WHERE DOES BROWN SUGAR CAKE COME FROM Brown Sugar Cake is a specialty of and most closely associated with the Penghu Islands (archipelago actually) off the west coast of Taiwan. Though it seems the cake’s ancestry stretches back to Okinawa and the Japanese period, as explained by the Penghu National Scenic Area. I however have never been to Penghu. Luckily I didn’t have to go there to find the cake since the cake is also popular in Taiwan proper.
