TIME SHARE DESIGNING FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION
A social interaction design created by Alex Milbourn at the University of Kansas in the Fall 2012 semester.
SPACE User interactive experience tabloids, 3D space Pages, how we interact with those spaces designtaxi.com
SURFACE Something has to hold your design Evolution of the phone — cell phone A lot of new surfaces in the future –Who will design the best one? – Ex: coffee tables – walls
DATA How we look at data Finding the most important piece of the puzzle and communicating it Huge stream of data we don’t know how to represent — Designing that can take in real time, have a life on its own Finding one thing that is consistent
MAPPING You have the data, you’ve made a call on what you are going to represent Projecting something is mapping also Interact with 3D spaces urbanscreen.com/motionographer.com
THIS IS A WAY >> PLATFORMS << Real time NOT linear Designing user experience

PLATFORM Internal launch pad Structure - surface/base The name of the “thing”
VISUAL FORM & MAPPING Turns into something you can see
SURFACE How are you looking at the data? -Windows, table, walls Where does this information live? How is the data represented?
INTERACTION How do people interact with the experience?
EMERSION:// activated, willingness to interact the things that arise through an experience

1 TRAVELSHARE TRAVEL SOCIAL NETWORKING DATABASE
STATEMENT Travel Share is a database that allows you to share information about cities you have been to and the things you have experienced in those cities. Users are able to connect with other people one on one and get their input based on their location.
BENEFIT DESCRIPTION Being able to see and hear real peoples experiences, advice, and pictures. Being able to connect with people who are close to you, have the same interests, and want to know the same things. Being able to share you experiences. You can see where other people are in the world from your area
LOCATION People can access the database on their phones, ipads, and computers. Large cities across the world will have this database Kiosks will be located around the cities where you can directly upload information
DESCRIPTION A travel social networking database that records your travel and uploads pictures to a database that keeps track of the attractions, lodging, and restaurant recommendations you want to share to others who are going to the same location or are seeking to go somewhere. While in the city you can look up who else is there from around where you live. You can chose to meet up with them, look more indepth at the information they have posted, and live chat with them to hear one on one their experiences. This application only covers large cities around the world like New York City, London, Rome, Tokyo, etc. While in a large city, like Rome, and on the database you see you need to go to the Colosseum, you can favorite that location, put in in your “favorites and go back to it later to get the directions. After visiting that location, you can then post a picture of it, and tag that location to your profile. After awhile your map on your profile will grow and people can see all of the places you have been. There are also kiosks around each city that you can go up to and directly share information and pictures. Your data will then be posted on a large screen for people to view when walking by. This screen is connected to your personal database so you can view at a later time. You can also design your own profile, collage your pictures, and add information about each one.

2 CONSUMING
SLEEP TRACKING STAGES OF SLEEP + FOOD CONSUMPTION BEFORE BED
STATEMENT Consuming Sleep is an interactive experiment that tracks your stages of sleep based on what you ate the night before, before you went to bed. The different kinds of food is also compared to your age, gender, and location.
STAGES OF SLEEP: Stage 1: A relatively light stage of sleeping, a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. The brain produces high amplitude theta waves, which are very slow brain waves. Last around 5-2 0minutes. Stage 2: Lasts approximately 20 minutes. The brain begins to produce burts of rapid, rhythmic brain wave activity known as sleep spindles. Stage 3: Deep, slow brain waves known as delta waves begin to emerge. Transitional period between light and deep sleep Stage 4: A deep sleep lasting around 30 minutes. Stage 5: Most dreaming and rapid eye movement occurs during this period- increased respiration rate and increased brain activity. During REM sleep the brain and other body systems become more active and muscles become more relaxed
Benefits Knowing what to eat before bed and what not to eat. Seeing how food effects people and their sleep differently
Description There are five stages of sleep that people go through throughout the night. The cycle repeats itself a series of times and food consumption before bed time can highly effect REM sleep and dreams This experiment tracks your stages of sleep based on your age, gender, and location compared to what you ate the night before. Through a series of lines, dots, movement, and steadiness, your stages of sleep are represented on a screen and are then compared to other peoples sleep cycle and what they ate.

Pictures ties everyone together Main thing – recommendations – benefits for people who come to the city Most recommended- no negative comments to go through Interactive wall or table- combine kiosk and wall MOCK IT UP idea that it can be on multiple surfaces Grid on photos- may make it more unified On a train or on a plane? – another surface idea “Pin” your spot – dots would come on slow, then speed up to fill the map
Locations of Kiosks/Walls: Airports Train Stations Visitor Centers Inside or Outside? A specific “building” for the kiosk itself in the main part of the city? —It becomes a voice for the city itself

TRAVEL SHARE Travel Share is an interactive platform that records & shares personal travel and puts it on a social networking site to help people connect & share experiences.
Users are able to share experiences & recommendations through pictures, posts, and pinning of locations for experienced and beginning travelers. Travelers are able to connect with the people around them all over the world

INTERACTION Sharing, Viewing & Pinning
Travel Share is unique because unlike any other travel website, users can share their experiences through personal pictures and positive recommendations right on the spot from wherever they are in the world. Users can access this site on their computers, iPads, and phones.
All travelers are connected through the site, but experienced travelers/community members have certain elements that are focused on their wants and needs, as well as beginning travelers. For example experienced people who frequent the city often have tabs that concise posts and pictures like concerts, flea markets, festivals, etc. New travelers have options like restaurants, lodging, transportation, attractions, etc to narrow their searches down. Everything you click on takes you to a new page with all the information you need. There is not an overload of information and recommendations. The idea of this site is that users only put the essential amount of information (text) so it is easy to run through, it is clean to look at, and it is all recommendations, not what you should not do and where you should not go. This interaction functions just like a normal website, it has easy upload buttons, simple text boxes, tabs that are easy to navigate through, and beautiful pictures to look at. Users can gain information according to their wants and needs through a click of a button. By customizing your profile, users can pick the stream of information they want to see and get the best results out of every vacation they take from this point forward.

REFLECTION
I was apprehensive about this project at the beginning because I have never created an interaction design experience from scratch. There is usually so much that goes into a project like rules and guidelines, previous projects are shown, and the ones that were done “the right way” are presented. This project had none of that which looking back was such a relief and made the project benefit so much more. The process had a lot of depth to it and contained many layers of thinking and mapping. I don’t think my project would have turned out the way it did without those elements. Looking back at my process, without it I would have been stuck with a one layer interaction that was boring and useless. I would not have been proud of it. Even without rules and guidelines (which is what I thought I needed for projects), I ended up loving this project and loving what I came up with. I made a video that I am proud to show and I have mapped out the data and platform in a way that is understandable, easy to use, and could potentially become a real site. It is believable, useful, and in my opinion designed well in a way that users would want to interact with it.
