Design Toolbox - The Brief We decided to use the concept of a lunch box to reveal the details of the process of design. We only had an hour to find suitable materials.

Design Toolbox - Research We had to determine how people going to a particular office have travelled there and whether it was a healthy option. We put down paper leading to the entrance to collect their tracks.

Design Toolbox - Idea Generation A story of tracking down stolen id. First three pages are generating ideas for the two characters and products that will be used to find the stolen id.

Finalising the characters, setting the scene and creating the backdrop to the story. Final piece shows the characters coming to life on the storyboard. 3D effect created by making the objects and characters stand up from the surface.

Design Toolbox - Design Development We wanted to design a physically interactive game by having instructions for players to do something or take part in “truth or dare. As a basis we decided to rejuvenate the old Pog game.

Previous and this page show how the game is played. A large counter or marble is dropped on to a pile of Pogs to scatter them. The top one left on the pile is the action that the player has to perform.

Design Toolbox - Design Development - RSA Brief We decided to design a “memorable date diary for patients to keep as a record of their appointments. Sketching mock-up and deciding what information to include.

Name, photo and next appointment date to be on diary cover. Inside a membership card and registration form to include list of interests and favourite drink. Next will be a description of treatment needed and then pages of games, puzzles, etc, based on list of interests to pass time in waiting room where favourite drink will be served.

Final Design Toolbox I identified the stages of the process of design and wanted to design a toolbox for these.

1 Introduce yourself to the client 2 Discuss brief: ‘What is it you want me to do and what is the time-table? 3 Carry out Primary and Secondary research based on client’s requirement
4 Show portfolio if time is appropriate

8 Amend and re-sketch design

9 Review amended design with the client 10 Create final design to include all the specs from the brief and obtain client’s approval

11 Create a prototype of design

5 Ask questions about the project (who, what where and why)

12 Show prototype to the client

6 Further detail on finer points

13 If the client is satisfied with the prototype, MAKE final product

7 Develop sketches of first ideas and show them to the client. Discuss queries and iron out any problems

14 Review the final product and then document the whole process

As part of my research I went back to look at the “Idea Generation project, and decided to link the two concepts together for this project. I wanted to create an interactive toolbox, and investigated using a gumball machine which would dispense gumballs containing messages. This proved too difficult but I liked the concept so thought about other food items that could contain messages. Fortune Cookies! (see below) There are fourteen messages so I would need fourteen fortune cookies.

I had to find a jar with a wide opening so that people could get their hands inside to reach the cookies easily. A pick ‘n mix type of jar was what I needed.

To keep the cookies fresh they needed to be in “sure seal’ bags. These bags are not very interesting so I decided to design labels for them. I used the cookie design as background for the label and added the slogan “what’s my number?” as each message inside the cookie had a number.

I decided to turn my project into a game. By using two jars with two sets of messages in the cookies two teams could race against each other.
