Dual Penthouse

This Miami residence is actually two apartments that were purchased together and combined to create a stunning two storey, 11,000 sqft penthouse apartment. The penthouse includes a generous open plan communal space, a completely redesigned kitchen, a pool with a window into the deep end from the first floor, a secret room, multiple spa areas including a steam room constructed entirely out of slab carrera marble, a large indoor pool room with a wet bar, and a finished roof terrace. No expense was spared in the materials or the detailing of the residence creating many specific luxury experiences.

Brooklyn Heights Renovation

This project is the renovation of a pre-war building for a young couple with two children. The renovation includes the demolishing of extraneous dividing walls to open up the public area, completely redesigning the kitchen and connecting it to the public area, upgrading the existing two bathrooms along with introducing a completely new third one. We used a design language that timelessly blends traditional styling and contemporary detailing and materials.

Professional / Space Exploration / Under Construction

Williamsburg Loft Renovation

This loft for a young family was formerly two classrooms in a school building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Space Exploration employed a language of light and simplicity to make the most of the apartment’s dramatic twenty foot while updating it to accommodate their growing family. Originally the couple slept in the mezzanine and the daughter used a secondary staircase that was sealed off at the top and bottom as her bedroom. We introduced new partitions at the east end of the apartment that would serve as the two bedrooms, rearranged the existing stair to accommodate the new bedrooms, and redressed the existing mezzanine using a language of light and simplicity to make the most of the apartment’s dramatic 20-foot ceiling height and existing period detailing.





Light and Air

The new east elevation created by the new bedrooms was looked at as a design opportunity. We employed a clerestory along this new east elevation of wood and glass to allow as much light to pass through all spaces of the apartment and subtly connect the public and private spaces. The new staircase proved too narrow for a traditional railing so we decided to scribe the railing into the wall. Inside the cavity, a walnut railing rests on top of a dimensional blackened steel channel. This assembly is illuminated by a hidden LED which illuminated the railing along with the staircase.

Jersey City Restaurant

A repeat client with a string of restaurants jumped on a new space in Jersey City. Taking cues from Charleston and the south, we laid out a new 100 seat design featuring a new operable storefront, new stone bar and backbar, a central seating element, booths, a wood banquet along the front windows, and coffee service out the door adjacent to the bar. Lots of emphasis was placed on the details with custom millwork on the bar, central seating element, shelving, and wall treatments along with custom designed lights.

Dumbo has evolved into New York City’s premier tech hub and one of Brooklyn’s most desirable neighborhoods. This project aims to capitalize on the opportunities of the highly visible and highly connected site. By recognizing the importance of developing a conceptual vision that will be inviting to the creative workforce and appealing to the established marketplace of the neighborhood the project aims to usher in the next stage in Dumbo’s development as a vibrant 24-hour community by incorporating innovative housing typologies, commercial spaces mixed with amenities, and art / cultural programming into the current watchtower towers and surrounding streetscapes.

Connected Programs

The library and museum will both function as an extension of gateway park. The landscape will spiral and wrap around both buildings so that users will enjoy vast amounts of public space all along the exterior. Inviting spaces will be created for activities such as running, cycling, barbecuing and reading will be available to all users of the park. All programs are condensed into a compact block. Different program blocks are then shifted horizontally. Due to the differing height requirements of each space the linear shift creates cracks in between the program blocks. This dynamically creates terraces and overhangs that can be vegetated. This action is relocated across the entire mass creating an urban forest along the facade. This urban forest generates a lush atmosphere all along the exterior of the building.

Experiential Thresholds

Thresholds become experiential spaces that augment the traditional live/work programs programed with amenities such as retail, athletics, salons, cafes, and restaurants; the traditional boundary between commercial and residential zones expands and merges into these unique experiential thresholds. The ground level transition divides commercial and residential spaces with retail. Stretching many floors, this gradually blends the interior program with the streetscape and pulls the public deep into the building. As the commercial and residential spaces merge the threshold shrinks until it reappears out over 345 Hudson to the West. Wrapping dual height commercial spaces, these experiential thresholds culminate with a rooftop restaurant and bar with striking views north to City and across the Hudson. The residential zone extends a further two floors into a stunning full floor penthouse.

Zil Auto Showroom

Avtomobilnoe Moskovskoe Obshchestvo is a major Russian truck and heavy equipment manufacturer founded in 1916. AMO for short, they have been part of the Russian cultural fabric for almost a century and their production over the years have dealt with everything from passenger cars, bicycles, heavy trucks, limousines, and concept vehicles. Now branded as Zil, Today they produce two vehicles types at opposite ends of the spectrum 窶的nfrastructural trucks and presidential limos. Even though their heritage as a company runs deep, they have fallen out popularity with the public due to the lack of products available for the average citizen. Looking to once again become attractive, Zil wants remind the public of their place in Russian culture with a museum dedicated to their vast collection of vehicles. One kilometer away from the expansive Zil factory is our triangular site. As an existing park, it sits by itself as a lone block which is rare for the area. An eight lane highway connecting the second and third ring roads of Moscow defines the eastern narrow tip, while typical Russian residential blocks outline the other three extents. We chose to define our architecture by these conditions.

To rejuvenate the park instead of replace and to provide access from the across the highway we extended the edges of the triangle which meet and form another smaller triangle across the highway. This would serve REAR EXIT +32' 2" as our foothold across the road. Treating the park PARK EDGE +26' 10" and this new entrance area as a single surface, we pulled up on the edges meeting the road to activate them both. In one move the park is pulled up so as to be at eye level with the residential towers becoming FRONT PLAZA LEVEL a billboard for the communal activity from the area. Now sloped to the west, the park is sheltered from the highway creating areas to sit, perform, socialize, and take in views generated from its new height. This single move of lifting the park also creates an urban landmark along the road. We again treated the architecture as a surface and peeled it down out of the park surface generating a hovering mass that cantilevers 200 feet above a plaza below. This plaza serves as a pedestrian attractor and landing pad for people coming from the east.

Slipping Under

Access to this plaza from our foothold across the highway is accomplished by slipping under the road and from here one can continue up uninterrupted through a tube that has been carved out into the hovering museum or beyond to the park. This tube vertically ties all horizontal park, museum, plaza, and underground surfaces together. Upon entering from the tube, the museum operates much in the same way that the park does. All of the displays are on a single surface that starts underground at minus 15 feet with the trucks and slopes up to + 35’ for the limos. This surface undulates allowing visitors to move about cars in their own organic and unhurried way. Small bifurcations in the surface also allow vehicles to rise above visitors so that viewers may see them as objects floating inbetween the surfaces just as they are.

Two Structural Concepts

In order to realize such dramatic surface undulations we designed two separate structural systems that would work in tandem. The entire museum is housed in a 200’ cantilevered truss with a 400’ backspan. To the west, we used a web of arches to lift the park up while creating the space necessary for parking and services underneath. Both systems share the same 50’ grid spacing.

Gowanus Canal Worker Housing

Creating housing for undocumented workers forces architecture to deal with the fact that these workers operate behind the scenes, in the back of the house, and mostly unbeknownst to patrons. How can this housing model be most efficient while working to improve this lifestyle? With a new housing system of micro units that operate similar to individual dorms ranging in size from 150-250 sqft, workers will be able to live alone, a sought after commodity of modern American culture. This dovetailed with an active program that seeks to empower these people with skills will foster a radical shift in existence. Early in the design process it was decided that stone would make up the primary building material. I studied

A site filling boulder is eroded away by the forces of the canal and urban infrastructure. This eroded mass is then carved out by the continuation of 2nd Avenue and a This erosion pulls the building back from the banks to define landscaped areas for new road peeling off of 3rd street. This changes the circulation paths of the site, users and the public along the canal. mainly the one from the Smith and 9th subway stop to whole foods, to pass directly through the site.

Site Understanding

The Gowanas canal site is actually three different ones. They are bisected by the canal into three banks. The Canal was carved from swamp and used as a thoroughfare for the industries that lined it. Unfortunately, this was short lived as barge transit was torpedoed by the automobile in the ‘50s and ‘60s and the canal succumbed to heavy pollution. Today, two major factors operate on the site: one of growth and one of decay. Decay can be seen all over. Adjacent buildings are abandoned or house industry that does little to soften visual pollution. Crumbling walls and overgrowth is the norm. The canal is currently so polluted that it is not advisable to even touch the water. Like blades of grass growing through broken glass, growth is another force on the site and is moving to take the upper hand. Reacting to the toxic levels in the canal, it has been declared a super fund site. Pollution levels have started to decrease and wildlife has started to come back. Bicycle circulation has surged in Gowanus with defined bike lanes. Creatives have started to occupy spaces throughout the site transforming the area into a hip destination with an influx of venues, shops, galleries, studios, and cultural outposts. Park Slope and Cobble Hill, the highly developed residential neighborhoods to the west and east of Gowanus, have slowly been trickling past their border lines into the site. Whole Foods, a supermarket with an emphasis on local and organic food, will split the difference of these two and move into Gowanus. The MTA will also finish its renovation of the Smith and 9th subway station this year which will bring accessibly to the area to all of New Yorkers.

Connections / Interactions / Empowerment

The neighborhood is literally pulled through the building making their connection with housing for the undocumented. This is the most important opportunity for the building to effect change on the site, public, and the user. Internally, public spaces are mechanically quarried out of the solid rock, removed, and replaced with glass creating an abrupt mark of change along the form. This creates internal patios that are completely open to the ground or to the sky as well as decks at the façade. The ground floors will house workshops and educational class rooms where the tenants will interact with members of the community. Undocumented workers will be exposed to the variety of crafts that are finding new homes in the area ad have an opportunity to teach others their new skills. Using a form of surface erosion called “honeycomb” as precedent, The vertical walls and a triangulated superstructure are superimposed on the façade and the areas in between are eroded away to show different layers of substrate in tension over surface area of the façade. Over the units, the stone is honed and perforated allowing permeability to light and air.

Span Twist House Portland State University / A. Whelton

Linear Domestic Living

A conceptual design for a house located in the west hills, 20 miles outside of Portland. Designed for an older couple interested in music and electronic car fabrication as well as spending time in nature. The sloped site which the couple purchased has two existing structures, and offers vast south views out at the horizon. The couple called for a program with guest bedrooms for older children who visit on holidays, work spaces for their hobbies, and a pool for swimming laps in the morning. Architecture of the house seeks to arrange program into a logical sequence of living. The house expresses this sequence by raising and spanning the two existing foundations. Interiors flow from rest, transition, eating, relaxing, creative, working, and landing spaces while harmonizing with nature. The holistic form’s response to slope, views, seasonal wind direction, and the path of the sun parallels with the sequence of living spaces.

Structure and Form

A steel lattice structure supports the twisting form of the house as it spans one anchor to the other. Inside, a curving timber form multi-tasks by dividing spaces as walls, while connecting them in the form of stairs. The exterior form of the house follows the path of the sun to maximize occupants’ access to natural light and controlled warmth. As per the couple’s desires, sustainable strategies were designed into the house at an early level. To prevent excessive heat gain, a shading strategy involving louver make up the south facade. These louvers closely follow the houses shape while extending and twisting to allow the desired amount of light without blocking views. Where more privacy is desired, the louvers twist and close to become the sheer facade of the house. The house’s curved plan collects northerly summer winds with the concave north facade to be used for passive ventilation. Southerly winter winds are deflected by the convex shape of the south facade.

Chair Design and Fabrication

The design evolved out of the desire to optimize a curved design. Fabrication is achieved using a single 2’ x 4’ sheet of half inch plywood that is CNC cut. Original design called for steel dowels of exact angles to be mitered as the joint between the triangulated panels. The final design opted for smaller wood triangles to slot into the larger panels. This created a stronger design that could be fully fabricated on the CNC Mill.

Docking Station Pratt Institute / J. Taras

Design and Fabrication

Design for wall mounted Ipod and Ipad docking station. Minimalism and blending materials and form seamlessly were key drivers in the design. The fabrication process required a series of steps that all had to be completed sequentially. A 1/8� inch sheet of white acrylic was scored on the backside with a CNC. At the same time a block of MDF was milled creating a mold that the acrylic could be thermoformed to. After the sheet was formed, both pieces were placed back on the CNC. Two holes were cut for the electronics and the sheet was cut to size. The MDF mold was then cut into a structural web so that it could be recycled as the frame of the charging station. Clear acrylic blocks were milled to holster the electronics in place and attached to the MDF structure. Internally LED lights were strung to illuminate the scored pattern and the clear acrylic holsters.

Moving into a new 1 bedroom apartment with a very small kitchen this past summer gave me the opportunity to combine my CNC skills and my interest in furniture design. I wanted something that would have a large work space, provide lots of storage, include bar seating, and be designed to transform the space.

Fabrication

Working in Rhino, I was able to separate my design into cut files using profiling and finishing operations on the CNC machine. The finishing operation allowed me to build the joints into the cut files creating perfect miters and slot joints. Once cut, assembly was very quick.

Acura Mood Wall Professional / Leeser Architecture

Future Car Interiors

Acura, A division of Honda Motors was having an internal competition amongst teams to envision the future of car interiors. One teamed paired with Leeser Architects to produce a mood wall utilizing CNC milled plywood structure, surfaced walnut and mahogany, thermoformed acrylic, motion sensored lights, carbon fiber wrapped HDU, laser cut alcantara, and 3d printed display pieces. I was responsible for selecting a team and the design, digital fabrication, and assembly of the final piece to be shipped to Japan.

Fabrication

The structural concept relied on a waffle frame made of CNC cut cabinet grade plywood. A grasshopper script was used to create the structural waffle based off the volume of the mood wall. For areas where the curvature of the alcantara was more severe, we used a tighter waffle frame made of lasercut hardboard. This structure housed rotating display case. Inside this case were two motors: one to drive rotating platforms displaying 3d prints and the other to drive a rotating prism with three CNC surfaced. There were to provide the user a different tactile experience while seated in the wall.
