1.0 Minor Projects Cellular replication is a theme that has been carried through my work. It explores the idead of a singular functional unit that works in unison with others to form a whole. My final design exhibits mass as below the ground and frame and infill above.

1.1 POINT, LINE AND PLANE In this project I wanted to focus on utilizing the same geometric shape in repetition. In essence this then created planes that were differentiable by how they were angulated. There was purposefully no order to line and points or nodes of intersection. I wanted to disregard the dominant characteristics of horizontality and linearity.

1.2 MASS I began my work for this theme by looking at what mass was exactly. Therefore I started to think about cells as a single unit that replicate and function together to create a larger unit as a whole.

1.3 FRAME AND INFILL I began this project with the understanding that frame is a primary structural element and that infill is used to enclose envelopes. However I wanted to challenge this notion by creating a frame with infill that did not necessarily adhere. Hence exposure to the elements affects the user’s experience.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS Western positioned pavilion away from the noise pollution of the freeway. It sits right on the waters edge where the topography results in an elevation of 8m for a span of 20m. Access via path however is still quite secluded amongst the denser foliage. The tide is a necessary consideration due to the penetration of the structure in the water. The water body on which the structure sits does not receive a large amount of traffic; no rowers or boats.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

Alexandra McRae, 2016, Drawing 4, Drawing, Melbourne.

Through sectional explorations i developed the idea of creating a structure that extended from the bank of the island into the river and finally below it. Using perspective sections I also developed my thematic exploration of cells and how their replication results in the formation of mass. In the second section you can see that circular spaces are representative of cellular units all functioning together in spatial puralism.

3.3 FINAL DESIGN MODEL There exists a gradation from public to private space through elevation and exposure to natural light. The transition from a clean modern public space represents the façade that people exhibit. The idea that you are penetrating more deeply into the cognitive of someone is mirrored by the gradual decline in natural light. Materiality also references this metaphor. In terms of construction, the use of refined concrete in upper levels is paired back by glass. The further down you progress, the more the concentration of aggregate there is. This creates a sense of rawness relative to a person’s true self.

The penetrating water deck is representative of secretes submerged below. Nestled in the bedrock. The dynamism and fluidity of the water body protects these secrets or rather the depths of the unconscious. The level below the water deck lacks natural light and comfort due to the

4.0 Reflection In retrospect I have realised that I should have been more concious as to what theme was being carried through my minor projects at the beginning of the semester. This would have made designing a conceptical easier. In addition i should have learnt how to use 3D modelling software at the beginning of the semester in order to create digital models to convey my conceptual ideas and structural designs. WW
