a coexisting relationship with nature MASTER PLAN OF MONTGOMERY, TX After meeting with the citizens of Montgomery, me and a team of three others took on a research-based design initiative aimed to preserve ecology, create greenspace, and increase functionality within the town. Taking a geo-based design approach, we were able to thoroughly research oodplain vulnerability, ecological zones, impermeability, and land suitability to shape our design decisions. This data allowed us to cater to our overall design mission and the community’s needs. Designed by: Alex Pittman, Leslie Kippes, Riley Nystrom, Katie Urdiales Master plan rendered by: Leslie Kippes

LONESTAR PLAZA My role in this project was focused on designing a strong communitycentered urban greenspace for the city of Montgomery. Lonestar plaza aims to bring an urban element to a rapidly growing small town through the use of multiuse apartment buildings, an attractive commercial storefront, large community gathering space, and easy connectivity to downtown. The plaza is also accompanied by a nearby dogpark, something the community members expressed a need for.

HILLLSIDE PLAZA ARCHITECTURE QUAD

Designed & rendered by: Alex Pittman

DESIGN CONCEPT

Hillside plaza aims to connect the students and faculty of four iconic buildings on Texas A&M’s campus: the Langford Architecture building, Oceanography building, Academic building and Liberal Arts buildings. The “hillside” aspect of the project turns a relatively flat site into an area with privacy and a sense of mystery. As the user walks through the space, the landforms change with the paths, and create a new feeling in each section of the plaza. The hills create pedestals for several different sculptures, one towering above on the west, and one in a small water retention area in the southeast. Shade structures and small tree groves create several pockets of private areas for students to relax and study. This site provides visual interest from the ground, and above from the many classroom and office windows in the surrounding buildings.

WATERMILL PARK WHITE CREEK White creek is a small body of water running through Texas A&m’s west campus, and serves as an irrigation runoff collection for the nearby horticulture gardens. The intent of this project was to design an interactive park focused on water education. My design features several hydro-electric dams that educate about alternative sources of energy, and help power lights in the park. There are two observing decks on a dammed part of the river that creates a small lake. These spaces can be used for outdoor classrooms, or for just enjoying the view. An aqueduct system carries water runoff from the neighboring horticulture gardens, and educates students about historical uses of water. Rain barrels to the east of the site collect water for community garden beds, and water-loving willow trees create small private seating areas scattered around the park. GOALS • Learn to render site plans with Photoshop • Incorporate water education into design • Create secluded spaces throughout the site • Implement several hydroelectric dams • Collect rainwater for educational gardens Designed & rendered by: Alex Pittman

MARS GARDEN & HITCHCOCK MUNICIPAL COMPLEX

models MARS GARDEN This model built in my ďŹ rst year studio was a great opportunity for me to work with my hands and be able to sculpt the landscape in front of me. The project was based on the idea of creating a garden on Mars with unlimited resources. My intent was to create a natural, reective space that reminds me of hiking in the mountains. This project has taught me a lot about model making, and helped me learn about the scale of materials.

HITCHCOCK, TX MUNICIPAL COMPLEX In my second year design studio, me and a team of three others worked on this model for a project done in Hitchcock, Texas. This model was at a larger scale and taught me about the importance of learning to work on something like this with multiple people. This project was also an introduction to learning about 3D printing, and helped me expand my 3D modeling skills.
