Luminosity also known as luminance is the quality or condition of radiating or reflecting light. Light allows the object/subject to be visable to the human eye; another can also be illumination.
LIGHT LIGHT STUDY STUDY || LUMINOSITY LUMINOSITY
“Light closes the gap between architecture and our perception” - Thomas Schielke
B
A
Through the human cycle of life, light cannot be seen, It can only be known. Light is still. The sense of sight cannot respond to stillness. The eyes ‘feel’ and believe that the light is but a wave motion simulating the idea of light. In a world where all things else in this
electric wave universe, the idea of light cannot be produced. When a man sees the light of the sun, his belief is that he is actually seeing light when the nerve of his eyes is but ‘feeling’ the intense, rapid, short-wave vibrations of the kind of wave motion which he
senses the incandescent; thus the sense of the vibrant electric current in our eyes burns. Fast motion, simulating light, can be the cause for light to destroy our eyes.
“Man likewise cannot see darkness. The nerves of his eyes, which sense motion, slow down to a rate of vibration that he can no longer “feel.””
C
Following the path of luminosity, there’s correlation of between light and architecture. Light can be translated and used towards architecture; an example of this Is Zaha Hadid’s projects. Zaha Hadid’s work explores through the abstract of paintings
that have led to several graphical interpretations of light and luminaires. In order to interweave the surrounding of landscape and new structures, Hadid analysed abstracted urban transport patterns and transformed them into luminaire patterns. An example of her work is
Strasbourg’s HoenheimNord Terminus and Car Park (Image C) her fascination of white road markings and converted them into white linear diffuse luminaires and integrated into strips in the concrete roof or tilted poles for the car parking space.
D
Zaha Hadid’s interior of the MAXXI, the museum of XXI of Century Arts is another example of altering of light though it’s design, she developed a characteristic feeling of fluid forms, daylight, and lights at the museum. The project was to ensure a soft light for the structural curves. The black stairways
create a contrast with the white luminous underside and concrete. There’s a flow of light throughout the building that builds a calm counterpoint to the dynamic lines and the use of black and white material as contrast.
“The action of speaking or acting on behalf of someone, or the state of being so represented;”
Zaha Hadid’s projects is identified as a decisive turning point in her design strategy; One of her projects Nordpark railway station, pushed her deconstructivism and fragmentation aside and took a step into a new language of light.

The House Cast in Liquid Stone | SPASM Design Architects
SPASM Architects created a strong piece of design where the building itself shows its powerful texture of solidity. Located in Kholopi, India the house is located in a large and open landscape where during the heaty summer and beautiful surrounding of nature
11
Stone has been used in many forms, based on use, wear, grip, texture. The dark saturated black matt-ness conjures a cool sense of refuge and calm.
SPARTIAL
Images cannot express the sense of weight when one approaches, or the sense of release at the edge of the building.
SEEK LIGHT IS A JOURNEY
The Design shows a great connection between the landscape and building. Similar to Frank Lloyd Wrights Falling water. The building has many exposed areas in its residence. It has open Pools, courtyard, Livign space and more.

LIGHT LIGHT STUDY STUDY || REFLECTION REFLECTION
B
The definition of Reflection is the change of wave at the boundary between two different media and the wave moves back into the medium it came from. Reflection can come from light, sound and water waves. A man reflects philosophy when he can build on previous actions, events or decisions. Man can view reflection on a different way, through the materiality of two different subjects, and shows the same mirror effect as the originator. This can be light in this architectural case study.
A
The Selfridges Birmingham department store (Image B) is a diffuse reflection of the faรงade cladding lead to an abstract transformed, which primarily determined by the brightness and colour of the sky and shows a clear mirror effect of the neighbourhood. This is an example of how the material gives it a mirror/reflection on the site.
19
Though modernism is promoted a transparent glass of architecture, the movement consists of large glass facades. Mies Van Der Rohe uses these elements as a trademark mullions to break up his facades. But overtime, countless uniform structural glazing skyscrapers have risen, and the reinterpretations of facades have gained attention through architecture.
Mies Van Der Rohe had a vision where he discards the rectangular tower in favour of a free-foam glass skin in his proposal. “Because I was using glass, I was anxious to avoid dead surface reflecting too much light, so I broke the facades a little in plan so that light could fall on them at different angles: like crystal, like cut crystal. -Mies Van Der Rohe

Frank Gehry transferred his aesthetic from glass to metal with the titanium cladding of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Image c) in 1997. The whole building appareared to be an urban jewel that changed numerous urban redevelopments with its iconic signature. the monotony of windowless exhibition halls. When it’s orientated towards the sky, the surface gives brightness to the building which sets a contrast to the dark perforations and areas where the band leads to the ground. Many of these buildings are an example of what both the architecture and the term reflection have a correlation between each other. As said, reflection can come from light, sound and water The Messe Basel New Hall by Herzog waves. LIGHT LIGHT STUDY STUDY || OPACITY OPACITY
D
A
B
The definition of opacity is the difficultly to see through. It’s also referred to as transparency or translucency. Opacity is a figure where there’s a connection to transparency. It’s difficult to see through for the human eye but it’s relevant to our design feature.
The concept idea of ‘white diffusion’ is used by whitepainted plaster, whiteenamelled steel and white linoleum was introduced by Alvar Aalto achieved in Nordjylland art museum. The shades of white includes covering the walls, floors and ceilings as daylight shines to the materials. The power
of pure white volumes isn’t the only characteristic of the Nordic built environment. The nature of light and shadow give the materiality a focus it needs.
27
White surfaces have a high reflectance, in order to have bright interior for dark winter periods. But Plummer says that the whiteness is also linked to the ‘beauty of snow-covered landscape’. Examples are shown as churches with white interior and light entering though the interior. Thus allows the strong contrast of light entering
though from glass and gives the white surface a studied the various daylight phenomena in the powerful view. Nordic countries. With the photo examples of light showing different effect – shows the beauty of light entering through the interior of its design. Great buildings around the Scandinavian countries that resonate the use of light in the winter and long summer days. Henry Plummer In the image, Religious buildings have a wide variety of concepts ranging from material textures to a specific glass feature and wide ranges of volumes that change during the time, day, and seasons with the use of light. Churches tend to change characteristic light patterns during the whole morning form, churches change it’s ways when sunlight is entered through the service; An example of this is the Pirkkala Church by Käpy and C
Simo Paavilainen (Image C) where it appears the contrast sunlight projects and the glass acts as a lens and mirror.
“Light is the most important feature of the church. I provided white walls and white ceilings so that daylight, which is limited in Denmark for much of the year, is fully used and produces an intensity of light always greater than that outside.” - Henry Plummer 28

LIGHT LIGHT STUDY STUDY || FILTRATION FILTRATION
The definition of Filtration is the process where solid particles in a liquid of gas are removed by the use of a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through but retains solid particles. The other media such as electricity, light and sound can also be filtered. In research, Filtration will have a correlation of light and architecure. This section will discuss examples of different projects and the way light can A be used and altered though the design. This is a man-made creation of what light does to our materiality.
Le Corbusier created the kinetic architecture through to daylight, with the orientation, openings and textures. An example of this is pilgrimage chapel at Ronchamp, the monastery of Sainte Marie de La Tourette, and the parish church of Saint- Pierre in firminy show different spaces with light.
B
C 31
The use of light choreography in La Tourette’s to a large rectangle and in summer when the church starts with the use of sunlight. Theres sun reaches its maximum capacity. a crack on top of the west wall that allows light to enter through along the side walls as lines. The northern wall connects two golden lines and the sun direction dropping, the line slowly moves upward. With the movement of sunlight, when the golden light hits the slight upward tilted roof plane and grazing over the ceiling of prefabricated slabs; there is a change in the effect when the winter conditions change
E
The Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut at Ronchamp (1950-55) (Image D) comes to Henry Plummer – the continuous circle of solar events. Th sun illuminates the alcove at the chapels side and turns the red paint even brighter. Thus show that the light is a strong and floods the tall slots between east and south walls, like rays of light through deep cavities of the southern wall. D
Le courbusier work proves that he has a clear understanding of the way light is functioned through the projects interior. Most being churches show an enrich colours and function when the sun enters through windows that project a strong contrast.
