lonely and cold — but for an artist

Where to go when you need space and calm to find inspiration? This solitary writer asked for a view on the choir of the abbey of Villers-La-Ville, Belgium. Stuck between four parallel walls, there is nothing left to see but behind oneself. A temporary shelter to find peace through isolation and thinking.

02 would you live on an island?

Surrounded by water, everywhere. A little island, Lazaretto Vecchio, near “the golden island of Venice”, the Lido. Ten students and two teachers are invited to spend six months alone as part of their training course in woodcraft.

03 room for an artwork only

“Girl escaping”, a sculpture by Joan Mirò, needed a space to be exhibited. A room that had to keep the girl dreaming of fleeing, through light, materials, details. But watch out! Between traps and illusions, is there a way to escape from behind bars?

04 between four blind walls

Four walls, no window. Nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Five students that chose to live together outside of the fastmoving world they were tired of. A brief moment of calm in a peaceful place to wait. Or is it? There is only one way to know, as there is only one door to the outside world.

not much to see here

A microcosm in the city. A few public activities ; a bar, an outdoor climbing wall, and a little martial arts hall activate the life of this neighborhood from Molenbeek, Brussels (Rue de l’Escaut). A breath in a dense urban context. And there are also some people living up there.

06 if I lived with 40 neighbors

It is a new form of life in an existing neighborhood — in Le Bois Habité, Lille, France. A renovation and an extension of two buildings reunited to shelter new dynamics of co-living. 40 people living together. 40 people in one house. And yet, their mutual effort provides some new services to the whole area.

07 the envelope

The northern district of Brussels suffered way too much from years of destruction and real estate operations. Exhausted by a life of waiting for things to get better without never be, people revolted and declared the independence of the hood. A new life emerges at all levels of society inside the envelope. Rules change like, really change. So they need a new place to discuss, a place that sends a different message.

08 yes mister real estate, but…

Let’s play the game. How can we, as architects, talk the language of real estate development and protecting the city, its inhabitants and its green spaces at the same time? On paper, all boxes are filled in for the Heyselplateau, Brussels. But take a careful look at what happens between the lines : a protected green area, a lot of public spaces, activities for people from all walks of life. A call for a different future, slightly shifting the lines and changing the rules of the game.

Bricks. Ruins. Wear. Last signs of hope in the middle of the dust. Silence and contemplation. Night call, dead trees, cold earth. In the reflection of the calm water, a light shines on. Tomorrow will be another day. Memorial for today.

10 the house between the history and now

The little city of Tongres, Belgium, has a strong historical heritage. Yet, contemporary architecture dialogues with this history, and old and new subtly go together, side by side. That is what this small public library plays with. Or in other words, how symbols of the past may help thinking a contemporary building that still stands out from its surroundings?

11 about belgian bricks

Researches about an actual trend in Belgian contemporary architecture. Materials, construction details, economy of means and ecology participate together in a new architectural language, a recognizable aesthetic. By collecting such projects, a new question is then raised : what if this new language hid other meanings and new contradictions?

Containers and corrugated iron are the new places-to-be for the petty bourgeois and the tourist visiting Antwerp, Belgium. Several meters above the ground level, some blind exhibition room, bar, and reception hall need to be getting through to finally access the restaurant and its views on the canal «Escaut».

13 what it says about us

Assuming that there is currently an aestheticization of the daily life processing, transforming the environment we live in, this new university infrastructure speculates about future forms of institutions. Shared with public equipments, the school pushes the boundary still a bit further to question our habits, our lifestyles, and finally, what the environment we design could say about us.

writings.

l’enveloppe

The book goes with the eponymous project. It puts forward an interpretative analysis of the Northern District of Brussels, and then goes on with a narrative utopian tale : what could be life if society significantly shifted? A speculative story on another perspective for the district.

15 émergence x positions

16 de l’autonomie du lieu présent

Could architecture be critical? Through some debates of the last century, this book hypothesizes that it exists an autonomous moment into the architectural work capable of offering some free spaces. And it would be precisely there that architects may be able to say something about the society they live in.

Exhibited at La Cambre Horta exhibition 2021.

What if ascetic architecture of today hid in fact some new contradictory meanings? That is the idea this novel explores through some ecological, economical and social clues.

ce que ça dit de nous (master thesis)

Belgian contemporary architecture seems to be exemplary in some ways. Through fictional dialogues, photographic tale and a few essays, this thesis defends the hypothesis that such an architectural production is in fact permeated by the aestheticization of daily life, and so inextricably linked to the fashion’s economic system.
