to Armenia to meet his girlfriend’s conservative family. Over the course of the day-long journey, Aram’s brother helps him prepare for the meeting, while also coming to terms with his transition. Aram sees many cultural, religious, and national differences on the one-day trip, but harder obstacles are ahead. Apricot Groves is a quiet and introspective film which beautifully illustrates the bittersweet notion of reconnecting with a culture that may not be accepting of who you’ve become.

Frustrated with the cards life has dealt him, Hank (Jim Belushi) is a man whose circumstances have driven him to fear diversity, yet his Central Florida town is adhering less and less to the white, straight profile with which he’s comfortable. After suffering a heart attack, Hank’s life is saved by a transplant—but will Hank’s body accept a donation from a Puerto Rican drag queen?

The Sociologist and the Pooh (La sociologue et l’ourson)

With the United States gripped in the panic of the Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower deems homosexuals to be “security risks” and orders the immediate firing of any government employee discovered to be gay or lesbian. It triggers a vicious witch hunt that ruins tens of thousands of lives and thrusts an unlikely hero into the forefront of what would become the modern LGBT rights movement. The Lavender Scare shines a light on a chapter of American history that has never received the attention it deserves.

17-year-old Cat is a shy and troubled photography student. In a remote fishing village in Iceland, teenage boys Thor and Christian experience dramatic changes in themselves and each other as one tries to win the heart of a girl, while the other discovers new feelings towards his best friend. REGAL 18 From September 2012 to May 2013, the entire country of France gets passionate about proposed legislation that will permit marriage for all. Over a period of nine months, Sociologist Irène Théry recounts to her son her views on this raucous debate. From these recordings, the directors created “teddy bear cinema” constructed of children’s toys and pieces of cardboard. An intimate, often amusing and completely unique portrait of a now international saga, The Sociologist and the Pooh helps us rediscover what we all thought we knew perfectly well: The Family.

Charlie is a college student who loves love. He loves the way James Dean and Natalie Wood passionately kiss with the sublime punctuation of a swelling orchestra and Laurence Olivier vows to take Joan Fontaine behind a tree and make “violent love” to her. But when Charlie finds his romantic pursuits leading to icky online encounters, seedy back rooms in leather bars, and the unexpected tears of cute freshmen who aren’t “really out,” Charlie starts to worry that his homosexuality is an incompatible factor with the classic, Hollywood romance he’s always aspired towards.

REGAL 17 Exploring universal themes of identity, dreams, family and love, Rebels on Pointe is a film celebrating the famous Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. The all-male, comic ballet company was founded in the 70s on the heels of New York’s Stonewall riots and has a huge worldwide cult following. The film juxtaposes behind-the-scenes access, rich archives and history, intimate character-driven stories, and amazing dance performances. It’s a story which ultimately proves that a ballerina is not only a woman dancing but an act of revolution in a tutu. As a young man waits to be executed for a hate crime, two sets of parents struggle to deal with the consequences. As the clock ticks toward midnight and the execution, these two families are on a collision course to confront how this happened and who is to blame. Stark and foreboding, this story unfolds between the lines. It tells you nothing, but leads you to understand everything. It compels you to dig deep into the lives of these characters and challenges you not to care. It is an emotional journey, with unforgettable performances, unveiled through jarring revelations.

‘Mad’ Mary McArdle returns home after a short spell in prison to find everything and everyone has changed. Her best friend, Charlene, is getting married and Mary is maid of honor. When Carlene refuses Mary a “plus one” because she thinks Mary couldn’t find a date... Mary becomes determined to prove her wrong. But her attempts at dating are a disaster and she feels more alone… until she meets Jess and everything changes. A Date For Mad Mary is a nuanced drama with moments of wry laugh-out-loud comedy and endearing characters.

REGAL 17 Carlos Jauregui was many things: gay rights activist, friend, lover, fighter, icon, and an inspiration to the masses. He fought for the visibility of gays, lesbians and transgender, and his conviction and courage transformed the lives of the Argentine LGBT community and the laws within the country. He led the first Pride March in Argentina, unifying the LGBT movement. He laid the foundations of dialogue leading the way to anti-discrimination laws. Not only did he fight for LGBT rights, he also fought his own internal battle with AIDS.

REGAL 18 Every day, our changing climate pushes us closer to an environmental catastrophe, but for most the problem is easy to ignore. David Hallquist, a Vermont utility executive, has made it his mission to take on one of the largest contributors of this global crisis -- our electric grid. But, when his son Derek tries to tell his father’s story, the film is soon derailed by a staggering family secret, one that forces Derek and David to turn their attention toward a much more personal struggle, one that can no longer be ignored.

REGAL 18

An emotional journey of lost human beings trying to find themselves takes place in what could be considered a fairly strange place: an orgy in a Spanish mansion. A message circulates from mobile phone to mobile phone and it is started! All at once, a diverse range of strangers get together, searching for sex, and in doing so they expose their funny, sexy and profound sides. Like Foam shows that things are not always what they seem and never has an orgy been so funny and full of love.

Ned is a tattoo artist whose days are filled with either playing basketball, tattooing clients or visiting Max, her much older, bedridden lesbian friend. She has everything in control until her world starts to crumble: she’s dumped by her long-time girlfriend and Max suddenly dies. Not wanting to grow old alone like her friends, Ned finally pursues her dream to have a baby -- in any way possible. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be easy. What follows is a series of comic and desperate attempts to find and achieve her purpose.
